The Neverending Story (The Christian Chronicles)

The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Fourth, I am not interested in carrying on with the Culture/Religion discussion. It is going nowhere.

Fifth, you have raised a new question. Please explain, "No, I am actually saying that cultural conversion can be mistaken for a religious conversion (in the case of Pentecostals in S. America)...

Are you claiming the so-called "conversions" to Pentecostalism in South America are false?

I don't know that "false" would be the correct way to describe it. I think that if the person's object of faith is correct, then the rest of the theological dancing we do is, while not always unimportant or irrelevant, much ado about nothing. That is to say, if the person's faith is in Jesus and the wholeness he offers, then whether they have converted to a certain culture or not is irrelevant. Thus, attempting to "convert" people to a culture is an accretion to the Gospel. An accretion which we see denigrated in the New Testament, and an accretion which can harm a person's focus on the object of their faith and distract them from the true goal. And the true goal is the transformation of the self into a "little Christ" and a subsequent transformation of the culture around the person as he/she becomes salt and light.

I suppose he came to make everyone catholic and to give everyone a machete! lol

You quickly move to side arguments and argument from anecdote. It makes for wonderful soundbites, but does not advance your position in the least. Quite the contrary.

And he's been awful silent about it.

malakhi closed on his house on Wednesday, and has been very busy.

Hi Mack!

Hey did you close on your house?

Yep, had the closing at noon on Wednesday. Moved a lot of stuff that day, and some more yesterday. Been busy cleaning. I have the carpet cleaners coming at noon today. Hopefully I'll get the rest of the big stuff moved on Sunday.

But it is no longer a court. In form and function, the original inquisition operated very much like the original grand jury in an English county.

But but but the machinery still exists. For what purpose?

Intimidation?

Vatican accused on modern 'inquisition'

Two more scholars censured by Rome

Two European scholars under scrutiny for heresy

There's other articles as well. It seems consistent though that those accused are to accept the accusations in silence. Nope, no dominance and 'control' here! lol

Oh and I found that other link...

According to my sports history calendar:
April 2, 1972 - Needing only a tie in their last game to clinch a playoff berth, the Philadelphia Flyers are beaten by the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, on a goal by Gerry Meehan with a scant four seconds left at the Aud. Doug Favell is the victimized Flyer goalie, surrendering Meehan's 30-foot blast to enable Pittsburgh to squeeze into the playoffs by beating St. Louis, 6-2, on the season's final night.

See, Dave ... it's not always something bad about Pittsburgh. ;o)

As hard as it may be to grasp, this truth that Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in him is at the heart of our redemption.

Lenten Weekday
First Reading:
Psalm:
Gospel:
Jeremiah 20:10-13
Psalm 18:2-7
John 10:31-42

When we have to reply to anyone who has insulted us, we should be careful to do it always with gentleness. A soft answer extinguishes the fire of wrath.

 -- St. Alphonsus Liguori

The following is, as usual, from The Word Among Us:

Faithful Jews in Jesus' time were so reverent toward God that they wouldn't even quote Scripture without saying, "Thus says the Lord." That's how careful they were not to take any credit for themselves that really belonged to Yahweh. So you can understand why they were horrified when Jesus told them, "The Father and I are one" (John 10:30).

In answer to their accusations of blasphemy, Jesus used Scripture to show them how he had been consecrated and sent by God to do all the works he had been doing. He challenged them to look at these miraculous deeds as proof that God was indeed in him and he was indeed in the Father (John 10:38). When they still would not believe him, all he could do was return to the place where John the Baptist had ministered to fortify himself and recall the words that God spoke at his own baptism: "You are my Son, the Beloved" (Luke 3:22).

As hard as it may be to grasp, this truth that Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in him is at the heart of our redemption. It means that whenever we see the cross we aren't just seeing a man, Jesus of Nazareth, dying there. We are seeing the eternal Son of God, the all-powerful Word of the Father, giving up his life for us. Such a sacrifice makes our redemption complete and eternal. We have been redeemed by God himself! No other work is necessary, and nothing or no one can take it away from us.

With this great truth in mind, we can have great confidence before God. Even when we sin, we can turn to him in repentance and know forgiveness, for it has already been given on the cross. We don't need to hide from God or fear his wrath. From the beginning of time, he knew all our inmost thoughts and weaknesses and still he chose to send his Son. And from the moment he was hung on the cross, God was in him, reconciling the whole world to himself (2 Corin-thians 5:19). With so great a redemption, how can we ever doubt our God?

"Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ! You are the Mercy of God. Praise be to you for your cross, which has saved us and continues to deliver us from evil. Thank you, Father, for so great a redemption."

----------

God bless.

AC

They are not even into heresy hunting. The only papal judges I have met are rather diffident about charging liberal theologicans with anything. They seem to regard the 60s-70s generation as dangerous, but in decline. The way the national churches have been gallicanized most liberal scholars have friends in high places.

ANNOUNCEMENT

After almost 2 years of Torah discipline I've come to the conclusion that "prophecy in Hebrew scriptures concerning Yeshua as Messiah is interpreted retroactively and is forced.

My metamorphasis is complete.

I began my journey Catholic, I left them for Protestantism, I left them for Messianic Judaism, I left them for Monotheist Messianic Judaism and now:

I hearby proclaim, in the tradition of Ruth and of my late grandmother and Malakhi, who has made more sense to me than anyone on this thread.

"Your people are mine, your God is my God."

I will now begin the process of conversion to Judaism. I don't yet know which kind. May God strengthen you all in your quest for truth as well.

Now be nice. :-)

The truth - 0

I hearby proclaim, in the tradition of Ruth and of my late grandmother and Malakhi, who has made more sense to me than anyone on this thread.

The truth has been on this thread from the very beginning.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

I am sorry to hear you have rejected Jesus as your savior.

Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

A conversion to "I don't know which kind" sounds like an epiphany all right. Ya might consider Dr. Laura Judaism.
