Technology might make socialism actually work at some point. This is a hideous thing to consider, but just as sci-fi movies have pointed out for several decades, productivity could be increased with computer-triggered negative and positive reinforcement. Pain would be the negative stimulus. Some highly addictive government mandated drug would be doled out as a positive stimulus.
On the other side of the coin, technology also is causing rapid attitude changes in society. Just imagine, the Cult of the Sacred Cow, a group of hackers, is giving software to Chinese dissidents, enabling to read what we just posted.

More than interesting, excellent find.

Yup, interesting read.
But be mindful, as Louis Blanc (the French Socialist) said, stressing the so-called "Prinicple of Need" - that is, equal compensation irrespective of ability or productivity. [The Utopians, Fabians, ... would be proud of that summary.]
This "principle" is often stated today as "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
Also, today, in the United States is practiced that specific branch of the above, called: LIBERALISM. Or, the true and only purpose of government is "To help people."

Unlikely, but true. Boortz talks about this regularly.

When the group votes to force the individual into group servitude, democracy becomes slavery or tyranny. Which is what the group will inevitably do, because such is the nature of democracy. That is why our country is supposed to be a republic, not a democracy, which IS mob rule whether it is tyrannical or not. What the author describes as possible results of a "bad" democracy are actually the inevitable results of all democracy in the long run, and the reason why it ought to be avoided altogether (the only option in some places, at least for a period of time) or put in a reasonable system of checks and balances with the elite, as in a republic. Other than that caveat, this article is excellent, and I thank you for posting it.

Technology might make socialism actually work at some point. If we can replicate everything like in star trek and can have robots do whatever work is nessacary then sure.

Technology might make socialism actually work at some pointNope - Not now. Not ever. Look at it from the viewpoint of the last 50 years. Did socialism work 50 years ago? No. Does socialism work today? No. Are workers more productive today than they were 50 years ago? Absolutely; they are much more productive, but socialism is a worse failure today than it was 50 years ago.
The problem with socialism is not that there aren't enough resources. It is that there is no upper limit to human greed. The parasitic classes (including the politicians and bureaucrats) always want more. They are driven by envy of their betters (and their betters are almost everyone). It doesn't matter how much they get at the expense of someone else, they want it all.

Excellent article, but too long and serious for most freepers.
