Q: My daughter stopped practicing her faith and was married to a protestant in his church. Now she has come back, and her protestant husband is preparing to become a Catholic too, next Easter. They understand that their marriage isn’t valid in the eyes of the Catholic Church, but the parish priest told them he can just “bless their marriage” and it will be all right. Can that possibly be true? –Eamon

In addition...why rely on the catechism when the Bible tells us we have forgiveness?

It sure seems the RCC likes to complicate and control the plain, simple, and clear teachings of the Word.

But you never know for sure that your sins are forgiven. In the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) we KNOW our sins are forgiven. God remembers them no more.

I don't think that's a good defense of the Sacrament... God forgives the sin as soon as the sinner repents... As Frank Sheed puts it in his Theology for Beginners:

"It is not for the sinner to decide how his sins shall be forgiven.

But the question is worth a longer look, for a profound principle is involved - God's plan of using men to convey His gifts to men. Life itself is from God, but He uses a human mother and father to give it to us. That, of course, is in the natural order. But it applies to the supernatural as well. His revelation normally comes to men through other men. The whole of our Sacramental life is lived within the community which He founded and which He and the Father and the Holy Spirit indwell. By our sins we damage the community, and weaken its power to do the work for which Jesus founded it. The Sacrament of Reconciliation undoes the damage and restores our relation with our fellow Christians. The men who feel so certain that they must go to God alone for forgiveness, would never know Christ lived, much less died for them, unless men had told them. It may have been living teachers if they belong to a teaching Church, or the long dead men who wrote the Bible (to say nothing of the living men who gave it to them and told them what it is).

Of the whole of God's revelation this is true; new birth in Baptism is given by God through man; so is Holy Communion (whatever the special value they attach to it). A reason, one imagines, for making this solitary exception of forgiveness of sin is that it involves confessing one's sins to a man, which naturally one dislikes."

He goes on to explain how Confession is a reversal of sin by which the soul bends itself to God's will rather than its own and that it puts our sins into the worst possible light.

Guess all these verses from the Word aren't sufficient....

Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Isaiah 43:25-26 "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more. Review the past for me, let us argue the matter together; state the case for your innocence.

Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace

Hebrews 10:17 Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."

Daniel 9:9 The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him;

Colossians 1:13-14 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Psalm 103:12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Numbers 14:19-21 In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now." The LORD replied, "I have forgiven them, as you asked. Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth,

Micah 7:18-19 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

Matthew 6:9-15 "This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ' For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Mark 11:25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins. "

Matthew 26:28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

>>The most important miracle of Jesus was that He made God change his mind.<<

God didn’t change His mind. Jesus is God after all.

>>Before Jesus, all sinners went to hell.<<

I’m thinking you have not done much of a study or any study at all of what the Hebrew and Greek words really meant that have been translated “hell”. Satan has done a good job at muddying the issue. Prior to the death and resurrection of Christ there was a “holding place” called Hades. The true translation or meaning of hades is “the unseen world”. Read Luke 16 for the account of the different divides in that “unseen world”. Abraham, Lazarus and the poor man were on one side and the rich man was on the torment side. Abraham, Lazarus, the poor man and all those faithful to God prior to Christ’s death were kept in that place because the ultimate, perfect sacrifice for man’s sin had not yet been made. When Christ died that price was paid and Jesus during those three days went to that “unseen world” to release those faithful to heaven.

>>With the exception of those(none) that committed no sin, we all went to hell..Noah, Moses, Soloman, etc...they all went to hell.<<

They went to that “unseen world” (hades) until the death and resurrection of Christ. Those who were not believers in God are still in the torment half of that place awaiting their judgment and will be sent to Gehanna (eternal torment) which has also been translated hell.

>>If our lives are the will of God, then why would there be a Judgement Day? If our lives are God's will, what are we to judged for?<<

We believers will not be “judged”. Jesus made us that promise.

John 5:24 "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

>>We do not fall because of God's will, and neither does the sparrow.<<

If God didn’t allow death it wouldn’t happen. God decides who He will keep alive and who He will allow to die or be killed.

Matthew 10:29 - Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

You can trust that God in His infinite knowledge will know what is best. Whether our sons live or die is in His hands and we must trust that whatever happens it is He who knows what is best. If we don’t have that trust we have nothing to hold on to.

>>We pray to Mary and to the saints and to the angels (for their intercession).<<

Jesus said to go to the Father in His name. He didn’t even tell us to pray to Him. In fact Jesus said He wouldn’t do anything for us but that the Father would because He knows our needs.

Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

John 16: 26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

If Jesus doesn’t even pray to the Father for us how would you expect those so called saint to. Jesus said to go directly to the Father. Don’t diss Jesus.

>> Where is the phrase/word combination "faith alone" used in the Bible explaining the concept of salvation via only faith?<<

Catholics can’t find it because the Holy Spirit switched words on them.

Rom. 3:28-30, "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one."

What, don’t like the plain language? It’s exactly what happened to probably thousands upon thousands of people who made confessions to priests who were later found to be pedophiles. What’s inappropriate is Catholics trying to gloss over or sugarcoat by using language that hides or clouds what is the truth. Catholics trying to play superior is getting really old and not just a little bit hypocritical.

>> Non-Catholic Abusers<<

Seriously? That’s your defense or whatever you think it is? They did it too? Most of us gave up that childish nonsense before kindergarten. I may remind you also that there is not confession to any of those so called “protestants” nor is their any pretense of “being able to forgive or not forgive” as there is with a priest in the Catholic religion. Sometimes Catholic responses are breathtaking.

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Galatians 3:1-14 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith—just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? .

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith

God promises in His word that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Are you really saying that God's word is not trustworthy?

Or that you don't trust God when He tells us that but you trust a man instead?

So you trust a man to absolve you of your sins, but don't trust God?

If you don't trust God enough that He forgives your sins like He said He would and does, then you don't have enough faith to be saved and you are in a world of hurt.
