I just witnessed a couple of Orthodox posters get kicked off a "Catholic Caucus" thread. I thought, despite their differences, they had a mutual understanding that each sect was considered "Catholic". Are not the Orthodox considered Catholic? Why do the Romanists get to monopolize the term "Catholic"?
I consider myself to be Catholic being a part of the universal church of Christ. Why should one sect be able to use a universal concept to identify themselves in a caucus thread while other Christian denominations need to use specific qualifiers to identify themselves in a caucus thread?
The Institutes of the Christian Religion is not what I cited. I cited an even comparison of like to like, catechism to catechism.
It goes without saying that much more can still be written of Christ.
“Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.”
John 21:24-25
Post 2828 bump to the top.
Are you insulted when Christ tells you to repent?
Luke 13 1 Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus said to them, Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? 3 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
We tell everyone of the need to be obedient to God and to repent, I did not know Catholics, unlike the rest of mankind are above the need to repent before a Holy God..
I'm well aware of that.
The size of it would be too embarrassing....I mean, from the anti-scholarly point of view of mocking book length.
When I was at the Episcopalian Virginia Theological Seminary in the early 70’s the very Calvinist (”Neo-Orthodox”) Church History Prof said, with evident sincerity, that the Catholic Church had put the Bible on the “Index.”
No.
The insult is when followers of Calvin instruct followers of Christ to repent.
Did you catch that? Was it insulting to you?
If so, then now you understand.
But they sure have fun repeating the lie.
” I did not know Catholics, unlike the rest of mankind are above the need to repent before a Holy God”
Now that’s just silly.
What is it about Calvinism that inspires some to lie so vigorously about the Catholic Church?
They realize that they don't have truth on their side, so it's necessary to lie.
The lie about the Bible being banned has been repeated so many times and for so long that many anti-Catholics have actually convinced themselves that it's true.
13who were born, not of blood NOR THE WILL OF THE FLESH,NOR THE WILL OF MAN , BUT OF GOD. - John 1
How did they become children of God?Adopted into His family? BY HIS WILL
John 6:43Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus answered. 44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
This scripture is a general proclamation of the gospel to the unregenerate...they by definition have not yet been given a new heart or ears to hear the gospel and respond
Look who is not hearing
51 You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? - Acts 7
They resist the gospel because they can not hear it or understand it..
1 Corth 1 Corinthians 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
The "natural man "is spiritually dead..he needs to be born again by the spirit of God to have spiritual life..
Your extensive post did not respond to that ...
THX 4 THE BUMP UP
The only way the pope and I can be wrong on this is if there is more than one God. I think this is where I get to shout "Gin!".
There is only ONE YHvH He is the Elohim of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. If this pope as his predecessor believe that Allah,
shalom b'SHEM Yah'shua HaMashiach
the god of Mohammed is his god, then brother Benedict is lost as well.
Wait, are you claiming to be "another Christ?"
It sounds like this:
(1)Jesus called on people to repent; Is that the argument you are making?
(2)I call on you to repent; therefore
(3)My call for repentance is as authoritative as Jesus' call.
What does Jesus' call to repent have to do with a member of one group of Christians telling members of another group of Christians to repent?
I did not know Catholics, unlike the rest of mankind are above the need to repent before a Holy God..
I'm so glad to hear that, because one cannot know what isn't true -- at least in regular epistemology. If you claimed to know it, you'd be claiming the impossible.
But of course, the question to which you are responding is not about the need to repent but about the propriety of your telling us to repent.
In my experience on FR when a Calvinist instructs a Catholic to repent it follows a falsehood about what we believe and teach.
Maybe in some world-views it's meaningful to tell people repent for doing something they don't do, but in our universe it is, at the very best, inexplicable.
Repent.
;-)
“I mean, from the anti-scholarly point of view of mocking book length.”
Scathing commentary without foundation in fact or good faith demonstrates an understanding that the point has been made, and the thesis must be distorted in order to create a basis for disagreement.
So your answer is what? What makes someone hear the Gospel, repent and believe when the guy next door doesn’t?
God ordained Herod and Pontius Pilate for the most horrific act of men in all time..the crucification of His son
Acts 2:Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God,ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
John 19:Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."
My Bible says God is all goodness and there is no darkness in Him God is light, and there is no darkness in Him, (I John i, 5) I will show thee all good (Exod. xxxiii, 19). Far from God impiety, and iniquity from the Almighty (Job xxxiv, 10).
So do you believe that God is helpless against evil, that he just has to watch it and hope it all turns out ok?Or maybe he just is not paying attention?
Does the calvinists god believe that God's goodness ordained and limited Hitler to Kill only 6 million Jews instead of more?
It does not matter what I believe it only matters what God says
Romans 13:Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
Daniel 2:21 "It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.
Daniel 4:17 "This sentence is by the decree of the angelic watchers And the decision is a command of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, And bestows it on whom He wishes And sets over it the lowliest of men."
Pro 21;The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.
"Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will includes even the sinful acts of men or then the scripture Romans 8:28 that God causes "all things to work together for good to them that love God" has no meaning of substance .
Augustine in his Enchiridion, Ch. 100:
'In a way unspeakably strange and wonderful, even what is done in opposition to God's will [of desire] does not defeat his will [of decree]. For it would not be done did he not permit it, and of course his permission is not unwilling, but willing; nor would a Good Being permit evil to be done except that in his omnipotence he can turn evil into good'.
We know, as Luther knew, men act differently from each other. We observe this fact evey day.
The question is (and always has been) why?.
