January 7, 2003 -- PRESIDENT Bush's decision to hold the 2004 Republican convention in New York puts Hillary Rodham Clinton's party on the defensive and means he'll really try to win the state - which would make it impossible for any Democrat to beat him.

Deborah Orin is once again deluding herself. 1. Upstate (Repulican stronghold) has lost population 2. Suburbs are increasingly Democratic around NYC 3. The "Reagan Democrats" in places like Buffalo and Queens are now dead and 4. Democratic registration in New York has increased considerably since the 1980s.

Nevertheless, I look forward to the convention.

I agree. Its a masterstroke. The backdrop of 9-11 couldn't be more perfect for President Bush and the GOP. What the Dems are reduced to is celebrating Ted Kennedy liberalism in Boston, Massachusetts. The Dems could have gone to Texas and challenged Bush in his own backyard but they decided to write off the South. Dumb move. In contrast Dubya is saying very clearly to the opposition, I'm making a move for The Big Apple. And if it pays off, Bush won't have to worry about California.

How easily do we forget the "I can hear you, the whole world can hear you, and soon the people who brought down these towers are going to hear from ALL OF US!!!" impromptu speech President W gave on top of the rubble heap with a megaphone.

It was at that EXACT moment, my friend, that GW WON the State of NY in the 2004 election.

All he has to do is to play that clip as his NYC TV commercial.

Dems are DOA in 2004 as re: the Presidency - the only question is, will they continue what they started last November, and hemmorhage further losses on the state and Federal levels (let us hope so).

GWB is the REAL DEAL and no one knows it better that New Yorkers.

He has NYC won, ergo, he has the state sown up and he is RUBBING THE DEMS NOSES IS IT.

I now know, after 41 years of frustration, what it must have been like to be alive when Teddy Roosevelt was president. This is the closest we'll ever again get to his kind.

1. Their mayor, Bloomberg, is GOP, albeit a disappointment compared to Guilianni. The DNC logo behind his opponent seemed to help Bloomberg.

2. New York is Hannity's base, the fastest growing radio show in the US.

3. Their governor, Pataki, is GOP.

4. Perpetual bad news about Clinton revelations will continue to undermine NY's DNC.

5. 9-11 hit NY the hardest. Not only is it appropriate to hold a convention there, it is also a good symbolic place to emphasize the importance of defense.

Downside: illegal immigration will continue to pour ignorant and vulnerable voters into New York.

What is most pathetic about those firefighters and rescue workers cheering for Bush is that most of them will vote for the Democratic candidate in 2004 anyway.

You have to understand the mentality of many New York voters.

Bush's chances of winning New York are slim at best. The only time Republican presidential candidates win New York is when they are matched up against dopey opponents like Jimmy Carter, Walter Modale, or Mike Dukakis.

Granted, that still might happen in 2004. But in that case the election wouldn't even be close enough to make New York relevant anyway.

IMHO, to write off New York you have to overlook the impact of 9/11.

In this new world, I think New Yorkers will see Bush's decision as another bold and fearless move--something New Yorkers tend to respect.

Besides, can you name a state in the union that craves attention more than New York? (I can say that, it's my home state.) It can't hurt that the attention will be coming from Bush and the GOP ;^)

I wish I could find the red and blue map of Clinton/Lazio election results to post here. Hillary won so few counties, it is amazing she won the election. That tells me she knew where to concentrate her vote fraud efforts. I'm convinced she stole her Senate seat.

Against an inexperienced and very weak candidate. IMHO the beast will have to try and be on the national ticket in 2004 because she will be out of the Senate (courtesy of either Mr. Guiliani or Mr. Pataki) by 2008.

Dennis Miller was on a local radio station this past summer and one of the hosts asked him what he thought of Hillary Clinton. He said "After 9/11 Rudy Guiliani was going to up to a dozen funerals every day. Hillary Clinton didn't go to a single one. That tells you everything you need to know about Hillary". New Yorkers may be liberal but they are not likely to forget who stood with them when they were down.

By selecting New York for the convention, Bush has guaranteed himself at least a chance to take one of the states the democrats cannot possibly win without.
