No, it's not unprecedented at all. I'm dating myself, but back in the early 60s, there was major outage of ConEd that blacked out the entire Eastern seaboard for about 12hrs.That was really something to behold. Of course, in those days, we didn't worry about terrorism. Now, it's the first thing that comes to our minds whenever something odd happens: is it terroristic sabotage?

Today I am especially glad that JimRob is from Fresno, and not NYC, or Cleveland, or Detroit,...

Gee, I guess that would be me.

Not quite freaking out, pal. Just incredulous that the government would come out within moments and say "no terrorist attack". Then Bloomberg comes on and says "100% certain not a terrorist attack" within less than an hour.

How can they know that? How can they know there's no possibility? They called every power station? They checked every link, every tranformer, every substation, or whatever?

Who are they kidding?

They could have just come out and said "We don't know yet, we're looking into it". It's irresponsible to come out and immediately say "it's not terrorism" when they couldn't possibly know at that point.

They did the same thing with the Anthrax attacks in Florida, and it was just as obvious that it was to try to stem a public panic.

I'm hardly freaking out, friend. I'm just disgusted at this blatant decietfulness.

Yeah, aren't we lucky today?

I have co-workers hoofin' to the Island.

Anyhow, I've got to go find my wife and daughter. They haven't arrived yet.

Another day in the neighborhood. People from abroad would be amazed at how inured we are at this business.

We're Americans. We don't find a camera and become instant drama queens for media consumption during traumatic events. We just do what we gotta do.

I hope the backup diesel generators at all nuclear plants in the affected area have started up. Loss of offsite power is a major design basis accident for nuclear plants.

Never heard of that.

Yes, one plant going down could cause widespread problems. It's not supposed to, but it can happen. The real problem is there are loop flow problems around Lake Erie on the transmission system, so I would think that could be a contributing factor to this wide spread outage, considering the cities that have been affected.

Yes, there is a loop flow around Erie, which has been a point of contention between Detroit Edison and Canada for years. Its undoubtedly a contributing factor. As well, we'll see just how well all the utilities affected decided to protect themselves against contingencies. I've seen one utility in that area that routinely loaded circuits to their limit for economic reasons. They expected to shed load in the event of a problem - by human intervention. As if a human could outrun this scenario.

In our house, reefr'd food that is distinctly green or brown is "bad." If not, it's "good." Stop over. Eat at your own risk.

Well that's a clever design - one incident is designed to shut down half the country.

For a few hours or a day at most.

If the grid doen't disconnect, the wildly gyrating power levels would burn out generators and trash turbines.

It takes AT LEAST six months to build a replacement generator.

Imagine how long the power would be off if a few score generators fried...

You're right.

Nobody is frightened in the subways.

I am wrong to pray for "frightened victims".

Pray for those innocently affected...some of whom might be a "tad" scared. Okay?

I'm on your side Karl. People were questioning how the government could say so quickly that it was not a terrorist attack. My response was that all it takes is for someone, anyone, at the power company to say, "This is what happened."

"That leaves clueless PR hacks to talk to the reporters. "

---

I think that's about right. I've heard both that the grid in Canada went out, which caused the blackouts in NY & the rest of the US, then I also heard that the NY power outage spread to Canada.

I guess we may know what happened in a few days.
