Motorcycle was clocked at 157mph, court told

By Stewart Payne (Filed: 18/06/2003)

A motorcyclist was recorded travelling at 157mph as he flashed past a police camera, followed by a friend doing 148mph, a court was told yesterday.

It is believed to be the highest speed recorded on a British road and both riders were warned to expect a stiff penalty after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.

Neil Bolger pleads guilty after being caught in a police speed trap in Buckinghamshire doing 148mph

The men, both 29, were said not to be racing each other. Andrew Osborne, from Leamington Spa, Warwicks, who was clocked at 157mph, and Neil Bolger, from Gaydon, Warwicks, must wait until next month to find out their sentence, but were given interim driving disqualifications.

Magistrates in Aylesbury, Bucks, heard that the men were spotted on the A421 near Buckingham speeding through an underpass on a dual carriageway noted as an accident blackspot. The road had a 70mph limit.

Theresa Murphy, prosecuting, said they overtook a lorry on a sweeping bend before being caught by the speed trap.

Darren Rogers, defending Osborne, a master technician, argued that the case should be dealt with by magistrates and not referred to the Crown Court.

Nicholas Devine, defending Bolger, a lorry driver, said that although he was travelling at excessive speed there were no aggravating features. "There is no evidence of alcohol or drugs," he said.

The case was adjourned for four weeks for reports.

It's from the 09/04 2001 issue of Wiel magazine, from South Africa. Though the British influence remains there, they've got some talented designers and machine shops for building good ideas into metal realities.

But it's not precisely a springer front fork, at least not in the image of the Harley or Indian springers. It looks to be more akin to the BMW Earles leading link unit, if a good bit prettier and less bulky than those or the British *Dauntless* competition leading link front forks oft used for sidecar racing bikes and available for street machines.

That would be the limited production HONDA Valkyrie Rune. <|:)~

Check it out at http://www.hondamotorcycle.com/

Rune- THAT was the name for the things that I couldn't recall...thanks, Martin!

Yep, with a 1832cc six cylinder engine derived from the Valley Girl. More info on the Rune *here.

Probably from a few forthcoming posts on this thread along those lines, following a Hooligan ping, and with links to organizer and event websites [there was a pretty fair sized one in Austin Texas a couple of weekends back, and one in New Hampshire as well.]

I'd suggest one of the *neverending info* FReeper threads, along the lines of a couple of the other FReeper perpetual posts, maybe with specific event updates and reports, along the lines of the way the FReeper canteen works. But a couple of different formats are likely possible, depending on the intrerest generated.

>Well, we can rule out Harley Davidsons right off the bat, >of course.

True, a Harley can only exceed 100Mph if it is being towed by Honda that cost 1/3rd the price.

The web has tons and tons of biker event listings for your perusal. My first stop is this link, but it mostly covers central Floriduh.

http://www.borntoride.com/events/events.htm

AMA has an events schedule as do most organisations and e-zine biker oriented web sites. I'm sure we can come up with something if Martin would get off his butt and do it!!

Oh,, I see it now, that extra set of fork bars look like a stabilizer unit.

Which I *think* makes it a *trailing-link* front suspension unit rather than a leading link, but that third leg kind of throws me. And I'll happily admit that I'm no expert on front suspension designs designed much after the Brampton and Girdraulics of the 1940s, though I've been into some Cerianis. But it is at least an interesting setup; I hope those who set them up and keep them in proper adjustment for their intended use know what the he!! they're all about.

Even that radiator shroud on the Rune is reasonably well-done. I'm not much of a fan of liquid cooled motorbikes, but the Rune seems to manage to do it without looking like the back end of a refrigerator.

Yes, Joe.

Everyone who saves $10,000 by buying a bike with three times the horsepower and four times the reliability is a homo.

I can't think of any straight man would wouldn't want to compensate for his small dick size with a straight-piped, overpriced, underpowered, super-glued together, noise-making monstosity.

Thanks for outing me. I guess I can tell mom now.

Supposedly the have another one besides the rune that's making a debut, but I can't find it. The word I have is it's based on the VT 1800? and is as rad as the rune.

Things are looking up! :-)

I used to own a Bultaco Matador - a Spanish 500cc trials bike.

"Spanish Moon Shot" - yep that what it was. Angry, snarly, narley, and cantankerous - but very very quick.

Man, that rings a bell !! Back in the early 70's i was playing in the dirt with a 250XL honda & an elsinore(SP?) and that bultaco name sure sounds like it came from that era.

Am I close? Or has old age set in?

That 250 I had was a mean four-stroke single cyl dirt bike, kicked some mean butt and always got lots of air time blasting off out of a mud hole! Ran side by side with the 400's.

If I sat on it now, It would just grunt! :-)

I've never ridden a Val, much less the Rune, so I can't say firsthand. But long ago, I helped a pal shoehorn a Volkswagen engine into the frame of his Marusho, whose BMW boxer-engine copy had crapped out. Smoother even than a 750 Honda, Indian straght 4 or Ariel *Square 4*. His application was for use as a sidecar bike, but it was a lot of fun as a solo ride while setting it up.

Modern aftermarket styling, however, is not limited to Hondas, not by a long shot. I'm reminded of some of Raymond Lowey's styling designs, from the Pennsylvania Railroad's T-1 locomotive to the Studebaker Avanti...and the paint job on the first Air Force One.

You maybe mean the VTX-1800-C? [*C* for *Custom*, I expect] So far as I know, they've not yet hung a marketing name on it, but it looks like a couple of the treatments are interesting:

And of course, if it was a Norton, you can look for the leak tracks and the sore right knee... (grin)

Not if it was a P11. But then they wouldn't be getting photos of it with Big Brother's SpyCams.
