What is reality is that we are going to have illegal immigration under almost any circumstances

How bout we take all the $$$$ and manpower we waste and pour down the rat hole of the insane WOD and put them to use in protecting our borders
Border may be long but there are only so many crossing points

You don't live in the southwest, do you? No, there are limitless crossing points. In Arizona, you can cross anywhere. You would need armies like we have never seen, on full time alert, to shut down a single state. Won't happen.

We should make the effort, on principle, just like we should have a "war on drugs" on principle. But in the end, both are dependent on the DEMAND side, not supply.

I think a guest-worker program would do a lot to end the demand side, especially if you kick in some favorable consideration toward citizenship at the end of x years working. That would a) increase the number of legal workers who have a stake in keeping out the illegals, and b) provide "fairness" to those who want some chance to become citizens.
