FoxNews Alert just reported that Iraqi troops have left Baghdad with heavy artillary and are heading south to the Kuwaiti boarder. More troops with SCUD missle launchers are heading west. The thought is that Saddam is about to attack our troops.

This is breaking news and details are few and far between.

Here's info on the scud variants that Iraq had in '91. The limit imposed at the end of the Gulf war was 150KM.

The Iraqis had four versions: Scud itself (180-km range), longer-range Scud (half warhead weight, extra range attained by burning all propellant immediately rather than steadily through the flight of the missile), Al Hussein (650-km, attained by reducing warhead weight to 250 kg and increasing the fuel load by 15 percent), and Al Abbas (800-km, achieved by reducing warhead weight to 125 kg, with 30 percent more fuel). Al Abbas could be fired only from static launchers; all of the others could be fired from mobile or static sites. Only the original Scud and the minimally modified version were particularly succesful."

That'd be even worse if they watched the preparation and Saddam still managed to get off a first strike.
Face it, a first strike is all Saddam has available to him, after that his entire infrastructure would be a shambles. Much better for us if we strike first and take away the bulk of his capabilities.

You may be correct that there will be no pre-emptive attack, of course, but I just don't know where people get off making comments like "Saddam might be insane, but he is not stupid". (Or "Saddam is evil but not suicidal" or any of these variants.) How exactly did a layperson like yourself gain such insight into the details of Saddam Hussein's personality?

A single Scud with a Radioactive/ Biological/ VX gas would present a very real threat to Isreal. I'd love to see the Iraqi's liberated but if anything is launched at Isreal the US had better stand back because Isreal will use some of it's Nukes. There might not be many Iraqi's who would survive.

Well, Saddam's biggest mistakes in the last two wars was that after taking his immediate objectives, Iran's major oil port city and Kuwait, he stopped and let his enemies regroup. Perhaps he's fighting the last war again?

The "no fly" zones apply to aircraft and such. I don't think ground troops and artillery are covered.

However, I will defer to someone with more expertise on the subject.
