Okay, I'll be honest, I am not a great follower of Glenn Beck yet I am trying to understand what exactly his message is. I try to understand by listening to what others have to say and by watching his shows and rallys.
Today on his show, Glenn said, "If you don't believe in giving 10% tithe, why are you going to that church?" I about had to pick my jaw off the floor. I was not aware attending church was about a 10% tithe and if you didn't have the funds, why attend?
In my minds eye, this is NOT how to attract people to church or to the word of God. God is about Love, Compassion and Unity. In these economic times people are barely able to care for their families let alone give 10% of their income to churches that havn't exactly set a very "spiritual" example.
I am not sure I enjoy where Glenn Beck is taking us.
Regarding the context of this thread, would that mean that I would give money to Caesar and my life to God?
No, Jesus was definitely talking about taxes and what is owed to the government and what is owed to God, but He sure wasn't very specific about when and amounts.
;)
You and I are on the same page, I think...
Um, is that what Mormonism teaches, ‘new testament law’? And give it a rest? Sorry, not in the face of false teaching.
Thanks
That's my prayer...
And your point? Listen, I just heard the Pecker Head Beck state on his radio show, that the problem with Catholics is that they believe liberation theology and in the same breath he said that liberation theology is marxist. He just called all Catholics marxists and he just lost listener today. I am a Roman Catholic and our Priest is a Patriot. How dare that pecker head, Beck, make such a stupid remark? F_ _ _ him, what a jerk off.
How can you call it "tithing privately" when your bishop will ask you if you pay an "honest tithe" when you apply for a "temple recommend"? And BTW, you can tithe "privately" at any Christian church by putting your tithe in an envelope, sealing it and dropping it in the plate or leaving it in the Pastor's office.
ALSO, Christian churches actually account for the money given....they will PUBLICLY show the income and expenses to members so that there is no "private" expenditure that the membership doesn't know about, unlike the mormon church.
I agree with you. Glenn has done some good things. Is he a leader? No.
Yet, temple attendance is mandatory for a mormon to reach exaltation. No "saving by grace" there.
An article on tithing for LDS.
Kenneth L. DuVall, The Significance of Tithing Settlement, Liahona, Dec. 2000, 40
Tithing is an important test of our personal righteousness. President Joseph F. Smith (18381918) said: By this principle it shall be known who is for the kingdom of God and who is against it.
By it it shall be known whether we are faithful or unfaithful (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: J http://library.lds.org/nxt/gateway.dll/Magazines/Liahona/2000.htm/liahona%20december%202000.htm/the%20significance%20of%20tithing%20settlement.htmoseph F. Smith [1998], 276).
The question is, to whom is our faithfulness to be known? First, we must be satisfied in our own hearts that we have paid an honest tithe. It is important that we have the confirmation of the Spirit in this matter.
It is also important that we declare our tithing faithfulness to our bishop or branch president. We are asked to make this declaration during tithing settlementan individual or family interview with the bishop or branch president during December each year. There are several important reasons why.
Declaration of tithing status. It is an eternal principle that we are accountable for what we have been given by God: our time, talents, and means. We know that we shall be judged out of those things which [are] written in the books, according to [our] works (Rev. 20:12; see also 3 Ne. 27:26). At the end of the year, the bishop or branch president is asked to indicate on the records of the Church the tithing status of each member in his unit. It is our privilege to exercise our accountability by declaring for him our own tithing status.
A time to show our obedience. Tithing settlement allows us the chance to demonstrate our obedience to the Lord. In addition, parents can use tithing settlement as a teaching tool. A family home evening would be a good time to talk about how the Church uses tithing and to help children prepare their own records for this meeting with the bishop. Children who hear their parents declare that they pay a full tithing gain the knowledge that paying tithing is important to their parents and should be important to the children as well.
An audit of our personal records. If we have not taken time to review our records of contributions to the Church, how do we know they are correct? A few years ago, at our year-end review of our contributions, my wife and I discovered that a check for tithing we thought we had written in July had never been given to the Church. We corrected that error immediately.
An audit of the Church records. Every April in general conference, the chairman of the Church Audit Committee stands and says that, based on a review of Church procedures and audit reports, the members of the audit committee are of the opinion that Church contributions received and expended during the [previous] year have been managed in accordance with revelation and established Church policies and procedures (The Church Audit Committee Report, Liahona, July 2000, 26). An important part of those audit procedures is to have us check whether our personal records match the Churchs records. We can check whether our contributions were properly distributed in the categories we selected on our donation slips.
Some people have wondered whether it is necessary to wait until the last day of the year to be sure all income is properly reported. The answer is no. The spirit of tithing settlement is just as easily served on 1 December as on the 31st. We can continue to pay donations after tithing settlement, and the ward clerk will prepare for our review and our personal financial records a final report of contributions as of 31 December.
A time for commitment. What if someone is not a full-tithe payer? What if someone hasnt paid any tithes or offerings? The interview with the bishop or branch president can be the beginning of repentance, a time to commit to begin or to do better. Everyone who commits to sacrifice as the Lord has commanded will receive spiritual strength and experience personal growth by keeping this resolve.
After commanding His people to pay tithes, the Lord promised to open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it (Mal. 3:10; see Mal. 3:812). Those who have seen the fulfillment of this promise can testify that the blessings are often more spiritual than financial. When the Lord opens the windows of heaven, He pours out blessings suited to His childrens individual needs.
I get accountability wasn't high on their list.
Read more carefully.
I did NOT say that you HADn't answered the call.
I read it as Judaizers!
Yes, he makes certain statements he could not if he were’t Christian....he does understand salvation ...clearly....but evidences some of the Mormon doctrines on occassion so they are impacting him none the less. Hopefully in time the true Christians who are working with him will help him see his error. I have faith that this will surely come about with time and tide.
Giving to the Lords work is an individual decision between the person and their maker. But it should never be required in order to gain admittance or denied admittance into any area of the church....certainly not something to be “paid up”.
God loves a cheerful giver...and he calls it giving. I know of an individual who saves their money to give to their Pastor each month..to meet the unexpected needs when their is no time for a board to meet. A seperate account records these donations now and many more give to these unexpected events where cash is needed asap. Is it a tithe? Yes one could call it that...otheres a donation....but it meets the unexpected and urgencies that do come up...God then meets these as they occur.
Or his own church leadership will tell him to change his procedure. Either way, a separation will have to occur at some point.
Yep....When Beck realizes the truth of Mormonism he’ll be out of there...I don’t think he would sacrifice his career for Mormonism....when he can certainly remain a Christian in good standing by leaving that fold.
But...as long as Glenn Beck helps the conservative cause, I will not bash him for his religion. Mitt Romney is an entirely different story, because he is not conservative, but a RINO.
