The city is opening a full-fledged high school for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students - the first of its kind in the nation, The Post has learned.

Operating for two decades as a small alternative program with just two classrooms, the new Harvey Milk HS officially opens as a stand-alone public school with 100 students in September.

Located at 2 Astor Pl?

I get my haircut on the ground floor of the same building!

I guess they'll take over the bathrooms at the Barnes & Noble next door for "recess."

They could have a class on antiques as well. They're all over the place in this business.

I think one of the great contrasts in NYC is to see the kids from the high school of the Arts coming out the same time as the kids from Martin Luther King High, which is practically next door. Its bad enough that I have to put up with the a--holes from John Jay hogging up starbucks while the kids from MLK terrorize the local delis when school is out.

"This school will be a model for the country and possibly the world,"

The things politicians do for votes continues to amaze and shock my sensibilities.

there's no hope for them.

They are beyond hope now, as demonstrated by the election of Hillary.

California is gone as well.

Modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. Stick a fork in them, they are done.

they single themselves out for being "different", and then complain when they are treated differently.

Just like kids who dress bizarre or wear drastic hairstyles, then act annoyed if anyone stares at them.

LOL!

Sorry, but I had to include Ca. on my list of gonners. It seems the democrats are quite proud that they now have control of it.

Not a good thing when the opposition gives up as they did. I hope they can get some power back.(at least in the state house, cuz governors can do little to correct the direction the state is travelling to)

That progressive BS has got to stop.

A common misunderstanding is that the "Twinkie Defense" was an argument that excessive consumption of Twinkies led to a state of insanity in which Dan White was not responsible for his actions (specifically, the murder of Harvey Milk). In actuality, however, the Twinkies were not presented as the cause of White's mental illness, but a symptom. The defense argued that Dan White suffered from severe depression and at the time of the murder he was unable to distinguish right from wrong. As evidence of his condition, they presented the fact that White -- usually very helath-conscious -- had been living on a diet of nothing but Twinkies. Thus, the "Twinkie Defense" is commonly misunderstood, and it is mistakenly believed by many that Dan White argued that Twinkies drove him to murder, when actually there were argued to be a result of the same cause of the murder.

On a more on-topic note, I've frequently been accused of being "pro-gay" here on FR, but I must say that the idea of a "gays only" public high school is one of the worst uses of taxpayer money that I can imagine, and that I find the notion of homosexuals segregating themselves into seperate schools utterly absurd.

Thank you for the analysis. I'm a boomer and at the time I was working in the general area where it happened. It was all over the news, of course. But it's nice to know the insides of the trial. All I remember was a sugar defense.

Nah, San Francisco is so ahead of the times, it's already got the "Harvey Milk Civil Rights Elementary School." I'm serious.

There is no greater sting than a rebuke containing the truth.
No, it's not gay bashing. It's factual information. To some, the truth hurts.
