Geoghan killed in prison (Boston Herald)
Breaking news/by Eric Convey
Saturday, August 23, 2003

Former priest John Geoghan, a notorious pedophile whose case sparked the clergy molestation scandal of the past 18 months, died this afternoon after being attacked at the state prison in Shirley.

``The perpetrator has been isolated,'' said Kelly Nantell, a spokeswoman for the state Deparment of Corrections.

``Our investigation continues,'' she said.

The matter has been referred to the Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley's office.

Geoghan was serving a nine-to-10 year sentence at MCI Shirley for allegedly groping a boy at a Waltham swimming pool.

More than 140 people have claimed they were abused by Geoghan, claiming they were fondled or raped at locations ranging from church rectories to their own homes.

Geoghan would become one the most notorious pedophiles in the country - not only for the extent of his rampage against children but because relevations about his case led to the unraveling of secrecy within the Archdiocese of Boston.

Bernard Cardinal Law's cordial letters to Geoghan, mixing discipline with praise for his priestly service, that pushed many victims from disbelief to outrage.

In lieu of execution by the state of Massachussetts this will just have to do. A convict did what "the state" was too gutless to do.

True, because these people do not "Get Better". Anyone who thinks otherwise (Doctor of Sociology and Basketweaving, etc.) can put up or shut up, and invite the "Rehabilitated" home to live with them and their children for a while. I doubt there would be many takers.

I do not believe in "Rubber Stamp" executions. I can see where someone who was always a decent citizen who, when extraordinarily provoked beyond reason could snap and kill someone. They have to pay, of course-somehow.

But this swaggering, smug serial predator knew what he was doing, and did so with premeditation and deliberation, nearly 150 times, without regard for ruining lives.

He desperately needed killing, and was cheated out of his "Cure" by Massachusetts' stand on putting down rabid dogs.

Someone--or a bunch of someones--at the prison really messed up. He should've been in a segregation unit and watched like a hawk.

The guards and supervisors are going to be raked over the coals for this one, as they were for Dahmer--even though Dahmer was out of the seg unit for a few months before he & another guy were killed.

Generally, people who are in slam for offending against children don't make it through their entire sentences.

Honorable thieves, and all that....

The criminal justice system failed to appropriately collect.

I completely agree. The thug that done the perverted priest in was an exclamation point to the phrase: "that justice delayed is justice denied".

Should marijuana smokers be executed, you Taliban-reject?

I have a feeling most prisoners would not murder a pot smoker as quickly as they might murder a Dahmer or this guy. They have a sense of justice --- just not as easy a justice as the State.

#44's gone....

I was raised Roman Catholic. My parents invited priests over to our home for Sunday dinner. I went to Catholic school. Except for that one younger priest after the enactment of Vatican II, I never had a problem with the priests in our parish. No one has ever bothered me, or ever complained about any priests that served in my parish. That younger priest was a problem, because at age 7, I knew a marxist revisionist when I saw one....to my knowledge, he was hell bent on turning us into little commies instead of gay.

Your temporary residence may hate whites, conservatives, middle class, etc. and take it out on anyone they perceive to fit that class.

That is quite true of most prison environs in this country. Not that I'm too choked up over this one....molesters (Chesters) get booked in the joint all the time...but I would hesitate calling all inmate murders a good thing. There are a lot of milquetoast non-violent prisoners tossed in with the sharks and they don't deserve death or rape. I would elaborate on who does most of the raping in the joint from what I know but the AMs don't much care for that kind of truth telling....it's not terribly diverse.

Only black and white TV? What is this, the 1950s? You retrograde.

I know, I am a mean-spirited conservative. Maybe we could limit their porn to R rated and only give them basic cable, too. No, way too harsh for liberal judges.

Christ forgives sinners who choose His gift of eternal life and make a decision to turn away from thier sin. Christ forgives those who voluntarily come to Him; he does not automatically "forgive sinners." Hell will be quite full of sinners who died rejecting Christ and His gift of eternal life.

That said, when God created us he gave us the emotion of anger; anger is made for times such as this. Anger is what motivates us to seek to punish those who prey on society and a special anger exists for those who brutally victimize the most helpless in our midst. Those on this thread who are celebrating the death of this monster have every right to do so.

The state of Massachusetts is the state that made famous homosexual "fisting" classes for adolescents. That they did not give this child rapist a just sentence is no surprise. The fact that a fellow inmate at a prison that the Reverend put himself into meted out a fate that should have been done by the state is nothing to be sorry about. I am a Christian and I feel an enormous sense of relief that this man will never rape a child again.

I trust in God. I think what the priest did was horrible. I also believe that his murder is tragic. God does amazing things. It's not impossible to believe that he might have walked away from this after his prison sentence and somehow managed to do some good in the world. I believe God works miracles like this all the time. Two wrongs do not make a right. This thread is so ugly.

Well, let us hope he sought the forgiveness of God. There is no sin so heinous that Christ's mercy will not cover it.

There are objective wrongs (such as murder, pedophilia, theft, etc.) for which there must be an accurate accounting. The ALF/ELF makes no attempt to right those objective wrongs. That makes their actions criminal, not vigilantism (a term that has a undue negative connotation, imo).

Do you really believe it was appropriate justice that Geoghan continue to live? And you call ME the sick pup? Pot, meet kettle. You two have something in common.

That was a courageous remark...but I don't think the forum should let "Tool of Satan" remarks stand.

"It is a travesty of morality, justice, and civilization to subject prisoners to rape, torture, and abuse."

It's a travesty of human intelligence to honestly assume that rapists, sadists and murders, who are in prison for rape, torture and murder will not rape, torture and murder while in there.

The only option to keep all prisoners free of rape, torture and abuse is to stick each and every prisoner into solitary confinement. Go ahead. Try it. I dare you.

Did you miss all the outrage for the past few decades about WHY we should not let rapists, murders and sadists with life terms out on parole? Or did you think that was empty rhetoric?

These people are predators. They were predators before they went to prison. They are predators while IN prison, or the bigger preditors will eat them alive. It's survival of the fittest for these people in the street. It's survival of the fittest for them in prison. This is their life. This is their mindset.

The priest wan't killed for no reason. There WAS a reason, though none of us know what it is. Getting all histrionically morally equivilant like an ACLU lawyer wannebe isn't going to change basic human nature, and these guys are in prison because they are human beings who are unable not to prey on the rest of the population. The motive for every crime is as individual as the person who commits it.

Don't judge the rest of us because a predator in prison killed the priest predator in prison, especially when some of us anonymous posters may have greater and more intimate understanding into the criminal mind than you do. The good father isn't the first child rapist to be murdered in prison and he won't be the last, and NONE of them will be mourned.

Not to nit-pic, but blaspheming the Holy Spirit is the one unforgivable sin.

And in the Christian view, it's possible that his final pain and suffering brought him to a true confession and sorrow for his sins where a life of pleasure behind bars --- with all the cable television, free movies, nice gyms and good food would not have brought him to repentence.

Prisoners have a legal and moral right to their sentences.

I agree.

RC is about as Satanic as the Masonic Lodge.

Roman Catholicism doesn't have those 32 and 33rd degrees, either....
