An evangelical Christian who said he was forced to retire from his job as a general laborer at Consol Energy/Consolidation Coal Co.'s mining operations in Mannington, West Virginia, for his religious beliefs was awarded $150,000 in compensatory damages last Thursday by a federal jury.
Senior Judge Frederick P. Stamp Jr. is also expected to determine other compensation owed to the ex-employee, Beverly R. Butcher, at a later hearing, according to a report in The Exponent Telegram.
The U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit on behalf of Butcher against Consol Energy in September 2013 after the company refused to accommodate him when he told them that submitting to a newly installed biometric hand-scanner that tracks employees' time and attendance conflicted with his religious belief, according to Law 360.

I think the issue was that the company stored his biometric data. I could see many people, religious and agnostic alike having a problem with this.
The ones mentioned in the very first verse of Revelation.
Not sure about that. But anyone who takes a hard look at what the social security number has become must at the very least be concerned that it could be the mark. And knowing the consequences of accepting it why would you chance perdition?
You mean people who eschewed paying taxes while still remaining in the purview of the benefits system?
maybe you should read your Bible before you go all over this guy. Start in Revelation.
I mean, with regard to this thread, what was the historical mark of the beast?
I’m not challenging you. I’m just curious.
So the whole concept that a business must make “reasonable accommodations” is not on your radar? Why couldn’t the company issue him a badge instead?
If we begin at the first verse, instead of skipping ahead to “the good stuff” and trying to fit the Revelation of Jesus Christ into the current headlines, we won’t be misled by those who are always on the look-out for the mark of the beast. Whether we know what it was or not, we can’t be led astray if we stay with the Scriptures.
We use our badges, just place the back of our badge in front of the reader and click door opens.
As I understand it, we are going to be raptured out of here before anything bad happens. I have heard preachers say that you don't even have to read the book of revelations. So why worry about it?
Well, it is true that Title 42, United States Code, Section 666 pretty much requires all Americans to get a social security number.
And, as a practical matter, you can’t work without a SSN, and if you can’t work, you can’t buy anything unless you’re on welfare, which also requires a SSN.
A request by IT security is hardly the same thing as a random government agency coming in nefariously.
I work in IT for a state agency. We have connections to hospitals because that’s the nature of things these days. Hospitals have connections and computers in our state facilities that we’re not allowed to touch. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
Won’t God forgive us if we are worshiping Satan when he is cast out?
“That is why the strong opposition to the use of the biometric scanner. “
What is the objection?
“I think the issue was that the company stored his biometric data. I could see many people, religious and agnostic alike having a problem with this. “
Finger prints. Photographs. WTF!
“So the whole concept that a business must make reasonable accommodations is not on your radar? Why couldnt the company issue him a badge instead?”
They offered him the option of using his left hand but he quit instead.
Changing the location of the insertion is not an accommodation.
If God doesn’t exist, you’re right.
But if God exists there’s a very good chance the book of Revelation is accurate. In this scenario, doubters are truly the ones who are absolutely nuts.
So you see, it depends on which premise you start with.
without a surgically embedded microchip of some sort there should be no problem...retina scans, fingerprint recognition...no big deal. Even facial recognition technology is not a violation....go to work or quit the job, don't expect the world to comply with your every need.
