No...he said that a loss of a single tile, even in a couple of spots, would NOT cause the loss of the vehicle...

That's correct, that was my WRONG analysis of the video. Now they are talking about sensors in the TRAILING edge of the wing, near the aileron...the moveable flap in the end of the wing...

In my experience with telemetry, this just means that the sensor is sending binary 0's and is likely disconnected.

Because the sensors went out is SEQUENCE, it support the zipper tile theory.

Also the craft was trying to compensate for left wing drag...

Lost tile != loss of vehicle?

Almost. I think the comment was Single lost tile != loss of vehicle.

LA Times asking totally stupid question: "Did they carry a cockpit voice recorder and a flight data recorder?"

snopercod's advice to the LA times: read a basic book on the shuttle like you might find at your local elementary school, then you won't embarass yourself with questions like this.

I don't remember them saying clearly that there was a heat problem.

They were pretty clear that they were merely *losing* readings, not getting anomalous readings.

I wonder about the 60 degree increase mentioned above. 60 degrees over 5 minutes doesn't strike me as very much.

"Is this from a separate low frequency channel?"

I don't know the details, but yeah - multiple data streams.

But they also said that the wiring on the trailing edge sensor and the leading edge sensor come together near the wheel well. I think what they're saying is that the wheel well seems to be the center of the problems.

Very unlikely. The software that runs the flight control portion of the shuttle is some of the most well written and tested software on the planet. I have several software dev mags that cover the org that rights this software. They are the best in the world when it comes to this sort of thing.

With an increase in left wing drag.....and banking at a 57 degree left bank to slow the shuttle down......could that have caused it to tumble out of control..

Several other reporters embarassing themselves with their total ignorance here...

ABC Chicago: "Any evidence that the crew knew there was a problem?"

Answer: Crew was monitoring their systems. No evidence that the crew knew anything.

snopercod: NASA has not released the ICOM voice tapes. Why not?

Let your friends and co-workers get ripped apart at 12Kmph and tell me how you do in a press conference a little more than 24 hours later.
