Either McClintock or Schwarzenegger Likely Winner in California if Other Dropped Out
With Arnold Schwarzenegger the Republican front-runner in the California gubernatorial contest, many GOP officials have pressured California State Sen. Tom McClintock to drop out of the race, fearing he will divide the Republican vote and allow Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante to win. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted over the past weekend, shows that McClintock does indeed draw support away from Schwarzenegger, though not enough to deprive the actor of the lead among probable voters. But the poll also shows that if Schwarzenegger were not in the race, McClintock would likely be in first place by a substantial margin, rather than behind Bustamante.

Time out, I know you are having fun repeating the new mantra on here already, the "hook line and sinker" BS, but tell me, how can a poll lie that McClintock could beat Busta, that (R)nold can beat Busta with Tom still in, then not lie when it says that (R)nold will win? I just don't understand how you people can so obviously contradict yourselves for what you want...

I think you misinterpreted what I wrote. I said that people are using this poll to say "Vote for McClintock, he can win!", but they are basing it on a hypothetical situation that does not exist. Schwarzenegger nor McClintock will drop out.

LOL - nothing to do but hand them a hanky next Tuesday night when they are crying in their beer. Can't say we didn't do our best to warn them. Logic certainly didn't work.....

Cheers, CC :)

Polls several weeks ago showed that 17-19% of democrats were going to cross over and vote for Schwarzenegger.

The polls show McClintock beating Bustamante, barely, and everyone wants Arnold to drop out???? How do they split up Arnold's vote? Have they considered the 17-19% of Democrats (half of Arnold's vote) returning to Buste'. Have they considered the people that Arnold has mobilized, that have never voted before, might decide not to vote again and on what impact it might have on the Basic Recall? Have they forgotten that the one thing Democrats can never be beaten on, is their ability to raise the dead to vote?

I'm afraid most of the people on this thread HAVE FORGOTTEN. Most of the people that are voting for Arnold are not pragmatic (as true conservatives have to be) but really believe he can make the difference. If Arnold were to drop out, I would not count on any of those votes going for the Recall, or to McClintock.

Ah yes, I did. No arguements there. There is nothing in this world that will stop the Stealth Candidate from his goal of acquiring power for its own sake. He has been positioning himself for a political career for YEARS, I got a kick out of the comments by the spokesman after the Oui article that he didn't live his life ot run for office, if there was ever anybody that wasn't true for, it was the ambitious (R)nold.

Especially being so close. Anyone to submit that (R)nold would ever drop out no matter what Mulholund releases in the next few days is kidding themselves.

How about the rest of it though, do you understand where I am coming from?

no, I disagree... the McClintock win is with Arnie
pulling demo celebrity worshippers and indies, while
Tom holds the conservatives and the people scared to
death of the economic/job melt down and their real
estate wealth disapprearing with the jobs!

LA Times -- but oh yeah, that poll lies too, wait, except for the part that has Arnold ahead if McClintock drops out, right? Boy, Team Arnold's twisted logic can get really confusing.

I'm was you until you characterized the Arnold vote. I am voting for Arnold because I do not honestly see any alternative unless I want Bustamante to be elected.

If Tom had gotten his numbers up over Arnold's, I'd be voting for him. I view his platform to be rock solid.

Wrong! Schwarzenegger has virtually every REPUBLICAN Party Hack endorsement in the state. That's a HUGE difference.

Arnold has many respected conservatives backing him. Perhaps you want to throw them all out, too, now, but your characterization of them as "hacks" does not make it so.

not surprising that Tom gets the indies, since they voted for him for Controller and like the idea of the CAR TAX rollback, and initiative to kill the tax...

You know what is interesting about the USA TOday/CNN/Gallup poll they are referring to, suggesting that Tom McC has a better chance of winning than Arnold?

Look at the question about how many people think Tom should drop out of the race. Well over 50%. So why the difference? How can more than half think he should drop out, yet these Tombots think he will (or would) win?

They're wrong. Period.

Really? I've read on numerous threads that the only reason Tom is doing so well in the polls is that the Demorats have been giving him a pass on all of his positions. Let's face it, Tom's a racist, homophobic, starve the children and old people, reduce education spending, pollute the environment kind of guy. Tom wouldn't last a week under the full Demorat machine.

You Tomikazees are wasting your breath. It's a done deal. Can you say "Governor Schwarzenegger"? I thought you could. Get used to it! Your party, the Republican Party is going to win the governorship of California! It's a good thing!

I understand, but I don't agree. At this point you don't want to cause another shakeup because it could threaten the recall itself. I disagree with those that still want McClintock to drop out at this point, it's simply too close to the big day and would cause a severe shakeup. I don't think that there would be 'hell to pay', I think the general shift to GOP (either candidate) is terrific. McClintock will have momentum and a higher profile to be able to take on Boxer. His favorable ratings and Schwarzenegger's favorables are both very high. Momentum would be on the GOP's side if the governorship is captured and a now well-known candidate steps in to take on Boxer. Boxer being in peril would significantly effect the momentum of the 2004 presidential race. This could play out well.

man, you are really gulping the koolaid... as I suggested

last weekend! Grayout has over $10 Million in ad buys still and isn't going to save it for Bustmytaxes to use...
its going to Mulholland slime all the time and this last
week is going to be a lifetime...

but lay off the nasty graphic crap, it really is beneath
you...

Such leg piddling! I don't know if you are truely a defeated Conservative, or someone who agrees with the Demos at least enough to not stand up and fight the press. Too close to call. Do you remember before Talk Radio the hate in the press for the 83-84 Reagan campaign? I do. They had the perfect storm with the woman VP, etc. They got one of the biggest defeats in US history by an unapologetic Conservative. Impossible.

Can you say "Governor Schwarzenegger"? I thought you could. Get used to it!

You bet. But I think you are going to rule the day you pushed for that. Call it a hunch.

Your party, the Republican Party is going to win the governorship of California! It's a good thing!

In 1990 it was only $3 billion debt when "it was a good thing" that a Republican In Name Only won the Governorship. That guy's passion to destroy the Conservative grass roots, as well as failure in all aspects of office, singlehandedly caused the chainreaction to cost the GOP every major position in the state. What do you think will happen this time?

nice theory, but the reality is that team Arnie will be
out to kill Tom off in '04 and will never think of backing
him for any office and won't let go a dime in his direction which is the same road they've rolled down for a
decade!
