I have some hope for the Russians. One of my skating coaches is Russian. Recently, I was in a conditioning class he was teaching and the topic came up about meetings. It seems the former rink managers used to have regular, interminable meetings (I didn't tell him that's what my life is like, though. LOL). Finally, my coach couldn't stand it anymore and asked the manager, "Why do you have all these meetings? Are you communists?" I just about died laughing.

But here's the sad thing. One of the kids in the class said, "what a communist?" I kid you not! My coach got this very sad look on his face and said, "It's a very bad thing." Then, we got back to work.

Then there was the story he told me on Saturday. He used to be an engineer w/the Soviet space program. It used to drive him crazy that he would go to work every day at the secure compound where his office was. A lot of times he'd finish his project for the day and have nothing else to do. He was expected to sit at his desk and twiddle his thumbs when what he wanted to do was go around to other areas and learn new things. Apparently, it caused huge problems between him and his supervisor and was one of the reasons he stopped being an engineer and became a skating coach.

Well, I've gone on quite a bit about my coach. I just think he is so cool and if he's anything to judge by, there is hope for the Russians.
