A Few of FR's Finest...Every Day - Week in Review 1-25,26-03

A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

To Our FReeper FRiends: We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our spotlight on various FReepers. We thought we'd kick back on the weekends and simply review those who've been featured during the week. If you missed seeing them and want to say hello to them now, feel free to click on the link to that particular thread. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today and tomorrow, please feel free to do that also. One of us will always be around to see the welcome mat is still out, and maybe even put fresh flowers on the table. :)

1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar.
2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me an FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~ Mixer

Bad guys lose in Texas...

Crime-scene photo unsettling to some - photo
of dead home intruder killed by home owner in Dallas

It's not gory. The guy shot the intruder and the intruder made it out to the front of the house by the front bushes and they had to leave him there until forensics could arrive and do their work.

I'd post the pic here, but thought I better not - did a link instead...

LOL. Judith Polgar is a chess GRANDMASTER, actually! She just broke 2700 -- very high rating.

she drew against Anand today -- so she's still half a point behind. If she won her board in the last round and Anand lost his tomorrow (unlikely), she could still win.

But as things stand, Mrs. Polgar (she is married) will come in second.

Which is perfectly respectable.

I fixed DK sausage, grands biscuits, eggs and gravy. To go with it "real" butter and home made strawberry jam.

"My Mom and Dad lived in Fairbanks for two years..."

You no doubt have heard them try to explain the sight - or lack of sight - when there is ice fog!

When it is well below zero and the normally dry air contains tiny moisture particles, the combination can create the phenomenon known as ice fog.
They are literally frozen, suspended in the air wherever they are, reducing visibility tremendously.
That makes it different from an ordinary whiteout in a blizzard, snowflakes moving downward.

I have a clipping from the Fairbanks newspaper with a panoramic view from an airplane of the entire city, which sits in a basin, with ice fog obscuring all but a few tops of buildings!

Grasping that vision, think about driving in it.
When we lived in quarters on Eielson AFB, finally, the buildings were white - roads were white - the AIR that day was white soup! and I needed to go to the commissary.

Knowing not many would (be dumb enough to) make the attempt with no definition of roadway, and not many vehicles could even get through the deep snow that day, I had a Chevy Greenbrier van with the engine in the rear that could make it with ease.
Aha! Advantage, LadyX!

Picture Mad Mama going for milk and bread or else - window rolled down and head out to improve (?) orientation.
'Determined look' set on face, gauging a point exactly halfway between the two sides with buildings, praying the road was somewhere beneath the wheels.
Of course it didn't much matter with the curbs, etc. buried way beneath the snow accumulation, so I wasn't really taking much of a risk - unless some other fool was doing the same thing, coming toward me!

It was only about half a mile to the destination, and there was nary a car in the whole big lot.

Mission Accomplished.

There are many such triumphs to be had there..:)))
