90% of those have enjoyed most of that time off "looking" for work like I "look" for a root canal.

It's not that way brother ... I was out for 9 months. Employers at Burger King type jobs won't hire laid off high tech workers. They know they will be gone as soon as the jobs return. I know ... cause Lord knows I tried. I would have swept floor if I could get a job. BTW I AM working again

Mrs. Carmichael is now considering returning to work, possibly at night, so she and her husband can alternate caring for their children.

Heaven forbid you actually had to work, Ms. Carmichael. I guess the Mrs. thinks the rest of us should be compelled to pay for and her kids while she sits on her arse?

"It's really an act of discrimination," she said, expressing anger at Congress. "They give themselves a raise before they leave and they leave all of us Americans high and dry.

At least they're being paid to work, Mrs. C. Where do people get the idea that its the government's job to feed, house and clothe them, while at the same time providing free medical services?

And I bet that you are steadfastly insisting on considering only jobs that pay you your former salary... Nothing for less, not even temporarily.

Mega Dittos. Its amazing how people feel their entitled to work in a certain profession, and are inflexible to changing careers or taking a job that pays less. But its damn okay for them to make others pay so they can sit home, send resumes in the mail or email, and satisfy themselves they've lived up to their end of the bargain.

The Dallas Morning News used to have six to eight pages of help wanted ads.  Now it is a quarter of  a page.  The Amarillo Globe-News used to have three or four pages of help wanted ads.  Now it is two columns.  Help wanted ads are, nationwide, at their lowest level in thirty years.  Over to you.

The Wal-Mart in Millington, TN is going to be reducing hours for it's employees after the first of the year. Which means they sure won't be hiring.

Ditto for the Memphis Commie Appeaser. Trucking, security guards and house cleaning maids is what domineers the CA employment section on Sunday. There were 2 electronic tech jobs last week both out of hubby's area of expertise though. One wanted you to work on mechnical equipment along with the electronics, the other was for experimental car stuff. His area is 2 way radios.

"Counted on"? I love it when the Democrats and Unions parade around guys like this.... because as soon as they open their mouths, the picture of what we're dealing with becomes much clearer.

BTW, I can't imagine ever having so little pride (or such a high embarrassment threshold) that I would allow a union or political party to hold me up as a posterchild of why unemployment benefits should be extended beyond 6 months.

Looking back on your post, I don't see the connection to the extension of benefits to the "jobless." Your post, to my eyes, was a litany of excuses for why modern Americans should be shielded from any discomfort associated with their financial situation.

According to you, if they spent more than they should have, it's because of the "culture", or Madison Ave. made them do it, or they just never learned to be like the "Greatest" generation, and so what we have is a crisis, and these people simply must maintain their vaunted standard of living.

That's how it came across to me. I think that these times are a tremendous opportunity for people to learn those good old fashioned values. You learn them by going through hard times, by learning to do with less, by learning that prosperity is not a certainty. You learn resourcefulness, humility, kindness, frugality. All great, once common American virtues.

If we bail folks out every time there is a hint of pain, then they will all behave like Darryl Strawberry, repeating the same offenses again and again. So, no, I don't agree with extending benefits. I think it's a bad idea. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
