Just so you recall, you brought this up in the context that BECAUSE they spoke Spanish they were somehow illegitimate as citizens. Don't deny it.
And my point is, our nation has NEVER been as "anglicized" as many here want to think. We have studies that the assimilation rate of Hispanics is TWICE as fast into the "mainstream" English culture as GERMANS or IRISH.
Germans retained their "Germanity" FAR longer and clung to it with far more tenacity than the Hispanics have clung to their Mexican-ness.
I actually don't have much against those illegals who are really here working hard for low wages ---it's just I see relatively few of them but large numbers of the other kinds. It also seems unfair that the farmworker is more likely to get deported than the unwed mother collecting her handouts because that anchor baby lets her stay and apply for welfare. A trip to the county hospital here can be revealing.
