In your kit, how about a rifle and 1,000 rounds of ammo?

I hesitate to suggest it because some people interpret it as macho BS or wild paranoia, but I'd strongly recommend getting firearms training and having something in the way of personal protection in the mix, even if it's only pepper spray (and I wouldn't recommend limiting it to that - you can't kill game with pepper spray).

That looks like a standard weekend camping list. Sure is a lot of stuff. By the way, 3 days of stuff is optimistic. If it gets that bad, we will be displaced for months or years.
And, . . . , how many are actually taking this seriously? One percent?

Thank you, Utah Girl, good post.

Do I really have to get feminine hygiene products? Checking out at the store is SO embarassing.

In all seriousness - probably a couple pints of decent whiskey and maybe a couple cartons of cigarettes to use as trade goods. Some ballpoint pens and paper might be nice. A .22 cal rifle and ammunition might help. Coffee (freeze dried) and tea bags would be good. And, if you really think that matters will hit the fan, lockpicks. (Yes, you CAN buy them on the internet!)

As I read through the list, I noticed how much it looked like the one a Mormon co-worker forwarded me after The Eleventh - then I saw who had posted it. Several things you both left off your lists, though I can't imagine why:
;-)
coffee, coffee creamer, cigarettes, and whiskey

All this stuff is getting way out of hand (Dark Winter, etc...). There will be no attack that would threaten civilization or anything else. Maybe a car bomb in Europe.
My greatest fear is that they'll detonate a bomb containing a small amount of radioactive waste. I'm not afraid of the waste since its basically harmless. I'm afraid the media will hype the story to the moon. The media is capable of terrorizing Americans far more than Al Qaeda.

Thanks for the post. A FEMA document, "Are You Ready? A Guide to Citizen Preparedness," can be found at
http://www.fema.com/areyouready/ . This can be read as Adobe PDF files or read directly into a word processing program. It covers many kinds of emergencies beyond terrorist attack, but the "Emergency Planning and Disaster Supply" section is very useful.

Utah Girl, I ask this sincerely. Where will you go with all these things? I don't live in the U.S., so may I picture you driving off to some wilderness spot?
Also, don't forget cash in small bills and change. You also need to add to the list a revolver or pistol with pleanty of ammo. A shotgun or rifle would be good, too.

The problem is this "plan" involves fleeing civilization, which might be necessary, but you're only heading out for 3 days. If the feces hits the rotating device so hard you need to get away from civilization completely you'll need at least a month. Not being one that believes in running for the hills my 72 hour survival kit is in my pockets: car keys, credit cards. If things get so bad they won't do me any good I hope I'm already dead.

A couple of other posters mentioned this already, but I'll mention it again because it is such a glaring omission (At least to me). Where are the firearms and ammunition? One M-16 or AK-47 (or semiauto version and all should be same either M16 OR AK47) for each family member old enough to shoot. I believe one of the other posters mentioned 1000 rnds. I'd like to say 1000 per weapon. It isn't likely that you will have terrorists storming your house, but there are plenty of people who like to take advantage of unsettled situations (note the riots and/or looting that occur in extended power outages), and it's best if you have a way to deal with them. Permanently.

Utah Girl, need to add laptop with Internet connection to that 72 hour kit. Otherwise how will we stay informed?
