Alouette checking in from Southfield, Michigan (just across "8 Mile"). Power out all day Friday. Power came on across the street at about 9:30pm Friday. Neighbors on our block really PISSED. Our power came back on at 1:30am Saturday, being the Sabbath we couldn't turn on appliances or computers until this evening.

I just don't have the patience to go through this massive thread. Of course I think it was sabotage. Here's my list of suspects, in order:

1. A Green (probably Canadian)
2. Disgruntled laid-off outsourced utilities employee
3. A Raghead
4. The Y2K bandaid fell off.

Apparently, this should have stopped in Ohio and should not have taken down NY, etc. All they need is one ex-convict who changed religious affiliation in prison in a power plant. And, people acting calm is imo a soft target.

Whatever happens before election day, minor or major, it's a given that it will be President Bush's fault.

I just had a teenage palmetto bug walk across my desk. No bug spray so I sprayed him with pine cleaner. At least he'll be clean. Why do bugs hang around my pc station and nowhere else at my home? Maybe they're DU. LOL

You're back... alright!

We never lost power completely up here where I live (about 20 miles north of Hartford, CT), but lights all across CT flickered at the same time NYC, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto, Ottawa, etc. lost all power. Actually, the western part of CT lost power.

I didn't give it a passing thought until I got in my car and heard Sean Hannity going nuts on the radio, saying that "WABC, ABC TV... I think all of NYC has had a massive power failure". Once I learned about the other cities - and power was lost at the same time our lights flickered - my first thought was terrorism.

We watched the NYC power outage coverage on Fox News Thursday night... incredible images! People sleeping in the streets... Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. completely dark...

The building maintenance guys in my wife's office tower said to beware of air bubbles in the plumbing when you flush. Can get very messy. :(

FYI - all I know about this is below, as appears at - http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/bugtraq/2003-08/0231.html:

From: Virtual Master (vmastermmd.ath.cx) Date: Fri Aug 15 2003 - 13:49:06 CDT

The german publishing house "heise", producing the magazines c't and ix, got a news on their page mentioning a probable link between the worm and the power outage.

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/ju-15.08.03-001/

The article is in german, but I'm trying to translate the important pieces to english:

The failing niagara power-plant belongs to National Grid USA. That power-supplier is listed as a reference customer of Northern Dynamics. Norhtern Dynamics labeled themselves as "Home of the OPC Experts" and offer a range of products that use OPC for control and operation systems.

OPC stands for "Ole for process control" and is based on microsofts COM/DCOM model. In a network affected by the W32.Blaster worm the DCOM-communcation fails, and therefor OPC fails on unpatched systems.

OPC is employed among other things for the linking of so called SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), as used by power-plants.

The OPC experts from northern dynamics also list General Electrics, Siemens AG, european power-plant constructor ABB and the european organization for nuclear research as reference customers.

I'm glad it worked out for you. :) Where does the M9 run? I'm *so* unfamiliar with buses -- I just know that the M15 (I think) stops on Water Street. What can I say? I'm more of a subway chick? :)

I know! Isn't that a great feeling, especially in this hot -n-humid weather? If it doesn't rain, we're heading to an Israeli Market Fair on Lawnguyland today. But with my luck, it'll get rained out...

So, have they stopped hectoring us to use the a/c and "large appliances" sparingly, or do I still have to feel guilty every time I turn on the a/c?

That is a problem, I know. We're without hot water, but we can deal.

This was quite an adaptable situation, and a positive event for my family. My daughter wrote a poem about it by candlelight (she's 8). I dragged my guitar out and played a few tunes on the steps with some guys.

The M9 runs from Union Square to around GZ. Goes east on 14th, turns down B, through Chinatown (East Broadway) to downtown. Murray? I think to West Broadway.

It's a good ride when you need it. Subways were fine, yesterday.

I made a real good career move yesterday by showing up.

Their remains should be incinerated and flushed down a toilet.

No way, that would infect the water supply! They have to be disposed of in a level 4 toxic waste dump.

For some reason, that visual reminds me of the infamous guitar-smashing scene at the toga party in Animal House. :)

FV's account of what really happened in Ohio. "It was Akbar's first day on the job at the plant. He was on break from orientation and wandered away from the group for awhile. Later that week, he was promoted in a show of good faith by management."

Fine. We agree on the approach, but differ in the details. The level 4 toxic waste dump would be fine.

This story alleges to be the cause of this event, so I posted it.

____________________________________________________________ Al Qaeda Claims Responsibility For Power Blackout In U.S.! Al-Hayat

A communiqué attributed to Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the power blackout that happened in the U.S. last Thursday, saying that the brigades of Abu Fahes Al Masri had hit two main power plants supplying the East of the U.S., as well as major industrial cities in the U.S. and Canada, "its ally in the war against Islam (New York and Toronto) and their neighbors."

The communiqué assured that the operation "was carried out on the orders of Osama bin Laden to hit the pillars of the U.S. economy," as "a realization of bin Laden's promise to offer the Iraqi people a present."

The statement, which Al-Hayat obtained from the website of the International Islamic Media Center, didn't specify the way the alleged sabotage was carried out. The communiqué read: "let the criminal Bush and his gang know that the punishment is the result of the action, the soldiers of God cut the power on these cities, they darkened the lives of the Americans as these criminals blackened the lives of the Muslim people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. The Americans lived a black day they will never forget. They lived a day of terror and fear… a state of chaos and confusion where looting and pillaging rampaged the cities, just like the capital of the caliphate Baghdad, and Afghanistan and Palestine were. Let the American people take a sip from the same glass."

It added: "we heard amazing statements made by the American and Canadian enemies which have nuclear physics universities and space agencies, that lightning hit and destroyed the two plants. And we are supposed to believe this nonsense. If the blackout occurred in one or two cities, their lie would have been credible. But the fact is that the blackout hit the entire East and part of Canada."

The communiqué continued: "one of the benefits of this strike is that the U.S. will not live in peace until our conditions are met, such as releasing all the detainees including Sheikh Omar Abdulrahman, and getting out of the land of the Muslims, including Jerusalem and Kashmir."

The authors of the communiqué said that the strikes aimed at "hitting the major pillar of the U.S. economy (the Stock Exchange)," considering that the operation was "a message to the UN, which is opposed to Islam, and is based in New York. It is a message to all the investors that the U.S. is no longer a safe country for their money, knowing that the U.S. economy greatly relies on the trust of the investor." They added: "seven major airports stopped working, which is a strike to airlines companies; nine nuclear reactors broke down, something that never happened before, and this is considered as a major economic hit for the nine reactors in the states of New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Michigan. Means of transportation broke down: trains, cars and trucks, which resulted in great losses. The Internet stopped, leading to a freeze in trade transactions. The international banks headquartered in New York closed, not to mention the great losses incurred by the insurance companies, and the massive deployment of the police and security forces."

The communiqué mentioned that some economists said the blackout in the U.S. and Canada would cost the U.S. Treasury no less than ten billion U.S. dollars and in order to "break the hearts of U.S. officials, just know that the cost paid by the Moujahideen to sabotage the power plants was a mere seven thousand dollars. Die of sorrow!"

The communiqué ended with: "we tell the Muslims that this is not the awaited strike, but it is called the war of skirmishes (to drain the enemy), and that the American snakes are enormous and need to be consumed and weakened to be destroyed. We tell the people of Afghanistan and Kashmir that the gift of Sheikh Osama bin Laden is on its way to the White House; then the gift of Al Aqsa, and do we know what is the giftof Al Aqsa, where and when? The answer is what you are seeing!"

Hey everyone! Just got back to work today in NYC. Lousy experience on Thursday with the Blackout. Lights went out in our building (we are on the 39th Floor, air conditioning, computers, phones, etc. were all out). At first the building manager thought it was just our building then we all found out it was all over the city - finally, he said we have to evacuate before it gets dark. It was horrible. We had to walk down 39 flights of stairs (thank god we weren't walking up the stairs). I now live in Queens so I had to walk 1 mile to the Queensboro bridge and then over it into Queens - With the hordes of people all converging onto the bridge it took 3 hours to walk home. It is 3 miles to my home. Most people were very good natured though considering the extreme heat and humidity. When we finally got power restored on the weekend and I was able to watch Fox News I realized how big the blackout really was. The funny thing is that Fox put music to the Blackout of 2003 like it does for everything from Sept. 11th to the War to Lacy Peterson to Chandra Levy. I just stood there laughing when I heard the music. LOL Fox is getting very dramatic!!!
