Trump nominates Callista Gingrich as US ambassador to Vatican

President makes pick as he leaves for first foreign trip, including Rome.

Before leaving on his first international trip as president, which will include a visit to Pope Francis at the Vatican, Donald J. Trump announced the appointment of Callista Gingrich as U.S. ambassador to the Holy See.

The announcement was made as one of several other appointments to the Trump Administration. The choice has long been rumored. Gingrich’s husband, Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House of Representatives, confirmed early on in the new administration that his wife was being considered.

The actual title of the position, according to the White House website, is “Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Holy See.” The announcement says that Gingrich has been the President and CEO of Gingrich Productions, “a multimedia production and consulting company in Arlington, Virginia, since 2007.” In that position, she has produced a number of documentaries, including one about Pope John Paul II.

The announcement also notes that Gingrich is the author of “the New York Times bestselling Ellis the Elephant children’s series and co-author of Rediscovering God in America. Ms. Gingrich also produces and hosts historical and public policy documentary films. She served as a congressional aide in the U.S. House of Representatives and is President of The Gingrich Foundation, which supports charitable causes. Ms. Gingrich has sung for two decades with the Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. She earned a BA cum laude from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.”

CBS News noted that Gingrich worked for the House Committee on Agriculture as chief clerk until 2007. “She was a key figure in her husband’s 2012 bid for the Republican nomination,” it says.

The position requires Senate confirmation.

"Be even better if we had a practicing Catholic as Pope."

Exactly so!

I was hoping Newt would become Trump’s Chief of Staff after Priebus is fired.

If he keeps practicing he may get there one day.

However, it is inaccurate to assert that CG is not a practicing Catholic.

She is living in a state of adultery. A mortal sin.

Or at least someone who was not an adulteress.

Maybe she has repented her sin; that's why the Church offers the Sacrament of Penance.

While I understand peoples’ concern about this pick, I believe that the necessary canonical legal hoops were jumped through for Callista and Newt to be married in the Catholic Church. Again, I am not defending this pick for US Ambassador to the Vatican, but I am 95% sure Callista and Newt are validly married in the eyes of the Catholic Church.

You need to go watch his interview from this morning. Newt said it is the Clinton’s with the Russians...Also Newt wants to know why the murder of Seth has not been investigated...You are on the wrong site...

Callista and Newt have reconciled with their past and on the terms of the Roman Catholic Church.

Confessions have been made, penances imposed and annulment of Newt’s past civil marriage has been rendered, which is a time consuming process by the Tribunal, seldom anything short of an ordeal.

Callista faithfully sings in the Mass choir at the Basilica of the National Shrine on a regular basis, televised frequently. One could assume Newt is among the hundreds of faithful gathered there.

I wish them the same as I would for myself. Salvation and joy. They are together a devoted couple to one another and to the Church.

A far as I’ve been able to determine from the press coverage, Callista and Newt are both practicing Catholics united in Catholic matrimony.

They lived in flagrant adultery “back when,” but apparently a serious and sincere process of repentance and confession; and the formal annulment of prior null unions has got them to a place of lawful honorable wedlock. They now live straight and in the Sacraments. I hope we’re all OK with that.

Why do you say this? Newt was a widower (if I have my facts straight.) Also, I know you have heard of annulments.

Yes, she is. Remember, Newt is a convert to Catholicism.

So you're saying...she's not a Methodist.
