California GOP Insiders: McClintock Will Drop Out Eric Leonard, NewsMax.com Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 LOS ANGELES Leading elected Republicans have made it clear for the first time the party will stand behind only one candidate in the recall election to ensure a victory over Democrat Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante. Neither state Sen. Tom McClintock's nor Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaigns say they are considering dropping out of the race, but results from the most recent Field Poll, coupled with GOP pressure, point towards McClintock being asked to "take one for the team," insiders say.
"I believe we're going to have one candidate," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., during an appearance today on CNN.
He said the party's decision would likely be made during the state's Republican Party convention this weekend in Southern California.
"I'm going to the convention to bring the party together. I'm confident we're going to get to one candidate," Issa said.
Hours earlier, California Republican Party chairman Duf Sundheim made similar comments during an interview on Fox News Channel.
While McClintock has been more closely aligned with the Republican Party's traditional philosophies, Schwarzenegger continues to lead with voters, according to the most recent Field Poll.
The poll revealed little change in voter support now that Peter Ueberroth, a Republican who said he was running as an independent, quit the race.
With Ueberroth out, Schwarzenegger went from 25 to 27 percent, McClintock from 13 to 14 percent, and Bustamante from 30 to 32 percent.
However, with McClintock out, Schwarzenegger vaults into the lead over Bustamante.

And you think they don't have any dirt on McClintock? If Arnold drops out they'll start calling him anti-choice, anti-immigrant, etc. and end his campaign right then and there. Plus, McClintock doesn't have any money to run TV ads. When the media stops calling attention to his fiscal strengths, how's he going to get his message out?
To: Canticle_of_Deborah
Well, the article doesn't really say that McClintock will drop out - it just says there is a lot of pressure for McClintock to drop out - but we already know that.
I think Newsmax is just blowing smoke in order to get attention.

You're right. It occurred to me this morning that everyone knew Schwarzenegger MIGHT run a long time ago. Surely they've had time by now to dig up whatever dastardly deeds they could find.

And you can bet that the day after McClintock pulls out, the Democrat smear machine will unload whatever reserves of sleaze they have against Arnold. If it's devastating enough, that'll leave a whole lot of Republican leaders (and more than a few Freepers) with the makings of a huge omelet on their collective face.

And if cows could fly...
I'm not sure if you understand this or not, but Tom's name will still be on the ballot. Schwarzenegger's supporters could still move over to Tom. That doesn't mean that all of them would though. Some traditional leftists are going to move toward the right and vote for Schwarzenegger. And yes, he is farther to the right than Bustamante.

Doubtful. You've got to remember the Republican machine that got Arnie into the game in the first place and the initial support of Bush for Riordian. I doubt that the Republican party leadership would support McC for anything. Now if there's a primary involved, the grassroots may be able to get him through, but it's by no means a sure thing. (In other words, you might be able to hope for something like the last primary for governor, but not if you just assume it'll happen.)

Ah, so Newsmax is now the official propaganda piece of the powers that be. All clear now, thanks ;-)
I knew there was a reason I didn't read it anymore.

I predict they'll trot out somebody to accuse him of sexual assault/rape. It's the only thing he hasn't been accused of.

Best to keep McClintock in there until after the debate that Arnie participates in.
That way, they either have fewer questions or less time per question. I wouldn't trust Ahhnold with a lot, if I could fix it that he only had to deal with a little.
Besides you can obfuscate his positions with McClintock's and have him be gracious to Mac and win more of Mac's followers. (Or vice versa, of course.)

If Tom McClintock does in fact drop out, we are in for a bumpy ride here in Kalifornia. Tom McClintock is the ONLY Republican in this race.
That will leave Arnold The RINO, and he is slowly melding into BustaMEChA-lite.
Arnold sounds more like a Demoncrap than a Republican as the election draws nearer.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's views in his own words:Pro Gun Control
- "I'm for gun control. I'm a peace-loving guy." (Time magazine cover story, Aug 18, 2003) When interviewed on the issues by Sean Hannity on August 27th, Schwarzenegger admitted that he is for gun control. He said he supported both the Brady Bill and the ban on so-called "assault weapons." He said, "Also I would like to close the loophole of the gun shows." When asked by the Sacramento Bee to detail his positions on gun issues (scroll down), Arnold stated that he supports legislation to ban .50-caliber rifles, force gun buyers to pass a state-defined test in order to purchase a handgun, and require load indicators or magazine safety disconnects on new semiauto handguns.
- Pro Abortion
Schwarzenegger appeared on FoxNews' "Bill O'Reilly" program in May 2001 and said he disagreed with President Bush's pro-life position. "I'm for choice," Schwarzenegger said on the program. "The women should have the choice. The women should decide what they want to do with their bodies. I'm all for that." When interviewed on the issues by Sean Hannity on August 27th, Schwarzenegger admitted again that he is "pro-choice". - Pro Gay Agenda
From Cosmopolitan magazine, "I have no sexual standards in my head that say this is good or this is bad. Homosexual-that only means to me that he enjoys sex with a man and I enjoy sex with a woman. It's all legitimate to me." He also supports gay adoption, despite the fact that both conservative Republicans and moderate Democrats voted by a 61 percent margin for Proposition 22, the Defense of Marriage Initiative, which defined marriage as that between a man and a woman. (Newsmax, 28 July 2003)
When interviewed on the issues by Sean Hannity on August 27th, Schwarzenegger admitted that he is for legalized "domestic partnerships" which would give gay couples the same benefits as marriage. - Pro Big Government Programs
Regarding the passage of Proposition 49, a big government social scheme providing funds for after school programs: "Every California child deserves access to a proven, quality, life-changing afterschool program, and now they will have it. My hope is that, as goes California, so goes the rest of our nation." When interviewed on the issues by Sean Hannity on August 27th, Schwarzenegger said that he believes that social programs should be focused on children. He said, "I think the important thing, again, is that we work on education and really make sure that the kids have the first run at our treasury."
In the same interview with Hannity, Schwarzenegger said that he supports big government programs to buy back leases as a measure to protect the environment. He said, "I think that our state government and our federal government should negotiate to buy back the leases [from the oil companies.]"
- Pro Environmentalist Agenda
When a reporter asked him in early August to detail his positions on the environment, he said "I will fight for the environment. Nothing to worry about." When interviewed on the issues by Sean Hannity on August 27th, Schwarzenegger said he did not support offshore oil drilling. He said, "No, absolutely not. I think that we should stop the oil drilling and I think that our state government and our federal government should negotiate to buy back the leases [from the oil companies.]"
- Pro Clinton/Anti Impeachment
In 1999, Schwarzenegger told George magazine of his bitterness about the frenzy over Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton and the waste of time and energy it represented. "That was another thing I will never forgive the Republican Party for," he said. "I was ashamed to call myself a Republican during that period."
- Soft on Illegal Immigration
In a radio interview with KABC radio host Larry Elder on August 27th, Schwarzenegger said that allowing illegal immigrants to stay in the United States is "the right thing to do." Last year, while campaigning for his Prop. 49 after-school programs initiative, Schwarzenegger...declared in answer to a question from the audience: "I would never stand in the way of any child going to school, whether he or she is here legally or illegally, it does not matter." (Sacramento Bee, 24 August) - Proposition 54
Proposition 54 outlaws the racial boxes Californians are constantly asked to check on state forms. Apply to a state college or enroll a child in a public school, try to get married, seek employment with any city or county, interact in any one of countless ways with the state or its political subdivisions, and you will be asked question about your race. Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, who previously refused to take a position on the measure, said Saturday he opposed it. Schwarzenegger, speaking to Spanish language station KUVS-TV in Sacramento, said he believes "it is necessary to collect racial data for use in such fields as health and education." "If you take that out, it will be disastrous," he said. FOX News, 08, August - Sb60
SB60, which Davis signed Friday and touted over the weekend as he campaigned before a Latino audience in Los Angeles, poses grave security threats and undermines existing immigration laws, according to opponents who vowed to place the matter on the March 2004 ballot. The driver's license bill has become a rallying point for both sides in the recall campaign, which increasingly is focusing on immigration and racial issues. Many Republicans charge that Davis' support for the bill, after vetoing similar measures, is a desperate attempt to bolster his support in the Latino community. A Schwarzenegger spokesman said the actor will not support the referendum campaign but will seek other other ways to repeal the legislation. San Francisco Chronicle
