Why black conservatives are maligned (we have a shot to change how blacks in America will vote)

Why black conservatives are maligned

TNA News with Commentary Thursday 1 February 2001

Bryant Pearson, writing in The Black Turncoat Forum BBS, asks why conservative blacks are so maligned simply for having a point of view different from the ‘normal’ black person. He wrote: “When we conservative blacks speak up for what we believe why are we treated like we’ve done something wrong. I believe that we have a shot to change how blacks in America will vote in 4 years if we get together and work hard at changing the minds of many in our community.”

Bryant, we are maligned because all liberals instinctively feel that no black person is capable of such independent thought or activity. When we encounter a liberal black, he succumbs to the playground mentality and thinks of us as self hating Uncle Toms or just ‘acting white’. If that doesn’t reveal how he really feels about independent minded blacks, nothing does.

They are actually envious of our ability to develop and articulate ideas, philosophies and actions apart from the ‘normal’ black culture, and must try to make themselves more important by trying to make us less relevant. Even white liberals, when opposed by conservative blacks, tend to think of us as ‘fronts’ for some white person or group, or they consider us as tokens. Worst of all, they consider liberal blacks as needing ‘leaders’. I have never heard anyone mention a white leader or a black conservative leader.

The fact is neither black nor white conservatives need leaders, and the same for white liberals, but black liberals do, and most people think that all blacks do. This is the myth initiated by white liberals and perpetuated by black ones. What we black conservatives must do is become proactive in spreading the conservative message. We must speak and act ahead of the curve, before someone else has begun the battle that we know must be joined long before they do.

We must not only let blacks know that we are here and we are viable, but we must let everyone know that not all of us dance to the same tune as played by the race hustling poverty pimps, otherwise known as black leaders. If you look at the ‘leaders’ in the white community, you see many individuals with leadership skills acting together to achieve a common goal. There is no one particular ‘leader’, other than the one(s) chosen by the participants themselves to run the show, whereas black liberals will accept whatever loudmouth or show off who declares himself or is declared by the media as ‘black leader’ (read my own declaration written in 1994).

The at large conservative community, black and white has many leaders, each with his or her own special contribution to the effort.

Black liberals are quite content to sit by and watch someone else take the initiative, fight the battle, and tell us all about it in the process. Black conservatives must take care not to allow others to take the initiative for a battle that we must lead, and that is the battle to establish ourselves as not just followers of some white guy who is fighting for us. If we fall into that trap, then we are no different from the black liberals, which puts all of us into the same boat, which is that none of us are capable of carrying our own weight in our own battle.

And one thing that makes so little sense to me is that most blacks I know and have ever known are strong, Bible-reading Christians, and I fail to understand how anyone can be a Christian AND a democRAT. They seem mutually exclusive to me.

The problem is that the core message that we've been dealing with over the years from the leftists have their source (at least in the black community) in the pulpit!

The unspoken mantra over the years is that you don't dare challenge what is brought forth to you from the pulpit! And where do the real problem children of this whole message hide? In the pulpit!

Rev. Jesse Jackson; Rev. Al Sharpton; and on and on. Of course, we ask the appropriate questions, but it's a bit difficult to counter what has been historically drummed in and reenforced over the years.

Historically, the truth, the knowledge, the education was supported and reenforced by the church in general and the local preacher in particular. If your pastor says it; if your pastor says that this other preacher is saying the right things, then it must be OK. And since most preachers feel that Jackson & Sharpton are doing the "right things," then they pass that message on to their congregation.

This works in the reverse as well. There are some conservative black ministers whose message is starting to get out around the nation: KirbyJon Caldwell from Houston, Carlton Pearson from Tulsa, Fred Price in Los Angeles (whose television program, "Ever Increasing Faith," is seen nationally on TBN and on other stations) are the core of decent numbers of black preachers who are starting to see the light and who are telling their congregations the truth.

It takes time; we are still learning to crawl in that regard. But we'll get there. Everyone has to be patient, but vigilant. Be willing to work. When questions are asked, you can point to men like that; to men like Kevin Martin (Trueblackman); to men like Shannon Reeves (Party Secretary for the California GOP and president of the Oakland NAACP).

Most of all, keep the faith. We will survive and succeed.

That is absolutely true. What I don't get is why they allow it. Why are they not insulted by it? Wouldn't you be?

A large part of the problem is that fear has been instilled in black America.

Fear, which makes us out to be the "big, bad, boogieman." Fear which has some intelligent, smart black folks truly believing that the GOP has a goal of putting blacks back into slavery. Do you realize that most of the black middle class finds it hard to consider themselves in that mainstream group? That as a result of the innuendo and lies told on television and radio daily, that they feel that they will not benefit from the tax cuts proposed by the Administration?

Those lies are propagated by the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons of the world; and by the mainstream media who uses that medium to continue to portray us in that fashion. And as long as we allow those lies to go out unchecked, the perception will continue to be reeforced in the minds of black America.

We have no business allowing Jesse Jackson to spread our message. I don't want that, do you? But as sure as I'm writing this, he is doing exactly that, because we don't counter his lies; we don't call him on the carpet for destroying our name and image in the mainstream. We certainly call Hillary! on it when she does; we call mealy mouthed columnists like Arriana Huffington on it when she does it - why can't we do it with Jesse Jackson?

And I don't mean the insults flying like we all do (and yes, I'm just as guilty of it as the next guy). I'm talking about addressing his lies point by point, as he tells them, to the audience he's addressing. Taking the messages directly into his face and daring him to keep it up. It's not pretty, but it's gotta be done.

Why are they not insulted? Because of fear and anger. Am I insulted? Damn right. Every damned day. And that's why I do what I do to counter it.

Why are the lies allowed to go unchecked? I don't mean just the Jesse Jackasses and Al Sharptons either. I don't get why Republicans are not out there on the offense exposing the rampant lies of the racist RATS and calling them on them. It's not like there is a shortage of them. Why are WE not raising these issues in the national media instead of waiting for them to raise and then running and cowering, once again intimidated into going along to "prove" that WE are not the party of racism?

Those are questions for the party leadership. The strategy must be included as a part of the direction for the party in and of itself, not only on a state/local level, but on a national level. But until this point is realized, the problems will remain.

But know this - Where I can, I do ask the questions and issue the challenges. That is how I plant the seeds in the minds of many - simply by asking the questions. Those who listen and hear what I'm saying begin to connect the dots; begin to logically analyze the situation themselves. I'm the Johnny Appleseed, if you will.

And with dedicated folks like yourself working hard to expose the lies, things will change. I don't think that most people LIKE being lied to. Maybe I am too naive, but I think that when people realize they've been being lied to that most get angry about it. Then the question arises, will they remain loyal to the party or will they start looking for a better way?

Keep up the good work. And don't dismiss the idea of running for office.

I wonder, does it require a black person to counter the lies, or can a white speaker reach as many and as effectively?

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Jan. 9 — State Rep. Johnny Ford said Thursday he will switch from the Democratic to the Republican Party, making him the first black Republican in the Alabama Legislature in at least a century.

"I am doing this because I strongly feel that in Alabama we need to put partisan politics behind us and join hands as one," said Ford, who quietly supported Republican Gov.-elect Bob Riley during last year's election.

Ford said he planned to make an official announcement at a news conference within the next week. The former Tuskegee mayor has represented Macon County in the Legislature for five years.

Ford will be the first black Republican in the Legislature since Reconstruction, according to state archives. Democrats will still hold a 63-42 majority in the House.

"I don't think that real equality can exist until we stop differentiating between black, white, hispanic, etc. and start referring to all citizens as Americans."

"We" would ALL rather do without all the hyphens -- trouble is the hyphen works. It works in the context of it's extortion potential as we have seen.

It is understood to be part and parcel a voting bloc; In theory, the difference in a candidates margin of victory or defeat; a company's margin of profit or loss.

As long as there are politicians and CEOs willing to cave in to blackmail while pandering to any group represented by very LOUD and obnoxious "spokespeople," there will remain forevermore the "hyphen."

Yes, and it is a requirement.

I can yell until my head falls off about the lies. But I will be easily dismissed. However, if prominent whites brought these lies out front and center, it would reach a larger audience and force the issue to be looked at seriously.

Sure, charges of "racism" will abound. But we know this going into the situation. Still, get these lies out in the open and keep hammering away at them. It will bear fruit.

Of course there are plenty of white racists too -- but they wouldn't last 5 minutes in a presidential race. Just ask Trent Lott what happens if a white emits even a whiff of racism.

You got that right. I think that double standard is what infuriates people more than the racisim itself.

Although I agree with your sentiment, it is a faulty one. In fact, NOT all Republicans are Christian or even Pro-Life for that matter.

The greater point that I did want to get to, however, is that it will take at least two or more generations to free the stranglehold the Dims have on my (Black) people. I'll give you an example. In a phone conversation with my mother who'll turn 63 later this month, is concerned about Social Security, worried that President Bush would "spend it all". She is a part of a growing group of voters in the country-the Seasoned Citizens (Rush Limbaugh's term for the Elderly), notably those nearing retirement age and are poor, who are more concerned with what "They (the Government)Owe Me". As another poster noted in this forum, Blacks have been voting Democrat in lockstep since the 1940's, when FDR was president, although IMHO, he did next to nothing to spare Blacks from lynchings, red-lining, cross-burnings, or any of the other problems many in my parents' generation had to deal with. But then, who was it that said, "If you tell a lie loud enough and long enough, it will become truth"? It has worked wonders for the Democratic Party. Even if someone were to write a book exposing the origins of the Democratic Party (Slavery, segregation, class warfare-you name it) and it sold well over a million or so copies, many Blacks would STILL not be convinced; they'd only rationalize, as one caller did on a talk show some years ago about Sen. Robert "KKK" Bryd, that that was all in the past. In other words, I'll bet the farm-if I had one-if Byrd were to come out on the Senate floor in full Klan dress, they'd probably swear it was Sen. Frist, or any other Republican. Heck, the man just played a slave-owning Conferderate General in a movie, and not a single ripple from JET or EBONY magazine!

Although it's an uphill battle, it's not a losing one; good things come to those who wait-and little by little, the Republican Party-MY party-will garner the Black vote.

-Regards, T.

"Ironically, I think you'd find more moderate to liberal whites crossing over to vote for a conservative black than blacks themselves. He or she would be "Tom-ed" to death by his or her own tribe."

The funny thing about politics is that everything is relative. Some politicians are simply immune to some tactics, for instance, no one is going to "Uncle Tom" someone like boxing promoter Don King.

I was by no means suggesting that all Republicans were Christian. The point I was making is that I couldn't understand how someone could be a Christian and a democRAT the way they support abortion and immorality and attack God and all things Christian. The term "Christian democRAT" just seems like an oxymoron to me.

Good post. I appreciate your thoughts. I still don't understand though why so many black folks are so unwilling to hear the truth or are so unable to recognize it when they do. It just makes no sense to me. The fact that the RATS in Washington will give someone like Byrd a pass, no matter how outrageous his words or actions are, while using a nonissue such as Lott's comment to try and crucify an entire party and to try and gain leverage to control the party from the sidelines is beyond hypocrisy. I am thinking they have really been overplaying their hand when it comes to race and others will be responding in much the same way I have been of late. That is to say, in a discussion if someone tries to turn a discussion on values or laws or fairness or whatever else into one of race, I basically take the attitude that "I don't really care what you think." As far as I'm concerned, racebaiting is as ugly as racism and has no place in honest dialogue.

I like your tag line btw.

"the man just played a slave-owning Conferderate General in a movie, and not a single ripple from JET or EBONY magazine!"

The irony and the outrage is that is how things SHOULD be. Playing a racist in a movie should NOT get one labeled as a racist in real life.

But the rub here is that you and I both know that if Trent Lott (or any Republican) had played that same movie role that our completely biased press and TV media would have skewered him, lynched him, condemned him, and hung him out to dry so that they could then repeat all of the above.

It's that double-standard that is such a killer. Technically, we shouldn't care that no one criticized Byrd for a role in a movie. Heck, we should probably applaud the press for not making an issue where there shouldn't be one.

It's just that we know that the media only does the right thing in that case due to the Party affiliation of the actor, and that the press would turn on a dime if a Republican Senator did the self-same thing.

With a Democrat, the press just sees an actor in a movie role. With a Republican, the press would see "hidden motives" and deep, "subconcious racism"...

That's up to God. I'm simply the best servant for God that I can be. If he calls me to lead, then I will lead. If he simply calls, I will listen and answer the call.

I'm in no way disregarding a call from on high to lead. However, if I am a leader of anyone, I feel sorry for my followers outside of my family. I say that because I don't know what I'm gonna do half the time.

Spontaneity is not the hallmark of a good leader. But at least I'm honest!
