A group of San Francisco Catholics threw a Hail Mary Thursday, asking Pope Francis to fire their archbishop. Among those calling for a replacement of Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone is the father of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
Tom Brady Sr. joined about 100 other Bay Area Catholics in signing a full-page advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle Thursday, in which they ask Pope Francis to remove Cordileone as archbishop because of what they say is an atmosphere of division and intolerance in the archdiocese.
Holy Father, the ad reads, please provide us with a leader true to our values and your namesake.
Cordileone has been under assault from some Catholics since news broke in February that teachers in archdiocesan-run schools would be required to sign a contract that states they accept the Churchs teaching that all extra-marital sexual relationships are gravely evil and that these include adultery, masturbation, fornication, the viewing of pornography and homosexual relations.
Blowback was swift, with lawmakers, teachers, and now major donors voicing opposition.
But Cordileones supporters have stood by his decisions, noting that the clause is common in other dioceses and fully in line with Catholic teaching.

We have all been in that desert my FRiend, fake it til ya make it! Faith just like life has its dry times.
Chill! Some of us are slower learners then others. Some of us just did not like school. I am glad you were born so smart.
Any sin connected with sex is "grave matter," as the Church teaches, because it damages or even destroys the happiness and purposes of marriage: whether the sin is porn/masturbation, premarital sex, contraception, extramarital sex, or any other sexual offense.
"Grave matter" means "This Is Serious." And if you do it knowingly and with free consent, it's a mortal sin: yes, even masturbation.
Lack of knowledge that "this is serious" or lack of "free consent" would be mitigating factors which would mean the act isn't, in that case, a mortal sin; and lack of free consent might apply when the activity is deeply habitual or addictive. But the damage is still there: an incapacity to really bond with your spouse, an incapacity to be really satisfied with your spouse (because you've habituated yourself to other pleasures), an incapacity to be fruitful.
A lot of people in this society --- not only kids --- show incredulity or contempt toward the idea that sex is serious, and sacred. It is. But as my old Aunt Franzizka used to say, "Vee grow too soon oldt, und too late schmart."
Eight years ago I wanted all the riches in the world and was on my way. Made a killing in some trades accumulating hundreds of thousands of dollars, planned on getting rid of my girlfriend of SEVEN years to get a trophy wife. get the 350z, etc.
eight years later. I am broke. Sick. And the girl I wanted to get rid of has had to do things for me that no person should have to.
But she loves me so much. And so does my cat.
If I had achieved great wealth I might have been found dead in a suite in Las Vegas with four hookers, a ton of booze, and maybe some Xanax.
Life and God work in strange ways.
Thank you. My body is damaged in many ways. But I can still walk and talk. There is always hope.
They see PopeFrank waver and make public statements in favor of gays, so they attempt to push him in their direction....however, God has firm control of His church and will not allow it. The Church is God’s, not theirs. They are fools.
Thanks for the touching response. She IS great. And anyone touches my cat and they will RUE THE DAY they were born!! :)
Brain injury is a weird thing. You take two steps forward and three steps back. But tonight I begin reading the bible to understand this crazy world.
I didnt even know thee was a book called Numbers!
perhaps you knew it as Arithmoi, its Greek name...think arithmetic...
I can do the Rosary in Latin now.
Pax Jesu Christi sit semper tecum, et continua opus bonum tuum...
I knew a now deceased good and holy priest. He was a late vocation who did not seek the priesthood until his wife had died. During his marriage, he had a severe problem with alcohol while in the military. He would let himself into the Catholic chapel on the base, and prostrate himself before the Holy Eucharist, praying to be delivered from his alcoholism. He spent another ten years in severe alcoholism before being delivered from it and entering the seminary. He thanked God for delaying the granting of his initial request because it paved the way for a ministry working with Mother Teresa helping drug addicts and alcoholics back to God.
You are a child of God. He has given you the Mass and the sacraments as avenues of graces to lead you to eternal life with Him. That is a lot to get excited over. Get a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church published under John Paul II in the 1980s and study the meaning of the Mass. We Catholics all too often take the truths of the Faith for granted but do not really know what we think we know.
Pray the rosary reverently and remember to ask on the first three Hail Marys for Faith, Hope and Charity respectively. Also ask God for a closer relationship with Him and a to give you the grace of greater submission to His will.
We just finished Holy Week. Considering the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in His agony in the garden, His being scourged at the pillar, His being crowned with thorns, His carrying His cross and His being crucified all in reparation for my sins, your sins and the sins of everyone else, can we be other than excited to attend Mass?
Thank you for the beautifully written words. The biggest problem I have is since my head injury, and even before to tell the truth. I’ve had severe anxiety and many OCDs. It makes it so hard to concentrate. I twitch and hyperventilate so much that I can barely watch a tv show and be able to follow it. How do I get calm enough to pray?
How do you get calm enough to pray?
Try the Adoration Chapel for 15 minutes at first and then leave.
As you feel your body calming down in the presence of the Lord, lengthen the time by five minutes. And then leave.
Slowly you will be amazed that you are staying and praying for a whole hour.
Remember that Christ knows your condition. You don’t need to use a lot of words.....just be still and then you will find a few words to say.
Trust in the Blessed Sacrament.
Are you able to concentrate enough to read? If so, get a copy of Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis, a medieval monk and hermit. It is always in print. Four Sections: Interior Conversation, Spiritual Warfare, the Mass, the Sacraments. It was written at least 700 years ago and is one of the best selling religious books ever. It is a small book, about 3 and 1/2" by 5" and it is recommended that you read only about two or three pages a day and then think about what you have read. There are about 300 pages in all. There is no hurry. It beats death in a Vegas hotel room under soul killing circumstances.
I may not be in touch until Wednesday because of medical activity including dialysis. Pray for me as I pray for you.
May God bless you and keep you. May He hold you in the palm of His healing hands. May the Christians here pray to Him on your behalf and may He touch you as He has touched so many of us here. God Bless you and yours.
I shall investigate this book!! Thank you for your kind words. Sorry you have to get dialysis. It is 2015! is there any other treatment on the horizon. It’s funny. Men are so proud, but they have conquered so little and think they’re gods. I will say prayers for you right now. God bless you.
