NEWARK, NJ, September 27, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - On Tuesday Newark Archbishop John J. Myers released a pastoral letter calling on Catholics, especially Catholic politicians, who do not accept the teaching of the Church on marriage, to in all honesty and humility refrain from receiving Holy Communion. The Archbishop said that to continue to receive Holy Communion while so dissenting would be objectively dishonest.
The New Jersey prelate made a distinction between those struggling at times unsuccessfully against sin, and those who would willingly oppose Church teaching.
He said: there is a difference between trying to live the whole Gospel while repenting of failures along the way, and not even trying. Worse still is the attempt by some to alter or pervert the authentic teaching of the Church, which is the true teaching of Christ.
Archbishop Myers warned, Jesus had very harsh things to say to those whose false teachings led others, especially the young, astray.
The 16-page letter is a robust teaching on marriage and family which notes that divorce and contraception have paved the way for confusion in the Church and the world around homosexual marriage.

Pelosi will be pissed.
I guess that would knock out a lot of liberal democrats, like Nancy Pelosi.
Only if you consider as "harsh", being tossed into Gehenna where the fire is never quenched and the worm never dies.......and the Pelosi never shuts up.
I don’t think a priest can give communion without having first taken it himself. Wonder what pro-gay priests are going to do? Probably ignore this.
Same applies to all Christians, of course.
So much for One Universal and Apostolic Church.
Seems like the rules vary for each individual diocese anymore.
>>>Same applies to all Christians, of course.<<<
As an Evangelical, I agree, but I’d go a step farther. Those claiming to be “Christians”, who support same sex “marriage” and/or abortion should, after being given correction and an opportunity to repent, should be disfellowshipped/ex-communicated. No church member should even be allowed to eat with them.
When open sin is allowed to go unchecked in the church it spreads to others and misrepresents Christ and His church to the world. It also allows the “believer” to hold onto the eternally, tragically, false impression that he/she is “saved” and will spend eternity in Heaven, rather than in Hell.
Upon repentance (which is the goal or all church discipline) they would, of course, be joyfully welcomed back.
I guess that excludes all Catholics who vote for Democrats as the line in the sand is drawn very clean now. There is no ambiguity now.
Will this also apply to divorce?
No, just to remarrying afterwards.
Divorce is clearly commanded against in 1 Cor 7:10. Divorce is sin, unless for adultery as Christ said. However, the scripture never places the same condemnation upon approving divorce as it does with homosexuality. After condemning homosexuality in Romans 1, verse 32 speaks of the righteous judgement of God against those "approve of those who practice them."
Another Bishop with a spine! Thank you God!
Bingo.
Respectfully, no. Regarding such as the sanctity of Marriage, or the grave sin inherent in homosexual activity, these are truly universal. All must accept these teachings, or they are not Catholic. If you are perhaps making a reference to a difference in how faithfully these are followed by a particular diocese, that may be the case. But, to paraphrase your comment, no the rules do not vary for each individual diocese in these particular things. May I make a suggestion? If you visit the link to the original article, a pdf of the complete letter is there. It’s very well done, certainly worth your time.
This can be spun another way. Should a liberal politician continue to receive Holy Communion, their constituents should be notified that they are being lied to with regard to the politician’s commitment to the cause.
Golf clap to the archbishop ...
The problem is that Catholics support homosexual marriage by 58%.
Only 33% oppose it.
"I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. "So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith."
And Jesus says to divorce and remarry is to commit adultery. Not supposed to approve of adultery, or so I've heard. Approval is one of the ways you participate in others' sins.
Which is why speaking out is so important. Finally. This is the bishop’s job -— every bishop’s job. Every parent’s job. Every Christian’s job.
