Where does a pastor get his authority?
Running Away From My Church Blog ^ | 1/7/2018 | Robert Messner

Posted on 01/07/2018 1:17:40 PM PST by tiredofallofit

But that chain of authority is often not so clear in the church world, especially amongst non-denominational evangelicals. If a man or woman steps up behind a pulpit and speaks to us authoritatively on matters of theology, why do we automatically accept this authority? Is it because we like what we hear? Or do we validate the authority because the pastor’s interpretation of the Bible jives with our own understanding? But who are we to even make that judgement? Why is our interpretation of the Bible any better than the person sitting next to us on the pew? And if we disagree with an aspect of the pastor’s views, do we have a right to question him? Or do we have to accept what he says because we have already consented to his authority?

>>I take it you've sold all of your stuff??<<

Stop obfuscating and answer the question asked. Where in Scripture does IS mean REPRESENTS? We'll get to your other questions later.

No. The issue is one of interpretation. Your religion interprets the passages of the Lord's Supper and John 6 literally.

Do you, and Roman Catholicism, apply a consistent interpretation to the other passages?

The answer is no as you won't answer. You, nor any other Roman Catholic, have cut off their hands or feet or cut out their eyes.

Rome does not practice a consistent means of interpretation.

“This is my body. The same word. The same reality.”

You really don’t understand Greek, do you? Nor hermeneutics. Nor figures of speech. Nor context.

“If the bread ‘represents’ the body of Christ, Whatever appeared in Mat 3:17 was not Christ, was not the son of God. Just a representation.”

And if your claim is true, the Apostles chowed down on Christ’s bloody flesh, tearing off pieces, followed by a cup of blood. My what a scene! Yet it is never recorded.

“Everything changed with Christ. This is My Body means this IS MY Body

OK. Now prove your claim, instead of merely asserting it with capital letters.

I'm still waiting on the pictures showing where he's cut off his hands, feet and cut out his eyes. Also confirmation he's sold everything and that he drinks water for eternal life....if, Roman Catholicism is consistent in its interpretation of Scripture.

I'm getting popcorn though as I know it will be a long, long, long wait.

Repeat a lie often enough, use men in costumes to deliver the message, make it a ritual, and you produce men with no need to understand how to study the Scriptures.

You better make long-term plans to wait.

Well, lets start with the meaning of the word 'is'.

You REALLY want to go down the road of defining what words mean; in CONTEXT?

Matthew 23:33

"You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?

I know the answer. It is exactly the same is. This is my son. This is my body. The same word. The same reality.

Do you 'know' THIS answer?

Why didn't Jesus tell Thomas (the doubting guy) to lick his fingers after he had placed them into the holes in Christ's hands?

Surely that would have been MUCH efficacious than waiting around for some wine later on.

...if their understanding of John 6 is correct...

Let's give them the benefit of the doubt.

Then they'd SURELY respect and believe what Jesus said in verses 28-29; RIGHT??

John 6:25-40

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

And if your claim is true, the Apostles chowed down on Christ’s bloody flesh, tearing off pieces, followed by a cup of blood.

And; after Thomas doubted no more; Jesus was NOT recorded as saying, "Check out my back; Dudes.

You'll probably find some nice jerky back there by now!"

I was curious once, about what it was that pleased God that we did.

So I searched through Scripture and found this.

THIS is what pleases or delights God......

ACTIONS TOWARDS GOD

1. Faith towards God. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hebrews 11:5,6 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

2. Abstaining from sexual immorality. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

3. Growing in the knowledge of God. . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .

Colossians 1:9,10 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

4. Being strengthened with might. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Colossians 1:9-12 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

5. Patience, long-suffering with joy. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

6. Prayers of the upright. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Proverbs 15:8 The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him.

7. Fearing God and hoping for His mercy. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Psalm 147:10-11 His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the legs of a man, but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

8. Being fruitful in every good work. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Colossians 1:10 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

9. To walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.............

Colossians 1:9-10 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the, Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

10. Giving thanks to God in all things. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Psalms 69:30-31 I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs.

11. Praising the name of God. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Psalms 69:30-31 I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs

12. Obeying the voice of the Lord. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

13. To love God. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

14. For God to save people through the folly of preaching ….............

1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.

15. To reveal His Son to man ….........................

Galatians 1:15-17 But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.

16. For the fullness of God to dwell in bodily form in Jesus and reconcile all things to Himself…...........

Colossians 1:18-20 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

17. Delights to prosper us..............................

Deuteronomy 30:9 The Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your cattle and in the fruit of your ground. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers,

18. He delights in truth in the inward being ….....................

Psalm 51:6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

19. A man whose ways are blameless.........................

Proverbs 11:20 Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the Lord, but those of blameless ways are his delight.

20. Jesus.............

Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.

21. The man that understands and knows God............................

Jeremiah 9:23-24 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

22. In steadfast love …...............................

Micah 7:18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.

Actions towards others

1. Blessing Israel. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Numbers 24:1 When Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not go, as at other times, to look for omens, but set his face toward the wilderness.

2. Children being obedient to parents. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

3. Being honest in business. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Proverbs 11:1 A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight.

4. Praying for those in authority. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

1 Timothy 2:1-4 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

5. Sacrificial Giving and sharing. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

2 Corinthians 9:7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Philippians 4:18 I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God.

6. Doing good. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

7. Being complete in every good work. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Hebrews 13:20-21 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

8. Those who act faithfully …..................

Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.

9. Righteous lips …................

Proverbs 16:13 Righteous lips are the delight of a king, and he loves him who speaks what is right.

10. A submissive wife winning her husband by her chaste conduct with fear. . . . . . . .

1 Peter 3:1 6 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear-but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

This is the only thing in scripture described as being very precious in God's sight.

11. Make return to parents …...................

1 Timothy 5:4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
