A group of 26 Italian women - all claiming to be in affairs with priests - have written to Pope Francis pleading with him to end the Catholic Church's celibacy vow.
The women said that there were many more like them who were "living in silence."
"We love these men, they love us, and in most cases, despite all efforts to renounce it, one cannot manage to give up such a solid and beautiful bond," they wrote in a joint letter.
They added that "very little is known about the devastating suffering of a woman who is deeply in love with a priest".
The women met through Facebook, reports the Telegraph.
Some 6,000 former priests in Italy have left the church so they can marry.
Pope Francis, who had a girlfriend as a young man in Argentina, has previously said he favored maintaining celibacy, but claimed it was more church tradition than dogma.
People have it all backwards.
The Catholic Church does not forbid priests to marry. The Catholic Church chooses priests from among those who have chosen to be celibate and to be perfectly continent.
The primary point of celibacy is not the practical advantages, although they are real. The primary point is the person’s relationship with God. Choosing virginity is recommended by Christ Himself.
Are there unfaithful priests and religious? Of course. Are there mediocrities in the priesthood and religious life? Of course.
Evidently the Catholic Church believes that, regardless of the existence of failures and mediocrities, faithfulness to the words of Jesus is worthwhile.
Actually God says otherwise.
Both Jesus and Paul, in no uncertain terms, recommended celibacy for those who could bear it.
Please post the exact verses.
These women are not asking to defrock the alleged pervs. They are enablers who want to make it the rule.
They are hardly encouraging repent from the church but exempting it from it. This is like Hillary or Miss Edwards craving the soul selling to their pimp husband.
Jesus said no such thing. Paul did say (1 Corinthians 7) to young women it would be better to remain single and devote oneself to God, BUT, if the sexual desires were overwhelming, one should marry as a suitable outlet. Very few people have diminished sexual desire.
These women are the least interested in repent to God, let alone the priests’repent to God... but somekind of narcissistic feminist goddess complex of repent to her.
The beast had a head injury that disappeared and so did Hillary.
I prefer this one:
Oh I know. I was waiting for those who claim otherwise to fess up.
There is a spiritual intentional virginity while losing it physically in evidence. Christ merely pointed to the cynicism of the times.
Resurection is similarly an injury on the body transcended by the Holy Spirit.
The “I love science” mad rant by the gay character is talking about reconstructive surgery of loss of virginity of a gay man. It is a feel good repair. The spirit in him is still thrashing. Nacho tells him basically that it is done and unaffordable care. Repent, baptism and the spirit is the better brutal lot of theirs, forcing his head down the holy water bowl in somewhat humoristic way as the gay character cries for the treatment and torment of the soul eternal under the aegis of his blindness.
I’m not Catholic, so what they do on this issue is a matter of complete indifference to me.
But did somebody hold a gun to these men’s heads and force them to become priests? Did they not know what they were committing to?
You know, if I made a vow to God, I would be a little hesitant aboaut breaking it, even if I believed, as I do in this case, that God didn’t demand it of me.
I would be less so if I made a vow that God would seriously disapprove of like, say, killing someone for some wrong he did.
And what about the women? didn’t they know they were entering into a relationship with a priest?
So, whose responsibility is it that they are in a situation that they find intolerable? Theirs or the Church? I say theirs.
Finally, if a man finds that he cannot live with the obligations of the priesthood, why does he not leave it? This is a case of people wanting to have their cake and eaat it too. They do not have the moral courage to make a difficult decision.
All that said, my understanding is that celibacy is a tradition and not church Dogma, and I think they should change it.
But it’s not really my business. I’m not Catholic.
For something that is none of your business you sure write a long post!
More damning than the lack of celibacy of these priests, to my mind, is the fact they had to lie about it constantly — directly, or by omission.
The film is loosely based on a work of fiction. I doubt its accurate.
What’s your point?
I din’t say that it wasn’t interesting.
I did say that I thought the Church should let priests marry, but it’s not my church. I may think you should pay your debts, too, but you don’t owe me any money,
And you chose to read it.
##And you chose to read it.##
Don’t turn it back on me, I didn’t make the claim, you did.
So by your reasoning.... it would be best if all believers chose to enter the priesthood so they could devote 100% of their time to prayer or whatever.
And in doing so, end in one generation the Christian church on earth.
“So by your reasoning.... it would be best...”
You have failed to follow my reasoning, and are therefore incapable of extrapolating therefrom.
Just go away.
