It was nothing to lose a few tiles early in the game. That was a common problem when they first started flying the shuttle.
It is possible that the ice that hit the left wing on lift-off could have caused a zipper effect when they hit atmosphere. That would have caused the rise in temp on left side until wiring either melted or broke.
Yes, wheel doors are "dogged" just like an airliner.

The ones that asked about flt. data recorder are beyond weenys they are ignoramous buttlicks.
To: Ramius
I thought there was some comment yesterday about the parameters being normal during the actual landing phase (I guess it's like the brakes heating up) but being anomolous in free flight.

So far, the only new information is the roll-trim anomaly.

What I got out of it was the wiring for the flaps pass THROUGH that wheel well. So, if there was a problem with heat, the computers were probably trying to correct the problem and the flaps WERE NOT getting the signals! If something DID fall off over California, it HAD to be from UNDER the wind. That piece of foam hit the TOP of the wing on take off.

I caught that! I had the same thought yesterday about Astronauts and God.
I read a book as a kid about Armstrong and he said basically if you didnt believe in a God BEFORE you went up in space....you would believe after you got out in space.

Some of these questions are just idiotic...I am surprised the NASA reps don't lose it. Much kudos for NASA

60 degrees over 5 minutes doesn't strike me as very much.Taken by itself - thi does not mean much.
In the whole scheme of things - this might mean everything though ...

With an increase in left wing drag.....and banking at a 57 degree left bank to slow the shuttle down......could that have caused it to tumble out of control.. Maybe, but at approx. the point of loss of comms during the flight, the shuttle starts into several complex 'braking' maneuvers. The combo of that, plus the unusual flight compensation likely already underway could have caused a tumble. </ speculation>

Shuttle was already flying so as to minimize the heat on itself...nothing further could have been done to minimize heat...

Look friend, you're approaching the LA times category with that question.
The shuttle always rolls on re-entry to dissipate energy. S-turns, up to 80 degrees, four times.
To: Jewels1091
Foam/ice hit the underside. On takeoff, vehicle rolls over on its back.

Dittmore said that the sensors on the right wing in tyhe smae places showed only a 15 degree increase as opposed to the 60 degree increase on the left......
To: _Jim
Agreed. Depends on just how unusual that is, or what other things might be inferred.

Finally a good question about the "additional 32 seconds of data" which may be available.
Will look at data frame by frame and try to retrieve it...
To: Jewels1091
That piece of foam hit the TOP of the wing on take off. Slo-mo video showes it hitting leading edge of wing, then going under the wing.
