Is Prayer/Veneration/Worship to Mary Biblical?
self | 12-14-14 | ealgeone

The reason for this article is to determine if the worship/veneration given to Mary by the catholic church is justified from a Biblical perspective. This will be evaluated using the Biblical standard and not man’s standard.

This is true. As stated in Paragraph 2674 of the Catechism: “Jesus, the only mediator, is the way of our prayer.”

Then by what justification do you call Mary “Co-Redemtrix?”

there is also no mention of an organ, gas furnace, ciborium, stained glass windows, steeples, ....lots of things aren't mentioned....but there was an actual description of the sacraments such as the Eucharist (THIS IS MY BODY) and you concern yourself with a decorative piece of gold ornamentation....how very odd where your emphasis is...

How very odd, though typical, that you don't even know what the word "Eucharist" means! HINT...it is NOT "this is my body".

The Greek noun εὐχαριστία (eucharistia), meaning "thanksgiving", is not used in the New Testament as a name for the rite, however, the related verb is found in New Testament accounts of the Last Supper, including the earliest such account:

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me". (1 Corinthians 11:23-24)

The term "Eucharist" (thanksgiving) is that by which the rite is referred by the Didache (late 1st or early 2nd century), Ignatius of Antioch (who died between 98 and 117) and Justin Martyr (writing between 147 and 167http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucharist

From post 3795 for reference.

You are mistaken. We have always known, for instance, that such Old Testament men of faith as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and Elijah are in heaven, and they were not, precisely, members of the Catholic Church. They were not even, precisely, Christians, although we can truly say they believed in the One Who was coming: they believed in anticipation.

All of those individuals you note here are noted as being in Heaven due to FAITH. Not anticipation.

I do agree those listed above are in Heaven. However, the quotes from the popes came well after this. The popes said no one outside of the catholic church can be saved....all had to be subject to the pope.... and then they changed all of that.

Here it is again...

Pope Boniface VIII in his Bull Unam Sanctam issued in 1302:

"We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff."

You had a few quotes before this next part but this is the money quote of the thread so far....

This is not an avowing of Universalism on my part ---

I believe this to be an error --- but it is part of the Catholic belief that,

though we are bound by the Sacraments,

God is not bound by them.

WHOA.....STOP THE PRESSES!!!!

Are you making your own personal interpretation of beliefs without the aid of the church????

This can't be.

Catholics are not allowed to exercise independent thought per the church.

“I LOVE the Eucharist” A weak substitute for Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World. No sign of you ever saying I LOVE Jesus

The Eucharist IS Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world

OK, so it looks like you cannot say "I love Jesus" unless you do it through a symbol that you are told IS Jesus Christ

so sad that you don't understand that...I understand it perfectly well.

It's the icon of a false idol that you say you worship.

In Ex. 20:5 God said....."Thou shalt 'not bow down thyself to them' nor' serv'e them:.... for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God.

Catholic members kneeling and praying to mary of the catholic religion...not to Jesus as he requires of us

Cardinals and Bishops in union with the Pope of the catholic religion entrusting the world to Mary....not to Jesus Christ.

Crowned Idol of catholic Our Lady of Fatima carried in procession into St. Peter's square to be adored by the assembled crowd.

There is no end to the idol worship of the mary of the catholic religion

Pope prays to mary

I could not find in the Catechism where it says that none come to Jesus except through Mary. Rather, the Catechism teaches that it is only through the Holy Spirit that we can come to Jesus. Paragraph 2670 states: “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit. Every time we begin to pray to Jesus it is the Holy Spirit who draws us on the way of prayer by his prevenient grace.” Paragraph 2672 further states: “To be sure, there are as many paths of prayer as there are persons who pray, but it is the same Spirit acting in all and with all. It is in the communion of the Holy Spirit that Christian prayer is prayer in the Church.”

“The term “Eucharist” (thanksgiving) is that by which the rite is referred by the Didache (late 1st or early 2nd century)”

The best analysis I’ve ever seen about the Didache demonstrated it was a much earlier Jewish document that was edited to become a Christian document, then edited and updated over time. At this point, no one knows which changes happened at which point.

Now, just imagine if the Roman church took it upon itself to edit Scripture every time they added to their beliefs over the past millennia. Instead of just making up “traditions”, pretend they instead edited Scripture to support their changing beliefs.

You would have more information documenting the generic heritage of a labradoodle, than a document that was contaminated like that. This is the story of the Didache.

While it is interesting, it is not authoritative. Nor is dating possible, since there would be multiple dates as it was updated.

WHEN the Scriptures are given to you that prove sola Scriptura and sola fide

When was that?

The Holy Spirit speaks in all times THROUGH the Holy Spirit inspired Scriptures

No. John 14:26 did not add "THROUGH", etc. You made it up. That is the quality of all your proof-texts: traditions of men and wishful thinking of men and a few verses without context for a cover-up.

Duh. That is how usually mothers are in relation to their babies.

I aim to please:

Holy Mary, Queen of Heaven, pray for us and pray for Christian unity.

In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

"Mary is the intermediary through whom is distributed unto us this immense treasure of mercies gathered by God, for mercy and truth were created by Jesus Christ. Thus as no man goeth to the Father but by the Son, so no man goeth to Christ but by His Mother." (Vatican Website:  Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII on the Rosary, Octobri Mense, Pope Leo XIII, 1903-1914)

It's gotta be tough to be a catholic....there is sooooo much material you have to keep up with.

Being a Christian is easier....all you need is the Word.

2 Tim 3-4

Like in

But continue thou in those things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures, which can instruct thee to salvation, by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice, That the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work. (2 Tim 3:14-17)

This begins by reminding Timothy of the value of tradition, things that "have been committed to thee", presumably by St. Paul. It then explains that the Holy Scripture is inspired -- "all" of it, including the Deuterocanon that the Protestants decided to toss, no doubt, out of great love for the Scripture. The scripture can instruct, St. Paul continues, and is "profitable" in disputes and education; a priest cannot be perfect without the knowledge of it. All that is Catholic teaching. Anything I missed in "Tim 3-4"?

Paul and Timothy, teach us and pray for us.

What the Holy Spirit had written in scripture shows that the apostles were only to bind whatever already existed in heaven eternally

Where is that "written"? Chapter, verse? Please.

In Roman Catholic theology, the saints are in heaven. In the Bible, the saints are on earth

They are both on Earth and in Heaven. Same as with Paul, who also wrote "called to be saints" on many occasions. I ask living people to pray for me as well. However, "the continual prayer of a just man availeth much" (James 5:16), and those tend to be canonized saints of the Holy Catholic Church. Coincidence? I think not.
