Cardinal Arinze - "Youth will embrace religious life with right role models"
Post Gazette ^ | June 26, 2004 | Ann Rodgers

Posted on 06/26/2004 5:45:59 AM PDT by NYer

An influential and outspoken Vatican official told a Catholic group in Pittsburgh that if bishops, priests and sisters show a joyful commitment to traditional faith, young people will become priest and nuns.

"If you have a bishop who is no-nonsense ... a bishop who is transparently joyful in the priesthood, there will be seminarians," Cardinal Francis Arinze said to applause from 625 members of Serra International, a lay group that promotes vocations to the priesthood and religious communities.

Serrans from 18 countries are meeting at the Pittsburgh Hilton and Towers. They are named for Blessed Junipero Serra, the 18th century Franciscan who pioneered the California coast to evangelize Indians.

Arinze, 71, a Nigerian who runs the Vatican office on liturgy, is on many lists of possible future popes. A traditionalist, he is noted for a sense of humor coupled with a sharp candor.

"It is not true that young people of today are allergic to a life of sacrifice. But they want to be convinced why they should sacrifice marriage and earthly goods and give up doing their own will. Above all, they want to see people who are role models," Arinze said yesterday.

"Young women do not want to join a group of old women who seem to be confused [about their mission]. Young men do not want to join a diocese where the priests seem to be angry."

He compared nuns who did not want to wear religious garb to a flight attendant for Alitalia who wanted to wear the uniform of American Airlines. "What do you think Alitalia is going to say? Let's dialogue?" he asked, to laughter from his audience.

He defended celibacy, rejecting arguments that in some cultures men without wives or children are not respected.

"The gospel is a challenge for every culture. ... There is no part of the world where the gospel is sweet and easy," he said.

Decisions by Catholics to have few children have meant fewer priests, he said. Parents discourage priesthood and sisterhood because they want grandchildren or need grown children to support them, he said. He suggested that many potential priests "have been aborted."

Arinze noted that churches with married clergy also have a shortage. He spoke as Bishop Donald Wuerl of Pittsburgh prepared to ordain four priests today.

"They are really terrific young men. And how appropriate to have an ordination in the middle of a Serran convention," Wuerl said.

Yes, young people don't want to have crusty old fags grabbing their ass at the seminary.

They also don't want endure hostile interviews with Lesbian ex-nuns at the Vocations office at the diocese.

But I'm sure the trolls in the Lavender Mafia rub their claws together at the thought of another wave of seminarians.

Bishops Chaput and Bruskiewicz have no vocations crisis. Hmm..I wonder why.

Thanks for the Ping! Cardinal Arinze has that good combination of humor/candor. The "yewts" today are sometimes more knowledgeable of the catechism than their elders. As the unfortunate choices of priests/nuns leave and/or have less influence, I'm really praying that there is a revival to tradition and holiness. The Church is not evil but there are some who have committed evil in her name. I'm thinking we should pray for an increase in sanctified vocations to overpower the evil within and to support people like Cardinal Arinze (who would make an excellent pope, I believe). Is there anything we can do in addition to prayer to support the holy revival of the Church?

Seminaries bump!

**Arinze noted that churches with married clergy also have a shortage.**

This shoots down the 'no seminarians because of celibacy' argument.

Role models provided by the Concilliar Church:

Cardinal Law, Mahoney and Hunthausen. The Florida and Hawaii Bishops who reigned over $1,000 a night dinners with boyfriends. The Satanic "Reverend Father" Paul Shandley and the hundreds of other satanists, pedophiles and perverts. Even today they allow JESSE JACKSON into the pulpit to preach. Great role model that Jesse!

Yes! Email the Bishops/priests/clergy.

They are political and numbers sway them. I'm constantly on their cases for various things. I have used Father Sheridan's interview on abortion and have received a few emails back. Also, a thank you to those are helpful and encourage. I am sure many are suffering through this period.

The Holy Father said it is our duty to get after the Bishops.

Role models provided by the Concilliar Church:

Archbishop Raymond Burke, Archbishop Sean O'Malley, Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz, Bishop Timothy M. Dolan, Bishop Joseph A. Galante, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop Michael J. Sheridan ... etc.

Like the other SSPXers, you like nothing better than to ...

This allows one to criticize pope, Mass, and Council alike all day long, with never-ending moaning and groaning and breast-beating, sometimes in conspiratorial, apocalyptic, Chicken Little proportions. I don't think that is very helpful for the life of the Church, and in some respects it is as bad or worse than being a schismatic, for it is still within the Church, adversely affecting the faith and outlook of others, in my opinion.

"This allows one to criticize pope, Mass, and Council ..."

Please show ONE post where I have criticized His Holiness. Go ahead. Or where I have criticized Vatican II. Go ahead. As for criticizing invalid parodies of the Holy Mass, that is wrong?

*Please show ONE post where I have criticized His Holiness. *

Did I name you specifically? How about you show me one post where you actually showed your support for the Holy Father.

I know I've started this elsewhere, but I would really like to see the next Pope being from Asia or Africa -- places where the message really needs to spread faster and places where the leading Cardinals are conservative - like Cardinal Arinze from Nigeria or Cardinal Ivan Dias from India

"Like the other SSPXers, you like nothing better than to ... "

What does the word "you" in the above sentence refer to?

You said "Like the other SSPXers, you like nothing better than to ... "

Please explain your sentence. If you are claiming I slandered or attacked His Holniess, either prove your claim or withdraw it.

I will admit to speaking in generalizations and that is wrong. However, by lumping yourself in with those who do slander the Holy Father, their contempt is "shed" on the group as a whole. Frankly, I do not have time to research each and every thread and will accept your word that you, personally, nave not slandered the pope.

Narses, like him or hate him, the Holy Father sits on the throne of St. Peter, to whom were entrusted the Keys to the Kingdom. Throughout the course of 2000 years, there have been good and bad popes. Even the worst of them was guided by the Holy Spirit.

Who are we to question God? Christ promised that His Church would prevail and it has.

So "you" was a generaliztion?

What do you mean by "However, by lumping yourself in with those who do slander the Holy Father,..."

How do I do that? As for His Holiness, I love him, I pray for him and I daily as both Our Lord and His Mother to intercede for both his physical and spiritual help. Unlike some, I don't question God or His Plan.
