DEDHAM - A local man police described as a gun fanatic was arrested Tuesday after police confiscated 24 firearms and more than 15,000 rounds of ammunition and gunpowder from his home.
Police arrested William Doherty, 54, of 42 Woodleigh Road at 9:30 a.m., after an investigation led by Officer Bobby Walsh uncovered Doherty was in possession of the guns without a license.
Doherty was released pending charges later that day and police are consulting with the District Attorney's office to ensure proper charges are filed.
Armed with a search warrant, police found an assortment of revolvers, pistols, rifles and shotguns along with gunpowder and the ammunition.
Police said Doherty was not properly licensed to possess the guns and said additional charges may be brought against him. In addition to police, members of the ATF, bomb squad and Fire Department arrived at Doherty's home.
"If he had a Class A license to carry he would have been within his legal right to have those guns," said Walsh, who questioned why someone would need such a large amount of ammunition.
"His possession of all the powder is considered a misdemeanor," he said. "They're still his guns if he wants them once he gets licensed."
Walsh said Doherty by law could authorize the guns to be turned over to a licensed firearms dealer for storage until that time.
Police said it also appeared Doherty was running an illegal tattoo parlor from his home and admitted to having responded to several calls for service to his home in the past.
Other department members who participated in the investigation include Lt. Mike Weir, Detectives Dan Panciocco, Bob Dietenhofer, Ken Jones, Martin Fitzhenry, and Officer Frank McMillan.

Reading articles like this get me very angry. The 2nd Amendment is being slowly destroyed in our country one gun control law at a time. We need to get our friends and relatives active and offensive about our right to bear arms before they are completely gone.
Also, what's this license BS?
What, you have to have a license to have a gun in your house now?
Did you notice that part? There doesn't seem to be any doubt he can get his property back. I guess the only thing he lacks is a piece of paper. The papers are just the first step, or course.
The "Slippery slope" is a perfect model for every right we have lost thus far..
When "No" means "Maybe" we lose every time.
"Your papers please.."
Funny story. Last weekend at 10:39 PM, I heard 3 low caliber gunshots. It's just something you don't hear in the neighborhood I live in. My wife thought they were firecrackers. I ran downstairs and got my shotgun out. Seeing nothing unusual, I put the gun up and my wife called the cops. The officer I was talking to asked where I heard the shots. I explained that I heard them from the back of my house while I was getting my shotgun. My wife cringed when I said that. After hanging up, my wife said she'd wished I hadn't told the officer about my unlicensed shotgun. I had an extremely good laugh.
You are correct sir.
A science teacher once said that if you drop a frog into boiling watter, it will jump right out.
But if you put him in cold water and slowly raise the temperature, he'll sit in there until he boils to death.
No this is not a recipe for frog fricasee...It is a recipe for disaster.
Hellfire! It's only been 6 weeks since the election!
Besides, the Legislature up here is ALL DemonRat. They're not going to change squat just because ol' Mitt is a Repulican.
Well that wasn't really in America you know, but rather the People's Republic of Taxachusetts.
Hell. That's not even a decent weekend's worth in Texas...
