I’d put up Ed Young (Second Baptist, Houston) against any, small or mega.
I’ve seen his son, Ed Young Jr. (Fellowship Church, Dallas) preach a time or two as well — and he also seems quite solid.
Mark Driscoll (Mars Hill, Seattle) is as doctrinally conservative as they come. Haven’t had the opportunity to see him preach — but his books are solid.

Amen.
And not just for a coming spiritual awakening, but for the coming persecution of the saints.
Sadly, when it occurs, a lot of these people will not know where to go, or how to do church in a basement........
Don’t be dissin’ Joel...
If only they were allowed to marry.
No one will ever match Adrian Rodgers.
It sounds like they were trying to model it after a conventional "building-based" church, (youth group?) which is probably why it didn't work. Home churches are a completely different breed and can't be forced into the conventional mold.
Mentioned in the full article at the link. Sad.
Ultimately, you can be sure that a faulty personal theology existed long before these affairs took place. It’s a heart issue, not a conduct issue, really.
Why are you associating Rick Warren with the Crystal Cathedral?
He has nothing to do with it. That’s Schuller’s gig.
I agree mostly but some churches like where I live due to growth have just grown exponentially
Not a true mega church
But 3/700-1000 services each Sunday
I know my preacher
Dove hunt with him....never a hint
He adores his wife who sadly is struggling with cancer
No big toys either but they do well with the children books she writes
I am more suspect of TV preachers and those ashamed to name their denomination
I actually heard that at my old church, when they were pushing their $90 million expansion.
I almost puked when the new auditorium opened. There was a water feature in the new foyer and escalators going up and down. Then inside, there were two HUGE hi def monitors. I felt I was at a sporting venue specifically for the Gold Coast of Chicago.
What put the knife in it for me, was when one of the pastors was to lead us in prayer, thanking GOD for the WONDERFUL auditorium HE gave us. I felt it was SOooooo phoney. I felt it was a "cathedral" to MAN'S accomplishments, not Gods.
IIRC I attended 2-3 more times before I left. The last time was when they had some special guest. They had easels up throughout, announcing this guys presence (and maybe lauding his book). They interviewed this guy for like 5 minutes and then encouraged everyone to get his book and have him autograph it in the bookstore. This guy had NOTHING to do with the message, he was just some pseudo celebrity, who was supposed to be a christian, to appease and wow the masses.
That's when I left, and never looked back, though I have many friends that still go there.
I've been to a smaller mega church a number of times, but can't get past the head pastor. He's got a radio show that goes coast to coast, which is fine. His preaching is good, if not REAL GOOD.
But TO ME he just exudes arrogance. They have created a mini denomination unto themselves.
More and more I feel the draw to go back to the church I grew up in. They have a new pastor, who has been there a year or 2, and every indication is he's a humble man, who doesn't take HIMSELF too seriously. I hear good things from there.
They are allowed to marry. these are Charismatic pastors of Name and Claim It Fame. They believe living by the spirit makes forth the issue that sins of their body make for them to be exempt. They take the meaning of the Corinthian Church as the Apostle paul wrote the letters to the church that was amassed in sin example sexual immorality. Pastors must be able to be an example, but the examples so far in the Charismatic churches are a whole lot to be desired, James bakker (woman), Jimmy Swaggart (woman), Roberts Liardon (man) and many others whom have been in sexual controversies.
I went to one of the Home churches....A Pastor left his church for belief it was becoming too worldly...too much friction with the other two Pastors on that matter.
I have to say his ‘ego’ was huge while I listened to him conduct a simple Bible Study.....and there were those who left with him who you could tell wanted someone to follow.
It was truly uncomfortable being there. I never went back.
Small churches and home churches have issues as well...but generally don’t make the press.
I had heard Billy went EVERYWHERE with another man or 2 with him, if his wife wasn’t with him. Just to avoid so much as being alone on an elevator alone with a woman, to avoid even the possible appearance of wrong.
As the 1st couple approaches Peter says “You can't come in. You loved money more than God; you even married a woman named Penny.”
The 2nd couple comes up and Peter says “You can't come in. You loved drinking more than God; you even married a woman named Brandy.”
As Peter looks at the last couple the husband says, “come on Fanny let's go, I'm pretty sure we're not getting in.”
“Give me a local fire-in-the-heart community church pastor anytime.”
Agree 100%.
But I think that so-called mega churches do serve a unique purpose that the local pastors/priests cannot easily do. For example, people flipping the TV channels in a hotel room may see/hear a life changing sermon, or maybe visiting someone for a time and a person will hear something meaningful to their life in a remote TV room.
God turns people’s lives around for His Glory at different times in different ways for special purposes.
Loved both their preaching.
Currently I like David Jeremiah, Charles Stanley and Michael Youssef. And when I hear them on the radio, I like Tony Evans and Erwin Lutzer.
The Crystal Cathedral is Roman Catholic. The Roman Catholic church wanted it at almost 60 million dollars and it fit their desire for grandiosity.
