Gay ‘married’ couple denied Communion in Rhode Island parish

WOONSOCKET, RI, August 13, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Two Rhode Island men were told by their priest that, because of their same-sex “marriage,” he could no longer give them Communion, according to local news reports.

Lew Pryeor and Pierre Laveillee were “married” in 2007 and have been parishioners at Sacred Heart for two years. Lew Pryeor and Pierre Laveillee

However, Fr. Brian Sistare at Sacred Heart Church has challenged the couple to conform to the Catholic Church’s teaching, which says that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

The subject reportedly arose during a meeting Pryeor had requested with Fr. Sistane on Monday. Both Pryeor and Laveillee told the media they were upset with the “new young priest” delivering homilies critical of Rhode Island Democratic Governor Lincoln Chaffee and the Democratic Party.

Fr. Sistane, who declined to comment to LifeSiteNews.com for this story, has been vocal in his criticisms of both for their support of abortion and same-sex “marriage.”

He recently wrote to Rhode Island's legislators criticizing same-sex “marriage.” In the letter, he wrote, “Marriage has always been understood as the union between one man and one woman. This is a 5,000 year old fact!”

He added, “I’m wondering what you will do when a mother comes to you and asks to be married to her son, or a cousin wants to marry her first cousin, or when a man wants to marry 2 or 3 women, or a human being wants to marry his animal?”

Pryeor complained the sermons are “pushing people away” and that Fr. Sistane “should not be a priest but he should be a politician.”

The criticisms hit close to home for Lew Pryeor on more than one front. He ran for the Rhode Island Senate as a Democrat in 2012 and was endorsed by Fight Back Rhode Island, a same-sex “marriage” advocacy group. Pryeor lost to incumbent Marc Cote, who has voted against both civil unions and same-sex “marriages.”

Pryeor has turned to his Facebook community for support, posting that he could not “get communion anymore” at Sacred Heart.

Laveillee and Pryeor have indicated they will be looking for a new parish to attend. Prior to Sacred Heart, Pryeor and Laveillee were active in area parishes, including St Eugene’s, St Mary’s, St Anthony’s, St John and James’s, and St Catherine’s.

His Facebook supporters have encouraged Pryeor to “fight” the priest’s decision in hopes that the negative publicity will pressure the church to back down and give communion to homosexuals who publicly flout its teachings on homosexuality.

One woman encouraged him, “Lew, if you challenge this Fr. Sistare, I'll bet you will be able to keep going to this same church AND receive communion!” She added, “that would make headlines!!!”

Others have provided recommendations of “gay friendly” Catholic churches in the area.

“There are several 'Roman' Catholic Churches in your area who would be happy to accept your family,” wrote a man. “I just don't want this to be a reflection of the Church as a whole, but rather one ignorant priest.”

LifeSiteNews.com contacted the Diocese of Providence for comment on the situation, but the diocese did not respond.

We need to show this courageous priest our support. He already deactivated his twitter after the homosexual lobby attacked him. It’s a shame our bishops are not as courageous.

“new young priest” is very good sign all around.

Donna Wuerl revoked the faculties of a visiting priest within his archdiocese who refused Holy Communion to a self-announced practicing buddhist, active lesbian at the lesbian’s mother’s Catholic funeral.

Any other questions like that; try Google.

Is Wuerl the bishop for Rhode Island? I fail to see the relevance.

Start your own article next time rather than hijacking this one because it gives credit to the Catholic Church.

“I just don't want this to be a reflection of the Church as a whole, but rather one ignorant priest.”

It's not the Priest who's ignorant in this scenario. Cafeteria Homosexual Catholics ....... demanding communion no less.

I sure hope the Priest stands firm.

The homosexual lobby will not be satisfied until their “lifestyle” is fully accepted by society and every sacred tradition and institution is defiled.

That has always been their plan. I've said for a very long time that "homosexual marriage" was less about having the same "rights" as heterosexual married couples, and more about tearing down the Church.

OH MY GOD!!. A Catholic priest who takes his vows seriously.
GOD made man and woman differently so that they could marry and procreate; that’s why it’s Adam & Eve, NOT Adam & Steve.

Sounds like a bunch of people who are ignorant of the teachings of the Catholic Church, and I can guarantee you that some of them ARE Catholic.

It amazes me how two people join a club (if one doesn’t think of it as a church) which clearly states the rules before joining and then whines and demands changes to the rules because it doesn’t match their beliefs.

Within the group, you subjugate your beliefs to the agreed-upon doctrine. If you can’t do this, YOU LEAVE. You don’t demand others conform to you.

That’s my whole problem with homosexuals, homosexual rights and homosexual marriage. They are unrepentant about their sin and, in fact, demand others not just tolerate but endorse their sin and then act shocked - SHOCKED - when traditional churches don’t capitulate to them.

Can you imagine if we had Adultery Pride marches and adulterers demanding their rights to have their partnerships recognized as moral and demand their be no condemnation, punishment or discrimination against them?

Most people would find that ridiculous but adultery and homosexuality (and fornication, I might add and even lust) are all the same sin in the eyes of God. We don’t have Adultery Pride marches. We don’t have Shack Up Pride marches. Yet we have Gay Pride marches where they arrogantly assert that their sin is not only not sinful but insist there be no condemnation of it within earshot of them.

If homosexuals humbled themselves and repented of their sin before God and the church, they would find forgiveness and acceptance as others saw their struggles to put Christ before their sinful desires. But they don’t. They demand their sin to be declared not sinful. They insist they are more moral than God and His Scripture doesn’t contain the moral authority to condemn their behavior.

Frankly, any church that does not instantly recognize and preach this should be condemned on the day of judgement. They chose man’s immorality over God’s perfect holiness.

I am, too, a sinner. But I don’t demand God change Himself to accommodate my sinfulness. I try to conform to the perfection God wants of me. Some days I do better than others but I don’t expect God to change for me - which is what the homosexual rights crowd appear to demand.

That sin is sinful and needs condemnation not accommodation - just in case anyone is unclear what I meant above.

If that had happened in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., Donna Cardinal Wuerl would have revoked the priest’s faculties to practice within Donna’s Archdiocese.

That's very disturbing. This is what I do not understand about Roman Catholicism. You have a CARDINAL who openly defies Church teaching, and disciplines priests for being orthodox.... and he's not disciplined or removed?
