BOMBAY, India - U.S. and Indian scientists said Wednesday they have discovered a new carnivorous dinosaur species in India after finding bones in the western part of the country.
|
The new dinosaur species was named Rajasaurus narmadensis, or "Regal reptile from the Narmada," after the Narmada River region where the bones were found.
The dinosaurs were between 25-30 feet long, had a horn above their skulls, were relatively heavy and walked on two legs, scientists said. They preyed on long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs on the Indian subcontinent during the Cretaceous Period at the end of the dinosaur age, 65 million years ago.
"It's fabulous to be able to see this dinosaur which lived as the age of dinosaurs came to a close," said Paul Sereno, a paleontologist at the University of Chicago. "It was a significant predator that was related to species on continental Africa, Madagascar and South America."
Working with Indian scientists, Sereno and paleontologist Jeff Wilson of the University of Michigan reconstructed the dinosaur skull in a project funded partly by the National Geographic (news - web sites) Society.
A model of the assembled skull was presented Wednesday by the American scientists to their counterparts from Punjab University in northern India and the Geological Survey of India during a Bombay news conference.
Scientists said they hope the discovery will help explain the extinction of the dinosaurs and the shifting of the continents how India separated from Africa, Madagascar, Australia and Antarctica and collided with Asia.
The dinosaur bones were discovered during the past 18 years by Indian scientists Suresh Srivastava of the Geological Survey of India and Ashok Sahni, a paleontologist at Punjab University.
When the bones were examined, "we realized we had a partial skeleton of an undiscovered species," Sereno said.
The scientists said they believe the Rajasaurus roamed the Southern Hemisphere land masses of present-day Madagascar, Africa and South America.
"People don't realize dinosaurs are the only large-bodied animal that lived, evolved and died at a time when all continents were united," Sereno said.
The cause of the dinosaurs' extinction is still debated by scientists. The Rajasaurus discovery may provide crucial clues, Sereno said.
India has seen quite a few paleontological discoveries recently.
In 1997, villagers discovered about 300 fossilized dinosaur eggs in Pisdura, 440 miles northeast of Bombay, that Indian scientists said were laid by four-legged, long-necked vegetarian creatures.
Indian scientists said the dinosaur embryos in the eggs may have suffocated during volcanic eruptions.

He/she has indeed, exemplary posts!
DittoJed worked hard though: she had to reply to a lot of posts in a short time. I'm not satisfied with her offhand treatment of my posts regarding the Grand Canyon sequence and how it could be explained in terms of a single flood event (ie it can't) but she just went for an AiG explnation with no room for discussion. I suppose she was overwhelmed by the number of posts.
She does miss the point of science, though, especially where she fulmigates against the fact that 'science changes its mind to fit new facts' that's the whole point of it!
I agree sorta - every website does not contains spin (most maybe). It is all about agenda are you trying to find truth or prove your point.
It is up to you as the reader of said site to figure out what is and what is NOT spin.
Right on brother.
The man is an athiest, and anyone that says that athiesm is a religion is spinning as far as I am concerned.
You are entitled to your opinion but the dictionary runs contrary to your opinion so you will have to base your opinion on faith.
Athiesm is a LACK of religion, not A religion, there is a HUGE difference.
WRONG. Atheism is the religion that believes there is no God. Like all religions, atheism is based on faith a faith that there is no God. There is absolutely no scientific proof that God does not exist so Atheism is a belief system a type of religion.
Atheism - Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.
Religion - A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion
Atheism is not the LACK of religion it is the LACK of a God in ones religion. Atheism is based on faith the faith in a belief there is no God.
OK. What makes one a Christian?
In the words of Homey the Clown: "Last Visible Dog don't play that"
Exactly. Clinton is a Southern Baptist who goes to church regularly but I expect many, if not most, on Free Republic would deny that he's a Christian.
I could argue that Clinton used Christianity to suit his purposes, put on the appearances of religion to make himself look good, but many devout Christians would be outraged by that argument, and I expect many would argue that in fact Clinton must be a Godless atheist.
If we can't resolve the conundrum of Clinton and Christianity, what about Hitler and the Catholic Church?
Many Jews are justifiably outraged that the Catholic Church did not do more to prevent the Holocaust, some even going to the absurd lengths of arguing that the Catholic Church somehow benefitted from the Holocaust, which is simply untrue.
On the other hand, individual members of the Church did a lot to prevent the Holocaust. It's a complex subject.
In fact, there were nominally Catholic Nazis, but I don't think Hitler remained a Christian after he became a grown man. Certainly not an exemplar of the Christian faith.
I think it's fair to say that Social Darwinism was far more important to the Nazis than Christianity, but killing Jews was rationalized on grounds of faith as well as race. Religious anti-Semitism is historically a sad fact.
One just has to marvel at the amount of rationalization it would take to formulate the above view of what actually happened, and who actually tried to silence whom.
Remember, my alleged sin of "ridicule" was to simply advise, and I quote, "If you're going to make an analogy, make sure it's a valid comparison." Apparently such things are shockingly controversial and "suppresive" to creationists, I hadn't realized. My mistake.
Speaking of slap down, I also seem to have attracted a stalker,
Speaking of namecalling and belittling...
Oh, right, certain people can critique evolutionists, but if one of them posts a rebuttal, it's "stalking" -- at least according to the double standard. I get it now.
or at least someone who has pet names for his invisible opponent.
...because someone else ran to mommy when I used his posting name, so I needed some other way to denote that quoted text originated from someone other than the person to whom I was posting.
Maybe I'm just paranoid.
"Persecution complex" is much less judgemental a term.
It seems to be a popular self-indulgence among many creationists, given their willingness to confuse refutation with "suppression", "ridicule", and "stalking", and the manner in which they blame their inability to pass muster in the scientific community on the "conspiracy" to "silence" them.

I'm not whining. I'm pointing out facts. Stalkers stalk. I think it is pretty hilarious.
That is his right as a poster in this forum, if you don't like it, perhaps you should find another thread?
If you don't like what I post, you don't have to respond either, especially with comments like that. Read my tagline, you fit right in.
In the discussion, a scientist's integrity was questioned. I wrote to the scientist and received replies from a representative. The best I can do is to divulge a portion which has a request for those that question the integrity of Dr. Baumgarnder.(not you, RA)
Therefore, please have the individual(s) contact me at jarend@icr.org so that I may interact directly with them rather than having to burden you as the 'go-between'.
