I think having him in the race, and thus the debate, is a net plus. It would seem that after tonight's debate McClintock could gracefully say that he and Arnold agree well enough that he can wholeheartedly endorse Arnold. If he did that, he would benefit from having waited to drop out and come across admirably.

I wonder if a goodly portion of his "sticking in there" was so that he could participate in the debate and get his ideas to a bigger audience. (The public exposure wouldn't do his future political career any harm, either...)
