Father God,

All knowing, all powerful, all merciful Father,

We come before you with heavy hearts for the sins, treachery and immoralities in our national life that have burst into our awareness this week.

Here we are in this fallen world, wanting to intercede for those who cannot pray, inwardly sorrowing over our own failures, and even yet trusting in Your promises of redemption for those who repent.

Forgive us, Father, for any of the ways over our lifetimes in which we have contributed to the shame that surrounds us this week. For placing liberalism before righteousness; for listening to pundits instead of leaning on Your Word; for indulging in entertainments and romance instead of Christian love; for compromising with the culture, for procrastinating about holiness in our conduct.

We firstly intercede for our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers who are suffering with the news of grave sexual sins and betrayal of holy vows by priests and bishops that have been brought to light. Help Your people to stay true to You, O God. Infill them with the strength to face the horror and pray for the victims, including all the innocent congregants, pastors and bishops who will be held to contempt for the sins of others. Help the faithful to bear up under sorrow and form a cleansed church from the ashes of disgrace. May every faithful Christian of every denomination pray in solidarity for the hearts of the Catholic faithful, accepting that the heathens, the heretics and the hedonists in every denomination have contributed to this loss of purity in society and in the priesthood, whether the priesthood of ordination or the priesthood of the spirit. For we are all called to minister to one another in the Body of Christ.

We remember the victims of sexual abuse in every walk of our national life, including those who have suffered from being overpowered in workplaces, schools, healthcare settings, families, by corrupt officials, and especially in church-related situations. We pray that the violators do repent and take their consequences bravely for the sake of the Lord; and that those who cannot or will not repent should be removed from society and the churches by Your Divine Will and Intervention. Stiffen the spines of those in authority to do what is right in Your eyes. Shatter and destroy the rationales, excuses and traps of the devil.

We lift up our President and all his administration for Your forbearance and correction, Lord. Our President has been credibly shown to have indulged in sexual sins that are a grave disappointment. We pray for his morale in this terrible week, that he will achieve peace through private repentance. You anointed this man; his life has prepared him to do battle and get dirty, fighting and building. Yet sin is sin. We lift up his First Lady, his daughters, sons, grandchildren and his former wives for solace and wisdom in this humiliation. Let them also repent and intercede, just as we must repent for the sake of our nation.

We lift up Robert Mueller, Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, Lanny Davis, Omarosa Newman, and the media for a deep cleansing of their intentions and responsibilities towards our Constitution and towards We the People, whose lives will be affected by their words and actions at this fork in the road. May their treacheries be truthfully exposed and Your justice served; and may they earnestly repent of their schemes and disgrace.

Let us each take a moment now to reflect how we may have sinned by commission or omission, and lead us now to Your desired repentance:

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight—that You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, that the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted to You.

Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise.

Father God, help us as intercessors to help You, as we struggle with this tide of discouraging news about the moral health of our nation. Teach us to pray as You would have us pray for ourselves and our fellow citizens, and especially for our families and churches.
