I almost said that one also...

But she usually played her cards a little closer to the bosom.

Damn close -- In fact, close enough to be called a "winner" in my book.

It was Israeli general Moshe Dayan, while visiting Vietnam with a group of U.S. military brass in the early 1970s.

I find it kind of funny that what he accepted as absolute truth is now considered an untouchable subject in the U.S.

My advice to Pat Buchanan:
"Better put some ice on that."

"If the United States really wants to generate public support for this [Vietnam] war, all they need to do is build Israeli settlements in South Vietnam."

Given the fact that Israel didn't start building settlements in any quanity till about 1977, a decade after the 67 war, and resigned as foreign minister in 79 in anger over Begin's support for settlements (Dayan opposed them), that is a very unusual quote. The US brass he told that to in the early 70's must have thought he was completely nuts.

that's why Moran, Buchanan, Matthews, Novak — and more leftists than I can count — should be ashamed. They've lost an argument. They lost it on the merits and they don't like it. In their arrogance or bitterness, they assume they couldn't have lost the fight fairly, and so they look for whispering neocons and clever Jews (or, in other contexts, nefarious oil traders). This is an ugly, ugly way to argue because it forces the opposition to prove a negative and it questions the patriotism of people who've never said an unpatriotic thing. In short, they are sore losers, and the farthest thing from beautiful.

Interesting. Thanks for the quiz and subsequent enlightment. I just thought it might be a jewish person who had said it, given your stern insistence it was not the kind of person I might think it is.

Quite frankly, they never had much to offer in the first place beyond what was rightfully seen as "cut and run at the first chance." That sort of thing has NEVER been the American tradition, and we now take things far differently than the one time we DID cut and run (Vietnam).

The neo-cons Buchanan loves to hate learned the right lesson. They presented it quite well to the American people, and the American people, to their credit, support it.

I'm going to add this - my wife dragged me to a chorale and dance show this past weekend because a male coworker she really likes begged her to go. It was a gay show, and yes, they were doing show tunes (to be fair, they did a great job, and it was funny).

They did some patriotic stuff which surprised me, given the lefty tendencies in this burg - and that says quite a bit.

There is a very real worry that, by committing itself on those three fronts, the US would not be much help if other Arab countries chose this moment to attack Israel.

I think it would be great if all the Arab troublemakers picked this moment to attack Israel. It would save us the trouble of defeating Iran, Syria, et al. ourselves. Then we'd have a real peace in the Middle East.

Sorry, I'd meant to punch the reply up higher and had been distracted at the last second - it isn't related to yours.

Since you bring up the subject, what is the political breakdown of Conservative Jews? I know that Reform Jews are all far left Democrats, and Orthodox Jews are almost all Republican, but I'd had the impression that Conservative Jews were mostly Democrat too, although more willing to take Republican stands on such issues than the Reform Jews.
