The Not So Secret Rapture

Evangelical book catalogs promote books such as Planet Earth: The Final Chapter, The Great Escape, and the Left Behind series. Bumper stickers warn us that the vehicle’s occupants may disappear at any moment. It is clear that there is a preoccupation with the idea of a secret rapture. Perhaps this has become more pronounced recently due to the expectation of a new millennium and the fears regarding potential Y2K problems. Perhaps psychologically people are especially receptive to the idea of an imminent, secret rapture at the present time. Additionally, many Christians are not aware that any other position relative to the second coming of Jesus Christ exists. Even in Reformed circles there are numerous people reading these books. Many of these people are unaware that this viewpoint conflicts with Scripture and Reformed Theology.

And some more quotes from Ireneus "Against Heresies" (Book IV, Chapter 33)
.
Whosoever confesses that one God is the author of both Testaments, and diligently reads the Scriptures in company with the presbyters of the Church, is a true spiritual disciple; and he will rightly understand and interpret all that the prophets have declared respecting Christ and the liberty of the New Testament.

e shall also judge those who give rise to schisms, who are destitute of the love of God, and who look to their own special advantage rather than to the unity of the Church; and who for trifling reasons, or any kind of reason which occurs to them, cut in pieces and divide the great and glorious body of Christ, and so far as in them lies, [positively] destroy it—men who prate of peace while they give rise to war, and do in truth strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel. Matthew 23:24 or no reformation of so great importance can be effected by them, as will compensate for the mischief arising from their schism.

8. True knowledge is [that which consists in] the doctrine of the apostles, and the ancient constitution of the Church throughout all the world, and the distinctive manifestation of the body of Christ according to the successions of the bishops, by which they have handed down that Church which exists in every place, and has come even unto us, being guarded and preserved without any forging of Scriptures, by a very complete system of doctrine,.....

And some more quotes from Ireneus "Against Heresies" (Book V, Chapter 20)
.... But the path of those belonging to the Church circumscribes the whole world, as possessing the sure tradition from the apostles....And undoubtedly the preaching of the Church is true and steadfast, in which one and the same way of salvation is shown throughout the whole world. For to her is entrusted the light of God; and therefore the wisdom of God, by means of which she saves all men, is declared in [its] going forth; it utters [its voice] faithfully in the streets, is preached on the tops of the walls, and speaks continually in the gates of the city. Proverbs 1:20-21 For the Church preaches the truth everywhere, and she is the seven-branched candlestick which bears the light of Christ.

2. Those, therefore, who desert the preaching of the Church, call in question the knowledge of the holy presbyters, not taking into consideration of how much greater consequence is a religious man, even in a private station, than a blasphemous and impudent sophist. Now, such are all the heretics, and those who imagine that they have hit upon something more beyond the truth, so that by following those things already mentioned, proceeding on their way variously, inharmoniously, and foolishly, not keeping always to the same opinions with regard to the same things, as blind men are led by the blind, they shall deservedly fall into the ditch of ignorance lying in their path, ever seeking and never finding out the truth. 2 Timothy 3:7

It behooves us, therefore, to avoid their doctrines, and to take careful heed lest we suffer any injury from them; but to flee to the Church, and be brought up in her bosom, and be nourished with the Lord's Scriptures. For the Church has been planted as a garden (paradisus) in this world; therefore says the Spirit of God, You may freely eat from every tree of the garden, Genesis 2:16 that is, Eat from every Scripture of the Lord; but you shall not eat with an uplifted mind, nor touch any heretical discord.

Yes, just like your group’s bosses have their attempts to find a way around Christ’s directives. They can’t bear the light of Christ, so they try to pervert Christians away from Christ and Christ’s Church to your group’s bosses’ heresy.

Do they sit down and actually READ it? How do you know?

Here you got 3 on FR to tell you we do read the Bible and actually do READ it (we don't read a 14-page excerpted annoted version like what your group is handed out, we read the Bible)

And we celebrate The Word of God in the Mass, right from In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matt. 28:19) right up to People: Thanks be to God. (2 Cor 9:15)

>>Peter was made Christ’s Vicar on Earth (AKA Pope) when Jesus said what He said in Matthew 16:18. That is the siginificance to the RCC.<<

Utter blasphemy. The reference to the rock was back to Peter’s answer to who Jesus was. Jesus is the rock, the cornerstone. He was telling Peter that the Father in heaven had revealed to Peter who Jesus really was. The church is not built on Peter as the cornerstone.

Matthew 16:15-18

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Look at what Peter says about the Priesthood. The cornerstone is Jesus and all believers are building blocks of the spiritual house (the Church). We are all priests.

1 Peter 2: 3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

5Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Peter quotes Isaiah 28:16 and applies the Messianic stone reference to Jesus. Peter references vivid imagery from Isaiah. God placed Jesus as the chosen and valuable cornerstone.

This is the idea that Peter is giving to us by quoting Isaiah. Jesus is the perfect cornerstone upon which the spiritual house of God is built. We are the spiritual stones in this house. But we cannot be built just anywhere on this structure. We must be measured against the Living Stone to ensure that we are in line with it.

The RCC has corrupted the scripture.

"The two mentioned above are not infallible." -- Good catch imp!

if you want to convince a well-chatechized Catholic to convert to --> do note that metmom's group is not Protestant, it's not a Christian group like the Lutherans (LCMS, WELS, etc.) or Presbyterian or Anglican or Methodist or Baptist or Pentecostal. Her group's bosses's ideology is closer to the LDS with it's denial of Christ's divinity than to any Christian Protestant gruop.

We have a lot of good Christians among our Protestant brethern, but we have a number of fake non-Christian groups who pretend to be Protestants so they can foment discord between Catholics, Orthodox and real Protestants (Lutherans, Presbyterians, Baptists, Pentecostals, Methodists, Anglicans etc)

God has given every believer the Holy Spirit so that we have the power to choose to not sin. There is NO excuse for the kind of corruption and immorality and evil practiced by the majority of the popes the Catholic church has had.

Their behavior is not simply a matter of *Ooops, they're human. Every one slips once in a while.*

The Catholic church history is replete with vile evil perpetrated by the popes in the name of Christ. That is totally inexcusable.

Nobody is expecting perfection from a man, but anyone CAN expect far better from anyone who names the name of Christ than they have done.

Protestant televangelists are rightly condemned for immoral lifestyles which are no different in nature that Catholic clergy participate in and the Catholic clergy is routinely excused for even worse sin by Catholics every day.

That is just rank hypocrisy of the worst kind.

1 Peter 1:13-19 13Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." 17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

1 Peter 5:1-5 1 Peter 5 Shepherd the Flock of God 1So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

2 Peter 2 1But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8(for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.

Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord. 12 But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, 13suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. 14They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! 15Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, 16but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

17 These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. 18For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. 19They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22What the true proverb says has happened to them: "The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire."

LOL!!!

At long last, we have an outright, unmistakable denial of the word of God instead of the lame attempts at hiding their contempt for Scripture that we're usually treated to.

I must say, that's the first time I've seen Genesis 12:3 referred to as a "fallacy". The hideous, nauseating repugnance for the Bible is now out there for all to see. Including, of course, the One Who wrote those words.

Let’s also look at this whole notion of the rapture being only a recent belief.

Saint Irenaeus was an early church father and apologist, and his writings were formative in the early development of Christian theology. He was a hearer of Polycarp, who in turn was a disciple of John the Evangelist.

Irenaeus
Against Heresies
Book 5, Chapter 29, Paragraph 1

And therefore, when in the end the Church shall be suddenly caught up from this, it is said, “There shall be tribulation such as has not been since the beginning, neither shall be.” Matt. xxiv. 21. For this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome they are crowned with incorruption.

Pseudo-Ephraem's Pre Tribulation Rapture Statement (c. 374-627) A Sermon by Pseudo-Ephraem (section 2)

"All the saints and elect of God are gathered together before the tribulation, which is to come, and are taken to the Lord, in order that they may not see at any time the confusion which overwhelms the world because of our sins."

Trying to deny that the early church fathers didn’t believe in the rapture is an out and out lie.

“self-controlled”, “not quarrelsome” - I guess Jesus should have never made Peter the first pope since Peter was neither “self-controlled” or “not quarrelsome”./sarc

Well, he didn't make Peter the first pope. I guess He knew the character of man well enough to not establish that kind of absolute power and authority of one man over another.

Peter blows it time an again. That alone is evidence enough against claiming he was pope.

Papal infallibility — you, boatbums, should know, it’s been repeated to you again and again — it is purely on decisions of doctrine spoken ex-cathedra. It is NOT about a pope’s personal opinions or even discipline but on matters of strict dogma. It is also properly of Council and papacy — which is why the Councils like Nicea were infallible in their decisions on dogma

Show us the Scripture that supports that doctrine.

I haven't found the term *papal infallibility* in the Bible yet.

Or has it recently been added to yours?

Matthew 16:18-19
[18]And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [19] And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
As St. Peter, by divine revelation, here made a solemn profession of his faith of the divinity of Christ; so in recompense of this faith and profession, our Lord here declares to him the dignity to which he is pleased to raise him: viz., that he to whom he had already given the name of Peter, signifying a rock, "Upon this rock"... The words of Christ to Peter, spoken in the vulgar language of the Jews which our Lord made use of, were the same as if he had said in English, Thou art a Rock, and upon this rock I will build my church. So that, by the plain course of the words, Peter is here declared to be the rock, upon which the church was to be built: Christ himself being both the principal foundation and founder of the same. Where also note, that Christ, by building his house, that is, his church, upon a rock, has thereby secured it against all storms and floods, like the wise builder, St. Matt. 7. 24, 25.

1 Pet2:3-6
[3] If so be you have tasted that the Lord is sweet. [4] Unto whom coming, as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen and made honourable by God: [5] Be you also as living stones built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
yes, the holy priesthood of all believers. Just as Israel in the Old Covenant (which still holds) were a priestly people with ministerial priests (Levites and the house of Aaron), so too as we a royal, priestly nation with ministerial priests and lay priests.

Now under the nature of the body of Christ. Christians do not usurp or diminish the unique priesthood of Christ when they are referred to as priests; they participate in that unique priesthood. So intimate is the union of the baptized with Christ that Paul describes this mystical union as a body (1 Cor. 12:12–27; Rom. 12:5) with Christ as its head ( Eph. 1:22–23). What can be attributed to a hand in the body does not somehow take away from the head. The fact that Christians are priests does not usurp the priesthood of Christ because it is Christ who empowers them to participate in his own priesthood. Indeed, it is Christ (and his priesthood) living in them (cf. Gal. 2:20).

the English word priest is derived from the Greek word presbuteros, or "elder." It does not originate from hiereus. The German word priester also has its origin from the Greek word for "elder." So there is etymological reason to say that the elder in the Christian Church was considered to be a priest. In fact, the Douay-Rheims Bible translates presbuteros as "priest," which can be a valid translation (see James 5:14).

The New Covenant priesthood is the function of the apostle, bishop, and elder, which is clearly revealed to be of a priestly nature. (A deacon is ordained, but he is not a ministerial priest.)

I won’t argue with you about the “American Religion Big Box” problems but that doesn’t negate prophecy. History has shown that there is truth wrapped in all apostate teaching. Satan himself quoted scripture, that doesn’t make scripture wrong.

Then let’s also look at this whole notion of the rapture being only a recent belief.

As you can see metmom, Ireneus denounced heretical groups like yours. All of those that deny the divinity of Christ, call the OT God a yabboloath etc. are not Christians. It would be good to give up this false cult and become a Christian. There are many Protestant groups you can join like the Baptists or Pentecostals or Lutherans or others if you don’t want to join the One Holy Apostolic Catholic Church (Orthodox, Catholic, Oriental, Assyrian)
