VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis phoned the bereaved family of a U.S. journalist killed by Islamic State militants in Syria.
Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, said the pope phoned relatives of the late James Foley on Aug. 21 to console them for their loss and assure them of his prayers.

Pope calls family of US journalist James Foley and Obama goes Golfing
Shouldn’t the Pope call them by their own names? That is a confusing headline.
I’m sure the family appreciated the call. It has to be a nightmare for them.
Heartbroken for his parents. Will they get his body back from the savages?
WERE grateful.
I thought he didn't speak English?
Reading a few lines doesn't count.
That was very nice. I do think, despite some disagreements, he’s a kind man.
**According to NBC News, a Vatican spokesperson said Thursday that the Pope called Foleys family, who was grateful and moved by the gesture.**
This is typical Jesuit — caring about the little people in the world that are hurting.
God bless Pope Francis.
Like. Don’t care for this pope but this was a wonderfully decent gesture.
Wonderful gesture.
And he still hasn’t found the sixty seconds necessary to call Cardinal Wuerl and remind him that giving Communion to Nancy Pelosi is a mortal sin.
(And Dolan, Gomez, Chaput, O’Malley...)
I am thankful for the Pope’s compassion.
Ok, for the usual cynics and Catholic bashers, The Foleys were interviewed this morning on Today. The Pope spoke English to the parents (and talked about his own loss of family members) and spoke Spanish to one of the family’s in-laws.
I am not Catholic, and not very religious, but I think this is a very human gesture.
What was it that owe bama said to the parents?
