"I would suggest you start with 2 Peter 1:20 which does not condone private interpretation of Scripture..."

Prophecy of Scripture......

2 Peter 1:21
20 First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation,
21 because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. *

Big difference.

The old pope is demonized, marginalized and persecuted. So are the faithful.

At least we're in good company!

We all have to accept that we're going to die. This lets us be at peace, and that gives us the edge.

What worship of Mary?

NYer probably has read scripture more than you have.

Prophecy of Scripture:

2 Peter

2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people even as there shall be among you lying teachers, who shall bring in sects of perdition and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

Sects of perdition are destructive heresies.

And there are lots and lots of sects out there now. Most from the 1600s.

Sola, every man his own pope; every man his own prophet
as his spirit sees fit.

The Holy Spirit does not and cannot give divided interpretations of Scripture.

Hey guys — we’re in agreement!

My Bible — and yours — was written by inspired men of God and compiled by the early Church. I think our only difference is that I read it and believe it and obey it, but some folks on this thread follow myths and fables and religious politics instead.

Kinda like the Pharisees. (Read about them in the Gospels, written by apostles and first-century disciples, compiled by your spiritual forefathers.)

Op —

There have been sects since the early days. Read again the letters to the seven churches that John penned while on Patmos. Look at the history of the first millennium, at how so-called Christians were burning each other. What a shame to the name of our Lord.

Christ prayed beautifully for unity, recorded by John in chapter 17 of his gospel. Those of us who wear his name have in common not men’s traditions or legends of history, but a faith that the promises made to the Patriarchs came true in the birth, death, and resurrection of the Son of Man.

Scripture tells that story. It is our common ground, and my only allegiance is to the Lord. Yours should be to, not to some guys in funny garb who covet earthly power and make up new rules in Rome.

All of us, NYer especially have a very very good understanding of Scripture.

What we don’t have is the hubris and pride that goes along with personal interpretations, and I don’t call people nasty names.

There have been heresies since the early days.

“my only allegiance is to the Lord.:”

So is mine. And has been for a very long time.

“Yours should be to, not to some guys in funny garb who covet earthly power and make up new rules”

May God rebuke you for such lies. Your allegiance is to your interpretation of the god that lies between your ears.

Op, I didn’t call anybody a nasty name, and you know that.

I don’t know why you are so hung up on “interpretations.” Apparently someone has frightened you or warned you away from reading the ancient words of God. That is sad indeed.

The Father who created us all and who inspired His disciples to pen His words loves us. He does not make scripture too hard to understand.

Sure, self-absorbed men have always found ways to argue. But have you ever read the Bible cover to cover? If not, why not?

Have a little faith. Let our Lord speak to you through his Holy Word. Shed your fear. It’s not hard. He makes it easy. And you will be richly rewarded.

You are right. I should not have said that. Sorry that I offended, because I’m a really nice person and don’t like to hurt or be hurt.

I just get so discouraged when men claim to stand between believers and the Lord. It was a problem in the time of Jesus, too. Nothing new under the sun, as Solomon said.

“Op, I didn’t call anybody a nasty name, and you know that.”

You referred to us as pharisees and in the biblical context of phariseeism, that is a slur.

“I don’t know why you are so hung up on “interpretations.” Apparently someone has frightened you or warned you away from reading the ancient words of God. That is sad indeed.”

You assume a lot.

Pride of presumption is very serious. I’d suggest you look to yourself.

"Orthodox divine services are a priceless treasure that we must carefully guard," Hilarion has written. "I have had the opportunity to be present at both Protestant and Catholic services, which were, with rare exceptions, quite disappointing… Since the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, services in some Catholic churches have become little different from Protestant ones."

“When we journeyed among the Bulgars, we beheld how they worship in their temple, called a mosque, while they stand ungirt.

The Bulgarian bows, sits down, looks hither and thither like one possessed, and there is no happiness among them, but instead only sorrow and a dreadful stench.

Then we went among the Germans, and saw them performing many ceremonies in their temples; but we beheld no glory there.

Then we went on to Greece, and the Greeks led us to the edifices where they worship their God, and we knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth.

For on earth there is no such splendour or such beauty, and we are at a loss how to describe it.

We know only that God dwells there among men, and their service is fairer than the ceremonies of other nations.”

The report of the envoys of Prince Vladimir of Kiev upon their return from Constantinople in 987.

Do you realize that many of the Pharisees were God-loving, God-fearing, honest and honorable men? Paul was a Pharisee. So was Nicodemus.

Other Pharisees, however, got caught up in power and in enforcing traditions that had developed through the ages as though they were the Word of God.

If you will read the Gospels, you will see time and again that Jesus spent much of his ministry setting them straight, showing them that a believer’s obedient heart trumps man-made rules and regulations.

Matthew 15: 8-9 — “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

Those to whom I referred as modern-day Pharisees are those who clutter the simple truth of God’s Word with man-made rules, imposing them on believers as did those religious rulers in the time of Christ. Since it didn’t occur to me that you might be one of them, I was not referring to you.

Your meaning was very clear in your usage. It was a slur.

“Matthew 15: 8-9 — “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

Thank goodness the Catholic does not do that. Goodnight.
