The Dems stepped in it, big time. Hispanics have been calling in to Rush---he took four in a row, and said he could have taken 100 today---who are outraged over the Dems' treatment of Estrada.

Every one claimed to be either a Dem or a "former" Dem, with a couple of them virtually switching today. They ALL spoke highly of Bush. The idiot Dems have no idea how badly this is hurting them!!!

Just so you recall, you brought this up in the context that BECAUSE they spoke Spanish they were somehow illegitimate as citizens. Don't deny it.

And my point is, our nation has NEVER been as "anglicized" as many here want to think. We have studies that the assimilation rate of Hispanics is TWICE as fast into the "mainstream" English culture as GERMANS or IRISH.

Germans retained their "Germanity" FAR longer and clung to it with far more tenacity than the Hispanics have clung to their Mexican-ness.

Maybe, but I can tell you that the psychology of our culture is such that native-born Americans of any color are NOT going to be cotton-pickers (unless it is their own farm) or door-openers, or hotel maids (unless they are VERY expensive hotels).

All your "first hand" experience with illegals, and "inside" knowledge of the American psyche aside, does not erase the fact that breaking the law to enter this, or any country is wrong, and we should , if we had any self respect, enforce that law.

Then we should have a temporary guest worker program that lets in those who work at those jobs in ---legally and safely --if we in fact need those workers ---but in the region I'm in there are many more uninsured pregnant women than farm workers coming over. Half the babies born in the county hospital here are to women from Mexico who come over to get free hospitalization and doctor care ---PLUS easy citizenship and many welfare benefits like WIC, food stamps, HeadStart etc. Many never will pick a tomato.

Go to Williamsburg VA and at the motels there and in town almost ALL the maids and help are either whites or black.
Hell here in the suburbs of Phila we have married white house wifes who do part time work as house maids and house cleaners

I've seen studies that show every illegal costs $50,000 more than they contribute, if you add up everything. Mexico is playing us, and Bush for a fool, and getting away with it.

Maybe you aren't reading the posts carefully enough, or, certainly, reading between the lines. In fact, there are many here who DO see all Hispanics as welfare recipients or otherwise lazy bums.

Now, I don't know how many times I can say this---and this is the problem any time you try to discuss this rationally with people---but I do not favor illegal immigration. I favor legal immigration. That is what I FAVOR.

What is reality is that we are going to have illegal immigration under almost any circumstances. The border is too long, and (let's imagine welfare no longer exists) the incentives to work are too great. The question then becomes, how do we handle the residue of illegal immigrants that continue to come in?

I say it is a pipe dream to think that you can pass any law against any employer that will prohibit the hiring of such people and really try to make it stick. I don't have an easy answer, but I know what some of the answers aren't. Thinking that we can just "close down the border" will not work. We can do better. We can improve a lot. But the best thing we can do is to ditch the mentality that all Hispanics are illegals here for welfare and work to convince LEGAL AMERICAN HISPANICS that they have a stake in helping to police the system.

I actually don't have much against those illegals who are really here working hard for low wages ---it's just I see relatively few of them but large numbers of the other kinds. It also seems unfair that the farmworker is more likely to get deported than the unwed mother collecting her handouts because that anchor baby lets her stay and apply for welfare. A trip to the county hospital here can be revealing.

I was listening when the lady called into Rush madder then hell. She said she is fed up with the Democrats telling us we can only have a "White/Black President." (Refering to Clinton being called the first Black President) Mad as hell that we can only have a "White/Hispanic Justice" on the Supreme Court, because the Dems stated that Estrada wasn't Hispanic enough. She said she watched them on C-Span last night and could not believe what she was seeing. How the Democrats were acting.

She said she had been a Democrat all her life basically because that was what her family had always been. She will never vote Democrat again. She said the Democrats have never done a thing for them, nor does she want them to. They have always worked for what they have.

Rush says he wants the Dems to keep it up because the tide is turning.

I agree that there will always be "some" illegals getting in, but we could, if we made a committment, reduce that number substantially. By not doing that, and leaving our borders wide open, which is what we are doing now, we are, as a nation, committing suicide.

Also Reyes is the head of the Hispanic Caucus in Congress ---he was the head of Border patrol who put Operation Blockade and Operation Hold-the-Line into place ---which made him very popular with Hispanics on this side of the border and not very popular with the Mexican government which was outraged. He was elected to Congress as a Democrat after Operation Hold-the-Line made him so well liked in his hispanic district.

We agree on that. I was fully behind Prop 187 (?) in CA. But I do think that there is an air of unreasonability that creeps into these discussions that we can just "shut down" the borders.

Obviously (do I really need to say this?) we should not be giving either free medical care or education to illegal immigrants of any race. I think the best way to police this, outside of having schools refuse to admit anyone who can't prove citizenship, is to get the Hispanic community to help by showing it's in THEIR interest to shut down this cross-border trade. That is where I think conservatism needs to focus.
