A Catholic chaplain at MedStar Washington Hospital Center stopped delivering a 63-year-old heart attack patient Communion prayers and last rites after the man said he was gay, the patient said Wednesday, describing a dramatic bedside scene starting with him citing Pope Francis and ending with him swearing at the cleric.
Details of the exchange earlier this month between the Rev. Brian Coelho and retired travel agent Ronald Plishka couldnt be confirmed with the priest, who did not respond to a direct e-mail or to requests left with the hospital and the archdiocese. The archdiocese of Washington, for whom he works, declined to comment and said Coelho is not doing interviews. The bedside discussion was first reported Monday in the Washington Blade.

Who cares? This is insane. No one has a legal right to “last rights” from ANY chaplain. Its a RELIGIOUS rite, not a legal right. Its like saying he should be ordained a priest on his death bed.
Exactly!
If he is around to tell the story, he didn;t need last rites any way.
“If the man was not willing to admit his sexual preference was a sin”
His sexual preference is NOT the sin. Having sodomy with a member of the same sex, IS. I have a friend that I have ministered too for many years. He has a same sex attraction. His sexual preference would be the same. He has lived a life full of confusion, frustration, anxiety, depression, etc. But he has made his choice to remain CHASTE. Is he guilty of a mortal sin? Not according to the Catholic Catechism.
That notion that homosexuality is a purely private act went away when the SCOTUS legalized sodomy in 2003 in “Lawrence v. Texas.” Now homosexuality is in the public’s face 24/7 in the news, Hollywood, television, in our schools, and attacking our religions.
It’s all of our business; you libertarians don’t think much, it seems; it’s all freedom without contemplation of consequences on children or society as a whole.
If one does not believe in following the tenets of a religion (in this case, through confession and repentance of what is deemed a sin in the Catholic Church), why should he care whether the priest gives him last rites or not? Ah, I see, you want the benefits of the religion but don’t want to make the sacrifices required.
Should have asked for an Episcopalian for last rites.
Didn’t Jesus commit the ‘final forgiveness of sin’ on the cross? Never understood why there has to be a priest involved - in life in the confessional and in death via last rites. John 3:16 makes it pretty darn clear - anyone who believes is forgiven.
***swearing at the cleric***
He obviously missed the point here.
...”scene from Barak Obama and the search for the Holy Homosexual:....various peasants standing by a Inquisitor from Homeland Security. A priest is standing before them being accused of “actually functioning as a legitimate man of God”. Various taunts, accusations of intolerance...then one man shouts out..”He actually refused me last rights!” Then silence as the irony of the situation causes all to stare at the man so accusing. The man looks uncomfortable and shuffles his feet...”Well....I got Better!” he finally mumbles!
While this is true it is also completely off topic.
The discussion is about the laws of the Catholic Church and the attempts of a sodomite to attack that church.
Well said.
If this guy is disappointed by the priests reaction to unrepentant homosexuality, just wait until he talks to God about it.
Dude should have contacted a Unitarian “Priest” for the last rites, they are more in line with his way of thinking.
If he is still alive then point is moot.
Sounds to this Baptist that the Catholic priest behaved honorably. Why do people who reject Jesus Christ think Jesus Christ has to accept them?
According to Jesus: “Those who believe in the Son are not judged; but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they have not believed in God’s only Son.”
Unless he was making a confession how did the subject come up?
And did he declare that he was not sorry for enjoying a immoral lifestyle and state that he planned to return to it ASAP?
In which case what did he expect to happen?
These homosexuals want to portray themselves as victims. Their decadent, self-indulgent, perverted lifestyle is incompatible with everything that the church stands for.
He is not a Catholic. He just wants to attack the Catholic Church.
Well, he was un-repentant of his sin.
Repentance is pretty much a key thing here.
Be careful with your words. "Preference" is not sinful. Acting upon a disordered preference is a sin.
Sodomy is something real and tangible, homosexuality is just a name for a sort of lust for illicit things.
