Got it off the Dallas News website searched under "retail." There were other jobs too. I'd rather make 30K selling donuts than sit around collecting charity from Congress. Go get em.

But those jobs are so 'beneath' them. I'm waiting for the CEO position of a major corporation to open up. Until then, gimmee the money I deserve. (grin)

Isn't that like, the 58th Amendment or something? "The rights of those without a means (or a willingness to) of support to recieve monies from the government shall not be infringed upon."

What kind of work do you do, and what is your salary?

So what's the skinny on unemployment insurance? What is it that we and our employers pay for? (I dunno, I'm axing!) What happens to the moolah? It's easy to diss the unemployed while staying silent on the everlasting scandals of food stamps, federal housing, sugar and steel subsidies and all the other subsidies for the veggies and crops you didn't know ever existed and you'll never learn how to pronounce. Outta site, outta mind!

I've never heard of employee-paid-for unemployment insurance... only employer-paid-for unemployment insurance. Are you paying into an employee funded unemployment insurance plan?

It's not that way brother ... I was out for 9 months. Employers at Burger King type jobs won't hire laid off high tech workers.

------------------------

Of ciurse not. Basically you become a pariah to everyone.

But, Bush just said the economy was strong. What's the matter, you don't believe him?

-------------------------

Bush has a feather up his behind. He has lived a life so separate from the realities of this nation that I doubt he could find the United States on a map unless polls or Donld Rumsfeld told him it was important to do so..

The Dallas Morning News used to have six to eight pages of help wanted ads. Now it is a quarter of a page. The Amarillo Globe-News used to have three or four pages of help wanted ads. Now it is two columns. Help wanted ads are, nationwide, at their lowest level in thirty years. Over to you.

---------------------------

Please don't interject reality into this.

Krispy Kreme is hiring. Krispy Kreme DOUGHNUTS – Retail Managers – 24k-32k w/bonus

----------------------

Right. I looked up the qualifications. They read: "Applicant must be an unemployed engineer or unemployed master's degree in computer operations with ten years experience in those areas who Krispy Kreme understands will return to those fields should the economy recover. We have three such openings for 700,000 applicants."

Pal, you are nuts. You can regard that as one of the personal attacks people such as you complain about when they say something crazy as hell.

I think that these times are a tremendous opportunity for people to learn those good old fashioned values. You learn them by going through hard times, by learning to do with less, by learning that prosperity is not a certainty. You learn resourcefulness, humility, kindness, frugality. All great, once common American virtues.

We are arguing on the same side of the fence, but unfortunately, I don't think we have the right dynamics in place to pull through a hardship like the Depression.

The difference is the sense of community that was so prevelant back then. Families lived within walking distance of each other, labor was concentrated in urban centers and we were a manufacturing country rather than a service country. I don't have any data to support my opinion, but can you imagine someone in the 1930's commuting from, say, Hagerstown, MD to Washington DC for their job? (I bring that particular example up because I know quite a few folks who do).

Although it might be a powerful wake up for the country, a new "depression" may start an unrecoverable spiral.

I was laid off back in March of last year from an aerospace company that I had worked for 14 years. It was difficult for me at first but it turned into a blessing in disguise. I found a better paying job with better benefits and much nicer people. I was only out of work for two weeks. I had seen the writing on the wall and I busted my ass looking for a job. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Of course good luck is when hard work meets opportunity.

While I can understand your point, it isn't like live on UI is all roses. My benefits, the highest in the nation I believe, are 1/4 of what my salary was when I was working. I've sent out hundreds of resumes and haven't had a nibble, and the same is true of most high tech people here in Seattle. Part of the problem is that companies laid off their HR people and there's no one running the ship when they want to hire.

How many H1B's are still working in the US right now, does anyone know?

I wonder how long it would take you to find a new job if you were laid off tomorrow. I think that unless you have plenty of connections with available positions, you would find it very difficult.

My husband was out of work for almost 10 months. Not that he did not look, no one would hire him. Not even for a department store job. Over qualified. Finally he did get a job as a gas station cashier, but the girl was reluctant to hire him for the same reasons. Shortly after he got that job about one month later he got his present position. When he gave notice she said she understood and that was why she had reservations about hiring him.

It is always so easy to knock others when you are not in the same position.

Pal, you are nuts. You can regard that as one of the personal attacks people such as you complain about when they say something crazy as hell. the poster lacks any real argument.

You can join the chorus of whiners who believe it is impossible to get a job. That's your choice. None of the "obstacles" you mention are insurmountable. If a person wants a job, they can get one. My father went through hard times in the 70's and sold shoes. The man who hired him was well aware that he had a physicist on his staff, and was happy to have him.

It's a question of sales. If I were an experience engineer trying to get the Krispy Kreme job, I would find every way possible to sell whatever similarities I could find. Had I managed people? Did I have any direct reports? Maybe I managed projects. If so, perhaps I had to control costs and budgets. I would sell myself to the hiring manager. If it didn't work, then I move on. But to sit back and say it can't be done? That's the loser's way.

Isn't it amazing how many freepers act this way? No wonder the conservative agenda stalls.

13 weeks?? What are you, a chiseler? What about 3 years? Hell, just pay people not to work. That's real compassion.

I build training programs for hotel systems. I do OK financially. 30K would be a significant pay cut, but it would be temporary. If I were in Dallas, I'd be all over that Krispy Kreme job. Good company. Who knows? Could open up a whole new career: Regional Manager? Maybe a job in the head office if you really excel.

Q: If we give people the extra 13 weeks, what will they do when the 13 weeks runs out? A: Ask for another 13 weeks, of course.

Simple logic here folks. And extra 13 weeks is just a band-aid that will pay nothing in the end.

If you give folks 26 weeks of "buffer" against financial responsibility, how much money will they set aside on their own to get them through rough patches?
