Okay, but is it just me or do anyone of you find the NASA press conference too emotional? Yes, I understand their grief, but I do expect better from professionals.

If you must, flame away.

I remember when the Columbia was first launched. The announcers on the telly said it was a "remarkable" scientific achievement. I also remember the Challenger disaster - it was a huge shock and surprise. But I do also remember how President Reagan came through on that day.

President Bush did similarly well - though I have a feeling he is in tears as much as anyone.

Regards, Ivan

don't you suppose that a wing coming apart would have created an aerodynamic instability an order or two of magnitude more noticeable than an overheating of the tires?

The NASA people probably knew the astronauts best; I can understand them being more than a touch misty.

"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said. "

OMIGOSH! How heart rending to think that someone who supposedly loves God could be so heartless! But that is the name of the enemy we are learning to fight, isnt it?

Yes, I understand, but we are seeing tears more than receiving information. I was under the impression that this was the reason for the press conference.

Dave,

It should surprise nobody that shuttle debris sales (or claims to that effect) are already appearing on eBay. I am contacting eBay to ascertain their policy on such sales.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2909722097&category=1468

"Bits of machinery were found strewn across the city of Nacogdoches on Saturday, hours after space shuttle Columbia broke apart over Texas. Happy bidding !"

------ End Forwarded Message

(eBay has already killed the auction.)

Don't want to flame you, I just don't think you understand just how reaponsible these people feel for those who fly up there. They DO feel like they are family. And they are all asking themselves 'What could I have done to prevent this?'
They are crushed and wounded. They can't help expressing this - only hours after the event.

Then they should refrain from holding a press conference and grieve in private.

I have on my telly in the background - Sky News is spewing information. NASA can be forgiven, I think, if they break down a bit. Sometimes professionalism gets swept away in emotion.

I noticed too that President Bush stopped himself from crying towards the end of his brief speech.

I'm always in awe when I go out at night and see the sky dotted with twinkling stars.

Amen. Clear winter nights with snow on the ground....silence. My father used to point out the constellations and stars on such nights. Now that he's gone, I still look up at the warm Florida winter skies and hear my father naming the stars.

Well, I think its much the same as asking a local police officer to be non-emotional in investigating an accident scene where his best friend just died. I understand your point, but not sure these guys could ever meet that level of emotional distance.

Were does this fit in, historicaly, as to national shocks over the last 62 years? 1) Attack on Pearl Harbor 2) 9/11 3) JFK assasinated 4) Reagan shot 5) Challenger 6) Columbia Comments anyone?

You left off the Iranian hostage crisis and the bungled rescue mission in the desert. Also, what about the Cuban Missle Crisis. That was the only time I ever feared for my life. Also, TET offensive?
