Snowstorm was a breeze for some SUVs

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Finally, central Ohio presents a snowstorm worthy of a $40,000 sport-utility vehicle.

The SUVs plowed through the snow pretty well. Too well for some drivers, who say the occasional sport-utility cowboy left them shaken.

"They seem to have an attitude,'' said Brian Oman of southern Delaware County.

A black SUV blew past him Monday as he did 35 mph on his way to Highbanks Metro Park with his two children.

"We were sliding as it was, and he still made an effort to plow right ahead.''

Gary Cox of Columbus saw similar stunts.

"I've seen some Jeeps and SUVs just going down the street like there's no tomorrow.''

Still, when more than a foot falls and the kids want to go sledding, it's tough to beat an SUV, said Paula and Rick Clay of Columbus.

They loaded their kids, their neighbors' kids and a fleet of sleds into the back of a Suburban.

"It's perfect,'' Mrs. Clay said. "We feel a lot safer in it.''

Mr. Clay, though, knows that the power and traction lead some drivers to go faster than they should. They forget about the weight.

"You can go anywhere in them,'' he said. "You just can't stop.''

Nick and Kim Gulyassy of Clintonville decided they could live with less traction and more money.

"It was using too much gas,'' Mrs. Gulyassy said of their four-wheel-drive vehicle. "Now we have a Honda Odyssey -- with a snow shovel in the back.''

The SUV mystique probably survived the storm intact. After all, when a Level 3 snow emergency hit southern Ohio, people weren't turning to four-door sedans.

Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster used a Dodge Durango, Nissan Xterra and Kia Sportage to shuttle employees to and from work on Saturday and Sunday.

"I'm absolutely amazed at how easily I got around,'' said David Bickham, a hospital spokesman who owns the Sportage.

"I've been to Hideaway Hills, the back roads of Sugar Grove, to Lithopolis. I've seen a lot of central Ohio in the past few days.''

The snow helped sell at least one Hummer yesterday, said Tom Bentley, general sales manager of the Hummer of Columbus dealership, 4300 W. Dublin-Granville Rd.

"We were just dying for a day like this,'' Bentley said.

A customer who said he was tired of winter watched the Hummer navigate, then bought one for $53,200.

4wd helps you go, all cars have 4 wheel stop. Still, think of how many fatal accidents would have happend had everyone been forced to drive Chevy Cheovettes.

Yeah, I saw only SUVs on the streets for the last few days here in MD with 24 plus inches of snow. They performed a civil duty by taking hospital personnel to work and back, BUT, most of them still had a foot of snow on their roofs! Folks, clean off the top of your SUV and cars! A following car will appreciate it!

The most current attack is from the right.

Please explain.

The type of tires you have on that SUV mean more in snow. Most City SUV's have passenger tread plus some are only rear wheel drive.

If your SUV was totally worthless its because of the DRIVER, not the vehicle.

Most folks who don't see snow on a regular basis absolutely freak out when they have to drive in crappy conditions.

Snow my butt. Rain freaks 'em completely.

Just wait.

The next law that will be passed will outlaw "Hate-Speed."

"Hate-Speed" is the act of an SUV owner with a 'superior attitude' passing a smaller car.

Please explain.

The most current attack has been spearheaded by Arriana Huffinton and a group of other people generally acknowledged to be on the right. Conservatives supposedly, whatever that means anymore.

They have commissioned and paid for the ads on TV and in the print media.

My '94 Chevy Blazer (w/ the big engine) goes great in the snow (we got 2.5 feet here in the mountains of north Jersey). But as I explained to the wife, it stops just as well as a two-wheel drive vehicle ;-).

If you use your SUV to get through without worrying about getting there in a hurry, they are great in the snow. Just because the 4WD can propel the car faster, does not mean that you should drive faster. Your maximum speed should be set by your stopping distance. In snow over ice, maximum speed should be no greater than 15 mph, no matter what you drive.

But the great thing about and SUV with decent tires is that you can plug along at 15 mph pretty much through anything. I do the same thing in a rear-wheel-drive station wagon, which just takes a little more finesse.

Huffington is as much on the right these days (that is, for the past year or so) as Hillary. You'll have to do better than that.

We lived in Minnesota for 16 years and only once did heavy snow prevent me from making the run into St. Paul in my Caprice. This was the great Holloween snowstorm of 1992 or 1993...We fired up our snowmobiles and had a ball. I think we got 25 inches of heavy wet snow and a good overnight breeze to whip it into drifts.

Conservatives supposedly, whatever that means anymore.

I think your qualifier is most accurately applied.

Arriana Huffinton and a group of other people generally acknowledged to be on the right

As others have pointed out, Huffington is not on the Right. I haven't read anything by her in the past 4 years that I even remotely agreed with. She's an idiot. Of course she opposes SUVs.

I don't have to do "better" than anything. The people who ran the ads are generally acknowledged to be on the right. The right ain't what it used to be.

This place used to be conservative, now it's Republican, go figure.

Perhaps not, hard to tell anymore.

LOL, is she an idiot because you don't agree with her?

FWIW, I think she's an idiot too, and I always have, not just the last few years.
