Urgent Prayer Request: Our oldest son is dead

I received this message from my dear friend Diamond today:

Our oldest son, Alexander, 29 was stabbed once in the heart yesterday afternoon at about 4:45pm, presumably by his younger brother, our son Peter, 18, presumably in self-defense. Peter is presently in custody.

Alex had severe bipolar disorder. He had attempted suicide several times in his life. He would occasionally become agitated and violent, but I tell you the truth, he did not have a malicious bone in his body. Alex lived alone in his small house. We spent many hours with him and he often came to our house. He was very lonely and Peter went late Monday night to be with him.

... our heart has been ripped out. My wife and I and our other children need your prayers desperately. There is a God in Heaven and all I know is that this nightmare is in his permissive will.

Our dear Alexander is gone. He was often a tortured soul. I pray that the Angels bore him to Christ yesterday afternoon. He tried so hard to be good. I think his mental disorder killed him. He has now ceased from his struggles.

Please pray for Peter, and for us

God bless you.

Diamond

Oh, my heart goes out to you, dearest brother in Christ, in this time of devastating loss for your family! I’m lifting prayers that God will comfort you and all your loved ones, and especially prayers for Alex and Peter.

In God’s wide mercy there is refuge for the tormented and the sorrowful. I pray that He will reach out loving arms to the sick man, to his younger brother, and to his parents.

Bettyboop, thank you for letting us know. This is so sad. May God's be gracious and merciful for all those with hearts hearting and grieving from this tragedy. May Peter soon and rightly be released and may it not be held against him if he was defending himself. May the whole family be comforted and rest in the grace of Christ knowing that God loves us, and is in control even in situations like this.

Romans 8:28,
Eric

Words fail to convey what we your fellow freepers feel for you and your family, Christian Brother! Our prayer is that His Peace be with you during this most stressful time.

The Lord protect Peter and comfort Mother and Father of these brothers. My own family of first cousins have endured this same tragedy, and the emphasis needs to be focused upon Peter and sustaining him from the depression he will endure now.

My wife and I suffered a similar loss, 3 1/2 years ago. My wife was half way through her dose-dense (high dosage rate) chemotherapy for breast cancer when our older son had a seizure while laying on his bed, got turned face down, and smothered. My wife was attending a cancer survivors group meeting, so David and I were home alone.

I was in another room and heard nothing, although we had talked just a few minutes earlier when we both answered the phone (on separate extensions).

The phone rang again, perhaps 20 minutes later, but he did not answer. I called to him, looked outside to see if his car was still there, and finally opened his door to see him lying on the bed, the back of his upper arms a ghastly bluish color. I tried CPR, obviously, but even that took a little time because his room was very cluttered and I had to get him turned over in a very small space, as well as to call 911.

I worked myself to total exhaustion, and would not quit until the medic was in position to take over, and I had to be helped out of the room - but all for naught. I had been able to restore color to his cheeks, but it was too late to revive him. My wife returned a couple of hours later, to see the fire truck, ambulance, and police at our house. A friend and neighbor - and retired minister - told her what had happened, to spare me the burden. I actually believe that her condition protected her from the intense devastation I felt, but magnified it for me.

But life does go on, and I can (usually) think about him without tears now. The exception was a few months ago, when his cat had to be put down due to recurrent cancer. I was surprised at how much the loss of that living link to my son affected me. That cat had chosen to spend a lot of time in my lap after David died, and I felt a connection to my son through him.
