Pope Appeals to Priests to Respect Liturgy

Cardinal Comments on Holy Thursday Letter

VATICAN CITY, MARCH 18, 2005 (Zenit.org).- In his annual letter to priests, John Paul II appealed for respect of liturgical norms in the celebration of the Eucharist.

When presenting the letter to the press today, Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, prefect of the Vatican Congregation for Clergy, commented that the use of more popular language in the celebration of the liturgy does not always help people understand what they are living.

Asked about the topic of obedience in the letter, to which the Holy Father said priests commit themselves "on the day of their ordination," the cardinal replied: "From the press one learns that there is no lack of abuses in the sacred rite of the Eucharist."

The cardinal said that his Vatican congregation receives complaints because "at times the rite is celebrated perhaps in a rather indelicate manner. It depends on people's sensibility, but the Holy Father reminds us priests that it is the most sacred action we can carry out."

That is why the Holy Father wrote the encyclical "Ecclesia de Eucharistia," which also speaks of the "rite's form, of the holiness of the rite," Cardinal Castrillón said.

Moreover, he added, "the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments wrote an instruction, 'Redemptionis Sacramentum,' approved in a special way by the Holy Father, as at times more popular gestures are made in the belief that people need a very simple language to understand the liturgy better."

Cardinal Castrillón added: "The sacred rite, the holiness of the rite, the imperative to submerge oneself in the rite, is something we must do with all possible holiness, including external. The Holy Father speaks about this.

"Always with great respect for the local hierarchy, the bishops, who are the authority in their dioceses, the Holy Father requests priests to be obedient to the norms that are given to them by the bishops, especially, on the Eucharist."

John Paul II appealed for respect of liturgical norms in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Is it yet time to stop appealing for obedience on liturgical norms, and to start enforcing same?

"Always with great respect for the local hierarchy, the bishops, who are the authority in their dioceses, the Holy Father requests priests to be obedient to the norms

How many in the USCCB have EARNED this respect? How many actively work to undermine liturgical norms?

I love Pope John Paul II. I will literally cry when he leaves us. But we need a strong Pope who will stop appealing and start throwing out the dead wood.

"In a rather indelicate manner"?! LOL! Bring out the liturgical dancers, rock bands, and "Eucharistic Ministresses"!

Someone needs to tell the Holy Father that the bishops ARE the problem.
If the bishops were to do their job, the priests would fall in line.
Most of our bishops clearly do not honor the Traditions of our Faith.

Some bishops are the problem. Not all of them.

"Some bishops are the problem. Not all of them."

As I said:
"Most of our bishops clearly do not honor the Traditions of our Faith."

We have a few good bishops, Thank God.
We need more of them.

"Eucharistic Ministresses"!

Watch it buddy, I resemble that remark! ;o)

I am an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, and am very careful with what I do when offering the Body and Blood of Christ to the Communicants in my Parish. I am honored to be able to perfom this very important service, and am always joyful when doing so. I'm also very careful when cleaning the vessels after Mass.

From the article:

"The cardinal said that his Vatican congregation receives complaints because "at times the rite is celebrated perhaps in a rather indelicate manner."

Gee, ya think?

[snip]...but the Holy Father reminds us priests that it is the most sacred action we can carry out."

These priests must have gotten that memo already:

And when will everyone realize the arrogance of having the priest face the the congregation to simulate being at table with the congregation? As the congregation responds to the priest the priest becomes the focus. What is wrong with having both priest and congregation facing the same way and worshiping Our Lord together? Ditto with the cantor singing in the sanctuary as if giving a performance. Why is he or she not in the choir loft? (In a parish that I used to belong to, the priest periodically lead the congregation in applauding such entertainers. Made me want to run from the place screaming!)

If the lower picture is of your Mass, how I envy you!

I wish that there was an SSPX congregation in my area.

No, not mine but of St. Mary's Academy and College.

The little chapel I attend is far more humble, but still beautiful. This picture does not do justice to it, but it will give you an idea:

Nice pics.

I'll try to post some pictures here in a few weeks when Bishop Williamson comes to Orlando to dedicate the church and for Confirmations.
