"Yeah, actually, he tried to take power by force twice in the early 1990s before the people stupidly elected him."And the US goes in now, to a sovereign country, the voters of which legally elected Chavez (no matter how stupidly), thus interfering in Venezualan law....why, exactly?

I don't see anything wrong with just wanting their oil. When they have something else we might need let us know.

If there are some gunrunners lurking, there's lots of money to be made in Venezuela.

No actually what I said was Last I looked Chavez wasn't the one carrying out armed coups in the middle of the night. which means the most recent history if I am not mistaken. How far back must my last look be?
Ah, ok. So intellectual dishonesty it is.

Hey, I never said we should go in. The Venezuelans themselves should clean up this mess. I believe they will. Our job should be to prevent other outside forces (read Cuba, Brazil, China, Colombia, or Peru) from going in to support Chavez. And you know they're going to try, even if it's just on the sly.

Gee whiz! Do you have to invade Venezuela too in addition to Korea and Iraq, oops let's not forget that budding nuclear power, Brazil. How do intend to pay for all this? Let me guess: the taxpayers!
To: Antoninus
No at all. It proves my point..Latin America is a ding-dong political affair. Getting involved is pointless and useless if it does not threaten America's vital interest (borders life and property). The best hope is to end the cycle of coups in Latin America by supporting (through example and diplomatic encouragement) constitutional institutions and constitutionally governed change in governments.

The Venezualan business owners have been moving money off shore for at least the past 15 years and have been trying to liquidate assets as well because of the deteriorating conditions there. These are some of the same people who lost assets in Cuba when Castro took over and re established themselves in Venezuela. Once these types abandon Venezuala its doomed.

Was Geraldo present? He's down there as if he's covering mardi gras! His commentary diminishes the seriousness of the protests.

Evidently to some....ignorance is bliss. Venzuela is very much the world's business.
To: Antoninus
"And you know they're going to try, even if it's just on the sly."Ah...THAT we can probably help with. Another way we can help is to refuse to fund or aid another UN (hide your wives and daughters) incited, Bosnia-style "peacekeeping" mission should Koffi forget that he doesn't rule the world yet and order one.

Greetings Destro FReepers, et al:
Funded how? Are those American firms that negotiated for pipeline deals through Afghanistan also part of the "Axis of Evil"? Interesting angle Destro.
A.N.S.W.E.R. this: Do you know of a better industry for Afghani people seeking gainful employment? Seems if you want to build a successful oil pipeline; it ought to start with someone who knows a thing or two about pipeline building.

Basically every Cuban who came to America has been a good and hard working citizen.
When Castro emptied his jails and sent the really bad people up here that changed the picture somewhat. Everyone that comes ashore now needs to be investigate and the Cuban/American community needs to watch them like hawks. If they have any reasons why these newer ones should not be here, they sould let the authorities know why.
Some of the 3rd and 4th generation post Castro revolution became socialists or semi communists. The Elian nightmare woke up a lot of them if not most of them.
We moved to the west coast in the early 70's and there aren't that many Cuban Americas out here in the bay area. I can say that I never met a single one on the East Coast that I didn't like and respect. Any of them would have been welcome neighbors.

Ive never been gung ho on Iraq Saudi Arabia yes. I don't favor invasion of Venezuala just seeing that a few rpgs and AK-47s come the way of the anti Chavez forces also giving some military officiers a few well placed bribes. I do not think for a second we should tolerate another nuclear power in our own hemisphere.

From the show Geraldo had on last night Chavez is already recruiting Columbians. They are already there to boost the Chavez supporters.
To: Grampa Dave
Never fear, Jimmy Carter just arrived to help! They'll have nukes by the end of the week!

Good help the poor people there if Carter shows up.
Chavez will be out of the closet as a full blown communist and will announce that he is working on Nuclear Weapons as per your reply.

"He should garner another Peace Prize for his fine work in Venezuela to date."
Carter has been named Castro's Minister of Communist Expansionism in the western hemisphere. A job he accepted with enthusiasm.
