It's hard to imagine someone like Ah-nold or even Reagan getting elected in any other country. In most countries, only long-serving members of the political establishment ever get elected. Having a rank outsider win and punch the established barnacle-encrusted status quo is one of the great strengths of our country. Even the election of Jesse Ventura served a purpose -- it let the two major parties in the state know that they had become too complacent and too detached from the voters.

Yes, it did work perfectly (although I doubt the "perfect storm" was necessarily planned that way - events often just take on a life of their own, outside of all efforts to control them). And, yes, SBprone, even though I supported Arnold all along, we need to pass along some pats-on-the-back to Tom and his supporters: For their support on Part 1 (which was crucial to the mandate) and for Tom largely staying away from attacks on Arnold in the debate and in the last week. He probably knew that his core support (the 12 or 13 percent) were social conservatives that simply couldn't go anywhere else - but would stay in the game with him in it.

In a funny way, he kept the coalition together, at least in part. And it was a coalition that could not otherwise stay together because of the particular make-up of the social conservative faction. They will never compromise, it's simply not in their make-up, and their standards are exceedingly high -- far beyond the reach of the remaining 85-90% of the population. So they sit at home (as many did in the '00 Presidential election) or they come out for their particular niche candidate -- as they did here.

I don't know if McClintock had this figured out in advance or not -- maybe he did. If he did, more power to him and may he have a great future.

I don't see how they can stand it. First 2000, then 2002 and now 2003 (hopefully). While Arnold might not be the most qualified, just the pain it is causing them is worth the victory. In fact, that's what is probably causing them the most pain.

Does anyone know of any GOP officials (national party members, Schwarzenegger campaign staff) or major conservative figures who have openly asked where the Democrats were when Dems were accused of sexual mistreatment of women (since now they are gunning for Arnold)?

I am going to be running a story on the recall in the upcoming issue of the college paper and am trying to find quotes like that to provide a nice balance to the requisite mention I will have to give of the attacks on Arnold for womanizing.

I am looking for big name Repubs. I have googled and ran a LexisNexis search, but only found little-known people. Did Rush make any comments about the Dem hypocrisy perhaps?

If anybody knows of people speaking out on this, let me know. Thanks!

This Recall is worse than a defeat for Democrats

It is another serious blow to our form of government, and if you ask me, the very fact this recall is taking place at all is an indictment of our educational system.

Our country was not founded on absolute majority rule, but rather on majority rule with very careful protections for minority rights. Our government, and system of selecting our leaders, was set up by our founding fathers, to insulate politicians as much as possible, from they daily ebb and flow of public opinion so that they could make the tough decisions that would inevitably be required. Recalls, and other such nonsense were specifically not included in the constitution for these very reasons. They knew elected leaders would be paralyzed every time they have to make a tough decision if they knew they could be removed from office for it.
